The one thing I worry about with the crate rest is muscle atrophy. We do message and some movement with his legs when we take him out to potty. He is in the crate long hours before I get home to let him out. I will not let my son let him out while we are at work, He does change pee pads though. I also do toe pinches to remind him he still has his legs (he does respond to it.) while he is out to pee and before we put him back in the crate. My acupuncturist suggested water therapy in the bath tub. I don't think he is ready but maybe he is? Not sure. His pain is now under control and he has been gaining bladder control back. Should we wait longer for that?

Water therapy should start after the 8 weeks of crate rest is over Muscles come back - I wish that you all could see Stevie, she is building muscle back really fast she had 2 IVDD epsiodes this year, and spent 16 weeks total in crate rest, and lost alot of muscle mass (you can well imagine)

Just got back from our 3rd accupuncture appointment. The Dr. said she is amazed with what we are doing with Tucker's recovery and she can't wait for him to walk! She said he makes progress in little bits every time we see her. The first time she saw him she really was skeptical about him walking again. Now she can see that he is starting to try and use his legs. We are no longer expressing to pee either. He goes all on his own I give it a couple more weeks and he will be standing again if not sooner! Tomorrow will complete 3 weeks strict crate rest. 5 weeks to go. You can do it Tuckie!!!

Glad to hear Tucker is doing well. I am so glad acupuncture is helping. Tell Tucker that i will be sending him healing energy but it is his choice how he uses it.

Tucker just stood up on his own in his crate!!! It was brief but he did it twice!!! He was crying really bad because he wanted his transport crate and when I picked it up to move it out of sight he stood up!!! Very wobbly but he did it. When I said screw it if you want to be in there Fiume and he stood again as I was bringing it over to his recovery crate! OMG we are so excited!!!

We are excited too to hear all this good news!! Tucker seems to be a roll here…he is following classic text book self repair of nerves. Nerves heal typically in the reverse order of the damage to the spinal cord: 1. Deep Pain Sensation (Only correctly identified by a specialist.) 2. Tail wagging with joy at seeing you or getting a treat or meal. 3. Bladder and bowel control verified with the "sniff and pee" test. 4. Leg Movement, and then ability to move up into a standing position, and then wobbly walking. 5. Being able to walk with more steadiness and properly place the feet. 6. Ability to walk unassisted and perhaps even run. You will play an instrumental roll in the rest of his recovery…that is the healing of his disc by maintaining 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 only out at potty times for the rest of 8 weeks til graduation on August 9. Have you obtained our free brochures to hand out to your vet so she can help another client understand why strict crate rest is so important…we have to give these dogs a chance to heal. Ask Linda for our free brochures and 2x3 cards: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/litorder.htm

Thanks Stevieluv. Tucker is doing great . Our Accupuncture vet said he had gained 100% of his waggy tail back. He is still standing wobbly in the crate. She also said to keep up his leg excersizes. When he is out to potty he is to focused on his nose in the circle we stay in than his legs. She said its awesome the progress he is making. She got to feel him moving his legs a bit at our last visit yesterday. We go again tomorrow. Next week will be our last biweekly visit and we go once a week. I can just see it in his face he wants so bad to run around the house like he used to. In one room and out and into the next around the coffee table it's so funny. He will be able again someday soon!

I noticed Tucker starting to use his legs today when we went out to potty after work today!! It's very little and he is still knuckling over but those little weenie legs are starting to move to walk!! Even at the accupuncture Dr tonight he was moving them to walk. She wanted to see how he was doing with his standing so I brought my sling this time. She was very impressed. Then back in the travel crate and on to the table for his accupuncture/ laser and B12. She also did reiki on him today to get rid of any bad energy he might be holding in. She also checked out Dodgerslist!! She said she was very impressed with the wealth of knowlage here. It was all wonderful and very informative she said of what she could read because she isn't a member Tucker seems to be more restless in his crate as he is feeling better and has a little more motion back. I should have asked her if she had any rescue remedy to calm him a bit. I am loving all this wonderful progress I'm seeing!!

I had Tucker out next to his crate for a minute to change his wet bedding today. Not because of potty issues . We are over that. He thinks he needs to bury his water in his crate for some reason. I usually have someone home to keep him in one place but everyone is away but me. While changing his bedding today, as much as I hurried to change the bedding he took 2 wobbly steps to me as I was changing his bedding. To me it is a big step in recovery even though I know he shouldn't have done it. I am so happy he is getting better!!! I even make sure he can still be his borrowing self in his recovery crate, Today we start week 4

Jen, great news he has the ability to take steps!!! If you attached his water and food bowls at head height in his crate would he still be able to bury them?

I raised it to the next bar. Lets see what he does now. Wouldn't surprise if he still puts his bedding in there
