★1 gretta is 5 years old and weighs 19 pounds. She was 2 when she rescued us and has had a mild IVDD episode before successfully treated with crate rest.
On 7/6 in the office she received: - .88mL injection of Buprenorphine with .04ml at 10mg/mL Acepromazine - Dexamethazone IV
Then at home: Dexamethasone injections - 2ml 7/6 6pm - 2ml 7/7 12am - 1ml 7/7 6am - 1ml 7/7 12pm - .5ml 7/7 6pm - .5ml 7/8 6am (last dose)
Prednisone (5mg tablet) starting July 8 6pm - 5mg 2x a day for 3 days - 1x a day for 3 days - 1 every other day for 3 doses (6 days)
Valium 2mg (b/c of methocarbomol shortage) 2x/day Pepcid 10 mg 1x/day Lactulose solution 2ml 3x/day for 3 days, 2x/day for 3 days, 1x a day for 3 days
[Moderator's note: please do not modify 19 lbs Dex IV on 7/6 Dexamethasone injections at home as of 7/6: for 6 days unknown mgs; 0.5ml 7/8 6am (last dose) Prednisone as of 7/8: 5mgs 2x/day for 3 days then 7/11 taper to test for pain/neuro loss Valium (dizepam) for muscle spasm pain: 2mgs 2x/day Pepcid AC 10mgs 1x/day Lactulose solution (laxative)]
★2 Dachshund gretta, mom (me) is Alix, dad is Michael (mwm). ★3 Yes, family vet (who consulted with neuro over phone). ★4 (Obvious) symptoms began July 6 at 3am and we got her in to the vet at 11am. ★5 I think the pain is not 100% controlled. She's not shivering or whimpering, but she seems sad, her ears are sometimes pinned, and she occasionally holds her head up a bit more than is normal.
She also tries to drag herself back into the crate whenever I have her out for changing bedding and she's not directly in someone's arms. I've been thinking of putting her in a padded basket during this time to stop this?
(I have tramadol on hand for myself if anyone thinks it's a good idea to give her some.) ★6 Eating and drinking are generally good. Today it's been a little less enthusiastic about the eating. July 5 no poop, July 6 normal poop once (at vet), then diarrhea twice, July 7 & 8 no poop - we started Lactulose [laxative???] this morning.
★7 Her back legs and tail are immobile. ★8 I don't believe she has any bladder control. She seemed to on July 6 - she didn't go until we took her out, but since it has been leaks and manual expression. I've been cleaning her with green tea and wet wipes.

Alix, welcome to Dodgerslist! So glad you’ve joined us all. We’ve got valuable information we’ve gleaned from the vets Dodgerslist consults with and our own experiences with IVDD since 2002 to share with you! Please don't use a basket, very dangerous as it can tip and she can easily get out of it.. Better to use a pack n play or an ex pen.. Disc disease is not a death sentence! Struggling with quality of life questions? Re-think things: www.dodgerslist.com/index/more.htmGretta is in pain because she isn't on pain medication.. Valium is for anxiety and also a muscle relaxant. The pain medications commonly used for IVDD are Tramadol and Gabapentin.. Steroids are not pain relievers, they help by getting the inflammation down and when the inflammation is gone, so is the pain but that can take from 7-30 days and in the meantime pain meds are much needed. It's your Vet's responsibility to prescribe medications so call to have them adjust the medications. please do not self prescribe. Call the Vet's number and see if they have someone on call weekends that can phone in a prescription to your pharmacy. Not eating and diarrhea are red flag signs of GI tract and stomach damage from the Dex and Prednisone. Glad you have Pepcid AC on board, should be 5mg 2x a day to give full coverage. It only lasts 12 hours per dose..Also an RX of Sucralfate to gel coat the damage already done.. Discuss with the Vet. Plain canned Pumpkin is a magical fruit - its high fiber can firm up stools and help with diarrhea or loosen the stool to help with constipation. The amount of water in the diet makes all the difference. To loosen the stool, add equal parts water to each kibble meal along with a teaspoon of plain canned pureed pumpkin 1x a day. To firm up the stool add 1 teaspoon pumpkin to kibble and no extra water 1x a day. Note alternatives: really ripe mashed fresh pear, just take off the peel off; microwaved and mashed peeled sweet potato.. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much, Pauliana!
I just called the vet's office and asked for Tramadol and Gabapentin and will discuss the Sucralfate with him when I hear back. I know our vet checks messages frequently even on the one day he's closed, so he should get the message soon. I'll split the next Pepcid and grab some pumpkin. (We just thought she pooped, but it was just gas.)
I was so afraid of progressive myelomalacia I've been in full-panic mode. Your site has helped so much.

Hi Alix, You didn't mention any signs of Myelomalacia.. I will post them here not to scare you but to let you know that Gretta likely doesn't have it. Once she is on pain medications she should feel more like herself as she heals. More info on IVDD: dodgerslist.com/healingindex.htmMyelomalacia can be easily confirmed by your DVM with the following: * about 3-4 days into recovery, they become painful. Within the first week, they are in a LOT of pain. * development of excruciating pain (more than just pain from the original disc herniation) • even the strongest pain meds do not help • once the symptoms begin continued death of the spinal cord happens fast.. in a matter of hours, requiring prompt ER vet help and prevent suffering that will only end badly in death. • hyper-esthesia (over-reaction to any touch sensation on body) * acute disc extrusion with no deep pain sensation * loss of anal tone, the anus hangs open, (anal flaccidity) and areflexia (below normal or no reflexes) * loss of cutaneous trunci reflex at a level more cranial to a previous evaluation over a period of hours to days with or w/o surgery * development of fever (normal rectal temperature is 100.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit) * sudden twitching or jerking of the neck and/or head * loss of voice, hoarse bark * can't hold body up, can't hold head up * increased respiration/ labored breathing as the nerves to the lungs begin to shutdown

Alix can you help us to understand what appears to be conflicting meds in the med list below 19 lbs Dex IV on 7/6 Dexamethasone injections at home as of 7/6: for 6 days unknown mgs; 0.5ml 7/8 6am (last dose) Prednisone as of 7/8: 5mgs 2x/day for 3 days then 7/11 taper to test for pain/neuro loss Valium (dizepam) for muscle spasm pain: 2mgs 2x/day Pepcid AC 10mgs 1x/day Lactulose solution (laxative) as of 7/6 for 9 days Did the neuro indicate the need for 6 days of combo of Dex IV, Dex injections at home? The laxative Lactulose which will loosen stools was prescribed for 9 days starting on 7/6 but never started until morning of 7/8. You r eported diarrhea (runny stools) on 7/7 and 7/8 Dex has big time notoriety in the medical community for the damage it very often will do to the GI tract. Pred is not as strong but it also can cause GI tract issues. So runny stools runs up a red flag to us that Dex/pred maybe the cause as the laxatiive did not start til 7/8 morning. A very good idea to assume the steroid was the cause and advocate for a 2nd stomach protector on board: SUCRALFATE. Do read the link so you know how it must be timed with food with Pepcid AC. Is Gretta basically staying drying in between your expressing sessions? IF not you may need to express more often. While on Pred that would be every 2-3 hours because Gretta will be more thirsty and need to have her water bowl accessable in the crate. Also you may need another hands on lesson to be able to find the bladder and feel that it is almost flat, pretty empty, if you are finding leaks in bedding. This video will give you some good tips and help you get more out of the review lesson by watching first. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htm Do you express for poop? www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htm#poopLet us know more about how expressing is going for you. Just the fact of leg paralysis or loss of deep pain sensation alone ARE NOT signs of impending Myelomalacia. Diazepam is for the pain of muscle spasm pain. Let us know the details of tramadol mgs/frequency and of the gabapentin dose and frequency when you can. For full pain relief it would be expected those three meds would be Rx'd for every 8 hours to provide round the clock pain relief that every 12 hour doses likely would not.

I will try! The Dex IV was the Dex given intravenously in the office. From there we went to home injections for 6 doses (~2 days) and now to prednisone. The lactulose and Pepcid Rx were forgotten by the vet while at the initial visit (7/6) - the vet called us that evening to have us pick them up in the AM of 7/7. I started the 10mg Pepcid right away after pick up on on the morning of 7/7, but waited until 7/8 morning to start the lactulose since she had just had diarrhea as I was picking it up on 7/7. There has been no poop since that 7/7 diarrhea at around 8am. The DVM said constipation would probably become a problem without the lactulose, so maybe I shouldn't have waited. :/ We've tried a few methods for expressing poop (the two in the video, plus lubricated q-tip), but nothing yet. I will definitely step up the tinkle expressions! I was keeping her on her old schedule (5-6x a day) and I'm still changing the bedding a lot. We are making sure her water bowl is full every time we're up. She's drinking lots! My biggest problem with expressing is being worried I'm hurting her. She's not making any signs that's the case, but she DOES NOT like the prone expressing, so I am holding her hind legs up (not raised, but as if she were standing - like Barbara & Frankie in the video, but not over the toilet), and it's just worrisome for me. Doing it in the bath is brilliant (the picture on the linked page) - that's how we did things tonight and it went a lot better for clean up and just her being relaxed. I think she felt safer in the bath. It also lets Michael change the bedding while I express without anyone tripping over each other. At the vet visit she did react a little to the deep pain check, but the DVM said he wasn't 100% sure if it was reaction or reflex. She seems to have much more sensation on her back right side than her back left. Tonight she is eating a little less and right after what she ate of dinner she was sticking her tongue out repeatedly as if she were nauseated. I gave her some more Pepcid before bed. I will update in the morning. Thank you - both of you. I spent all of 7/6 crying. Now I am in fighting mode! Hopefully this is more clear.

Alix, since the diarrhea started BEFORE starting the lactulose (laxative), it most likely is a side effect of the Dexamethasone. Eating less and signs of nausea are red flag signs of GI distress, which can worsen rapidly. The lactulose should be stopped due to the diarrhea she had and you need to speak to the vet ASAP this morning to advocate for Sucralfate. Sucralfate works in a different way to bandaid the damaged mucus lining and also promotes a healing environment. Sucralfate will require timing with other meds…so do your homework so you can discuss things with the vet: www.marvistavet.com/html/sucralfate.htmlPepcid AC should be given 5 mg 30 mins before the Prednisone and then every 12 hours thereafter for as long as Gretta is on the Prednisone. Prednisone should also be given with meals to help protect the stomach. I'm not sure when you said you gave it to her before bed whether she also had her meds before bed but give no more than 5 mg 2x/day. Be sure to put a non-slip pad in the bathtub when expressing so Gretta doesn't slip and fall. Expressing can take some practice to learn how to completely empty the bladder. Please let us know how the increasing of the expressing times works for Gretta. You're doing a great job caring for Gretta. Hang in there - it does get easier. We hope to hear this morning that Gretta's pain is completely under control with the new meds and that Sucralfate is on board. Remember to let us know the exact mgs/frequency of each med once prescribed. Healing prayers for Gretta.

She took her pills this morning no problem!
The vet added ✚sucralfate and ✚gabapentin. I’ll update with the doses when I have the bottles in hand.
[Moderator's note: please do not modify 19 lbs dex IV on 7/6 dexamethasone injections at home as of 7/6: for 6 days unknown mgs; 0.5ml 7/8 6am (last dose) prednisone as of 7/8: 5mgs 2x/day for 3 days then 7/11 taper to test for pain/neuro loss Valium (dizepam) for muscle spasm pain: 2mgs 2x/day ✚gabapentin 100mgs 1x/day Pepcid AC 10mgs 1x/day ✚sucralfate 500mgs 3x/day Lactulose solution (laxative)]
He refused tramadol - says it doesn’t work in dogs. He is sticking to the neuro recommended twice a day for valium, but will increase the dose if necessary.
She ate breakfast, though not as enthusiastically as I’d like.
Does anyone also have a cat? Usually Pippa and gretta are buddies, but Pippa is super freaked out right now and I don’t know how to comfort her.
ETA: does the valium/gabapentin timing matter? I've got the am schedule like this so far:
07:00am sucralfate 07:30am Pepcid 08:00am food, prednisone

Alix, nice job in advocating on behalf of Gretta!
Have you stopped the laxative lactulose? Since she had diarrhea she may be "cleaned out" for a few days before food has been processed and ready for pooping. If you notice that sucralfate is making poop too firm, then try the route of using a high fiber food to regulate. Plain pureed canned pumpkin is easy to give, alternatives are really ripe mashed fresh pear, just take off the peel off; microwaved and mashed peeled sweet potatoe. --To loosen the stool, add equal parts water to each kibble meal and soak overnight. At mealtime add one teaspoon of plain canned pureed pumpkin 1x a day. -- To firm up the stool add 1 teaspoon plain canned pureed pumpkin 1x a day to kibble.
Give a teaspoon of pumpkin for every 10 pounds of body weight,
Bananas with bright yellow skins, a very few brown speckles contain electrolytes and other nutrients. Diarrhea tends to deplete these nutrients. By eating bananas, some of those nutrients are restored. Green bananas are hard to digest.
FYI: Signs of steroid or other anti-inflammatory drug damage progresses in this manner: nausea (lip licking), not eating, vomit, loose stools, bleeding ulcers, black or red bloody diarrhea, perforated stomach lining.
You could give valium and gabaentin together. You could give both of these pain meds at the same time as prednisone
The taper of prednisone is to begin on 7/11. With pain meds just now on board, it may be a premature guess that all pain would be gone now in just two more days. With any test-for-pain pred taper to see if another course is needed, always a good idea to have worked out in advance a "PLAN B" should pain re-surface at night or on the weekend when your vet is not open. Could be an emergency RX script you could fill at local 24 hr pharmacy or some extra pills at home til the vet opens again. An ER visit is very expensive, a "Plan B" is free!
Pain= another course of prednisone + all pain meds, protectors back on board. No Pain= go to pred conclusion...just finish out the 8 weeks of crate rest for the disc to heal.
In order for you to have an accurate test for pain, naturally pain masking meds still on board would not yield accurate test results. Vets either back off the pain meds at the start of the prednisone taper or they will just call for a full stop on the pain meds. Let us know what your Plan B is and which your vet wants re: pain meds on the taper to test for pain/neuro loss this Wednesday 7/11.

Okay, the doses are: half of 1g tablet of sucralfate every 8 hours 100mg gabapentin 1x/day I gave her a dose of lactulose this morning 6am, but none since. Her body is responding [?] to attempted bowl expressiontoday, but no actual stool yet. I couldn't find any pumpkin here in nowheresville, but we have a sweet potato to mash and give two teaspoons of with her with dinner. I got the sucralfate slurry down her and she's currently snoozing. This morning she actually was going to leave her crate to bark at the mailman at the door. I've never been so happy to see her want to bite the mailman's ankles! We closed the side gate so no more of that. I'm still struggling with the bladder expression, but I know it takes practice. Sometimes I get it right on right away and sometimes it's like her bladder has disappeared... but she's dripping tinkle on me at the time! 😅

Alix, having lactulose on board is confusing if Pepcid AC and the sucralfate are doing the job of turning around GI tract damage of loose stools. Seems better to wait til you confirm there is actual constipation identified and then take action— use the mashed sweet potato. The diarrhea may have cleaned her system out and may need time to generate new feces. Does that make sense to you? What does "Her body is responding to attempted bowl expression" mean? It is better if you give specific observations so we understand --- Does your stroking have your fingers feeiing the crown (tip) of the feces as it just begins movement down the rectum towards the anus? --- ???? Expressing is a new skill, where your fingers will be learning to feel for the bladder in all its various shapes and hiding places. When the bladder is full, expressing is a piece of cake. Just the act of lifting Gretta could put enough pressure on the bladder to kinda express her and have her leaking on you! So expressing a full bladder doesn't take much more that pressing on either side of the tummy area as the bladder is filling most of the tummy area as pictured green in the graphic below. As the bladder gets smaller and smaller as it empties it may be the size of an apple> a lemon> a small plum. Your fingers will be learning to feel the bladder in all its sizes. The last size is quite flat, meaning the fingers of one hand can almost feel your other hand. Another tricky thing is as the bladder gets smaller it tends to slip out of your hands dropping lower and back more into the thigh/pelvic area. You will need to go find it again by using your fingers to feel around more back into the pelvic area. Picturing the anatomy can help your mind guide your fingers to that hiding spot. Retrieve the smaller bladder with both hands moving it back to where you can best squeeze it.

Sorry for being vague!
Her anus is moving (contracting and releasing) like when she would normally produce feces, but no poop actually comes out. This seems like progress over yesterday when nothing was happening, even with the q-tip.
I am stopping the lactulose - her last dose of that was 6am.
I’ve split the Pepcid down to 5mg portions so I can give that to her twice a day. (30 min after sucralfate, 30 minutes before mealtime/prednisone).
[Moderator's note: please do not modify 19 lbs dex IV on 7/6 dexamethasone injections at home as of 7/6: for 6 days unknown mgs; 0.5ml 7/8 6am (last dose) prednisone as of 7/8: 5mgs 2x/day for 3 days then 7/11 taper to test for pain/neuro loss Valium (dizepam) for muscle spasm pain: 2mgs 2x/day gabapentin 100mgs 1x/day Pepcid AC 5mgs 2x/day sucralfate 500mgs 3x/day Lactulose solution (laxative) STOPPED]

Hi Alix,
I have a cat... The best way to comfort a cat is to pet and talk to her in a soothing tone.. My cat is very affectionate to me and she likes lots of touching and petting.. Some cats don't.. Depends on the cat's personality.. She misses being able to cuddle with Gretta?..Try cuddling with her, she likely misses her cuddle buddy..

Hi, Pauliana. ❤ They don't really snuggle each other, but they do groom each other and play together. Mostly Pippa is showing signs of fear around gretta and the crate. She ducks and runs by. Things are getting a little better over time. Pippa is pretty easily freaked out - we have cleaners in once a month for floors and surfaces and she's always freaked out that day. gretta got sick the day after they were here, so that probably compounded things. We are trying to give her extra love. gretta s eems to be resting comfortably this morning? She still seems down, but that is kinda standard gretta whenever she's not actively doing something awesome (eating, snuggling, digging, etc.). Last night she was still not interested in food... until I wrapped it in lunch meat. So we got some mashed sweet potato (and her normal dinner) in her wrapped in chicken lunch meat. So far this morning she's had her sucralfate and pepcid and in ~15 minutes I'll give her pred, gaba, and valium with her breakfast. Totally selfish, but I miss seeing that tail wag.

Of course you miss that tail wag, Alix, and I do hope you see it again soon! Both cats and dogs can be very sensitive to changes in the household, especially illness. Giving Pippa extra love is just what the doctor ordered! Glad to hear Gretta ate something. The sucralfate should start working soon to heal the damaged areas. Continued healing prayers for Gretta.

Alix, have you tried the method of expressing poop shown on our Main Web site? Q-tips, etc can damage the delicate tissues in the rectum. Here is the link on how to express. It is better, as you can actually feel with your fingers through Gretta's fur and skin what is going on inside the rectum! After you give it a try, let us know how it went. Most of us express into the toilet. We are seated on a low stool with the dog's body kept horizontal across the lap and butt facing toilet. You really do not need anyone to demonstrate how to express for poop the video gives the detail you can easily follow.

Hi, Paula. We've been trying the two methods in the video, I tried the lubricated q-tip out of desperation. She wasn't having anal contractions the first day we tried, then she was, and now she isn't again (we just tried again and she contracted fine even though still no pooping - I’m just lousy at this apparently). Her last stool was the diarrhea the morning of 7/7. She has a couple red spots or her belly, I'm guessing urine scald from overnight. I gave her a thorough bath [?] this morning. I'm so mad at myself. She's eating good - we're getting 1tsp of mashed sweet potato in her twice a day with her normal food ( www.thefarmersdog.com) plus some shredded chicken breast. The gabapentin seems to start wearing off around 5pm so we're going to [?]need to ask for a second dose/day. Waiting to see how the taper goes today. This is her first morning without a dose of anti-inflammatory. We’ve noticed her.... I’m not sure what’s going on - it looks like hiccups? Night before last and again this morning. She’ll be resting peacefully and then, well, it looks like a hiccup... and then another 30 seconds later or so. Happened about 15 times the first time, and then just a few times this morning.

Alix, the prednisone taper is a test to see if there is still pain. So since pain-masking gabpentin is still on board AND you are needing to up it to twice a day...what does that say? You did not report the exact observations where you feel gabapentin is wearing off. What did you observe? Observations of pain signs mean it is not time to be in a taper, but the time to resume the prednisone to back up to the anti-inflammatory dose (5mgs 2x/day) Do let your vet know right away the exact observations that cause you to interpret as pain. Let us know what the vet's take is and what adjustments to meds are made. SIGNS OF PAIN ◻︎ shivering-trembling ◻︎ yelping when picked up or moved ◻︎ slow to move ◻︎ tight tense tummy ◻︎ arched back, ears pinned back ◻︎ restless, can't find a comfortable position ◻︎ slow or reluctant to move much in crate such as shift positions ◻︎ not their normal perky selves Was the bath a sponge or washcloth bath and NOT putting Gretta in danger by wetting her down and rinsing off in the sink/tub/shower? This tip and many other good ones comes from our supply list at the Main Dodgerslist web site. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/cratesupplies.htmUse unscented baby wipes for quick clean up on your doxie. Marjorie's tip: boil and cool decaf green tea to dampen a washcloth. It is mild with acidifying, antibacterial properties to neutralize urine on skin and fur to avoid rashes from urine scald + leaves aclean earthy fragrance. White vinegar in a spray bottle to disinfect and remove the urine ammonia smell from floors, etc. Best is to have two spray bottles, one filled with plain white vinegar the other filled with peroxide. A spritz of each on urine and poop stains disinfects and completely removes the odor... good on linens, floors and other hard surface. Pre test for color fastness on important fabrics. At Costco you can purchase 2 qts hydrogen peroxide for aboutr $2.00 and two gallons of white vinegar for about $3. articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2001/07/21/vinegar.aspx

The bath was after we were expressing this morning - we were already in the tub, so I sprayed her undercarriage with the shower head. All the other clean ups have been wet wipes and green tea on towels.
I've contacted the vet and let him know that I am seeing:
-tight tense tummy -holding head up more often -more depressed/less engaged as the day goes on
on the gabapentin in the morning only.
I also asked to hold off on the taper.
I'll let you know what I hear back.

Here is where we are with gretta and meds:
Tomorrow we are resuming ▲Prednisone 5mg 2x/day for 5 days, then we will do 1x a day for 5 days, then 1 every other day for 10 days.
The vet okayed an increase in ▲gabapentin to 2x/day for 20 days.
He also re-prescribed valium (we ran out yesterday) 2x/day for 20 days.
He is giving us more sulcrafate to get all the way through the prednisone.
I am picking up more Pepcid at the pharmacy when I pick up the prescriptions tomorrow (we have enough for a few days).
[Moderator's note: please do not modify 19 lbs dex IV on 7/6 dexamethasone injections at home as of 7/6: for 6 days unknown mgs; 0.5ml 7/8 6am (last dose) prednisone as of 7/8: 5mgs 2x/day for 3 days then 7/11 taper showed pain as of 713: ▲5 mgs ▲2x/day for 5 days then 7/18 taper to test for pain/neuro loss Valium (diazepam) for muscle spasm pain: 2mgs 2x/day gabapentin 100mgs ▲2x/day Pepcid AC 5mgs 2x/day sucralfate 500mgs 3x/day Lactulose solution (laxative) STOPPED]
She finally pooped for us last night, and then again today!
Question: should I be concerned about diabetes at all with the extended steroids? I know I'm not a doggo, but my diabetes was steroid induced, so I thought I would ask (and forgot to ask the vet!).
Also, is laser still a good idea after crate rest? I don't want to move her more than I have to, but a vet in a nearby town does laser therapy, so the thought is in my head.

Hi, Alix. Long-term use of steroids can possibly lead to diabetes but the amount of time that Gretta has been prescribed steroids is not considered long term. The first course of the anti-inflammatory dosage of steroids was very short. Hopefully this course will get that swelling down so she can get off of all meds. The Prednisone will be tapered in five days, yet the vet has prescribed Valium and Gabapentin for 20 days. One purpose of the taper is to test for pain/swelling and if Valium and Gabapentin are still on board during that taper, it will be difficult for you to determine if there is still pain/swelling and still a need for the original anti-inflammatory dosage of the Prednisone. You'll need to speak to the vet prior to 7/18 about stopping or at least tapering the Valium and Gabapentin when the Prednisone starts to taper so a true test for pain/swelling can be made. Pain = swelling = more time on all meds. More info on pain/swelling here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingsweling.htmIf there is great pain or severe neuro diminishment, acupuncture or laser light therapy can be be started right away as an adjunct to pain meds and to kick start nerve cell energy production. Options: Acupuncture vet who does home visits to avoid back moving during transports. For transport to necessary visits, pad out the recovery suite extra space with a rolled up towel/blanket to prevent body shifts during braking or cornering. Please let us know whether the new course of meds brings Gretta's pain completely under control today. Pain should be completely under control within one hour of giving the meds and there should be no sign of pain from one dosage of meds to the next.

Got it! Thank you. ❤ We will be picking up her new Rx around noon. Right now our med plan for today is: 7:00am Sucralfate 500mg 7:30am Pepcid 5mg 8:00am Food (w/ 1 tsp mashed sweet potato) & Prednisone 5mg 9:00am Gabapentin 100mg 1:00pm Sucralfate 500mg 7:00am Sucralfate 500mg 7:30am Pepcid 5mg 8:00am Food (w/ 1 tsp mashed sweet potato), Prednisone 5mg, & Valium 2mg 9:00am Gabapentin 100mg w/ expressing every 2 hours from 7am until 11pm (~5 minutes before the hour). She is still super wet in the mornings and has some urine scald. She's Very Thirsty and whines to wake us for more water through the night - it's easy enough to get her water and stumble back into the recliner, but we both have balance issues and wouldn't want to pick her up out of her crate and try to express while in that state. Vetericyn Plus should be coming in the mail today.

Alix do you you have her mattress system set up and layered to help wick away moisture? Mattress enclosed in a trash back and taped shut A pee pad on top of the enclosed mattress A 100% synthetic fleece (no cotton!) blanket tucked in all around the mattress to keep the pee pad in place?

For her crate we have (bottom layer up)
crate pad trash bag covered bed (not taped, a single trash bag didn't quite cover it, so there's one coming from each side) washable puppy pad blanket tucked around everything washable puppy pad synthetic fleece
Have I overdone it?
Her water dish holds 10 oz, so there is probably 8 oz of water in there if we're filling it normally, and she's emptying it every 20-30 minutes when awake. Sometimes she seems to wake up suddenly very thirsty and then will empty the entire bowl.
The only OTC Pepcid I found was a generic. Famotidine 10mg is the only active ingredient. I've tried searching the inactive ingredients (carnauba wax, hypromellose, iron oxide red, iron oxide yellow, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polydextrose, polyethylene glycol, pregelatinized starch, talc, titanium dioxide, triacetin) but can't seem to find much info on their possible toxicity. Is there a good site for that?

The pred makes or dogs very thirsty. Gretta needs to have free access to water during the day, but you can give her a last drink a few hours before she goes to bed. That may help keep her drier.
Generic famotidine with no other active ingredient is fine.

My Perry also had an issue with urine scald.
Brew up some decaffeinated green tea and let it cool. Get some unscented baby wipes. Use the wipes moistened with the green tea to clean up Gretta.
Treat the scald with Aquafor baby cream. No zinc. It's toxic to dogs.

Hi, guys.
gretta is starting to get scabs all over her body and her fur is falling out. I'm not sure if this is stress (she was off the valium a full 24 hours)? Allergies (green tea? wet wipes?)? Prednisone side effect? She's not doing it to herself - there are spots on the sides and back of her neck, too, which means it's probably not the laundry soap, either. I'll talk to the vet about it on Monday [7/16], but I thought I would ask you brilliant people.
After having a couple decent poops, she's now had a few bouts of very watery diarrhea - the first last night around 7pm, one overnight, and one this morning around 10am. No stool since then. She's still tinkling fine and seems okay other than bored/tired and maybe a little nausea after drinking most of a bowl of water. I let the vet know about this today, but did not hear back, so I don't expect to hear anything until Monday.

Is Gretta still taking the Pepcid (famotidine) and Sucralfate? Any signs of blood in the diarrhea?
Hair loss and scabs all over her body could be a number of things. Are the spots itchy? One of the side effects of pred is skin infections. Another is overgrowth of demodectic mange mites although this is seen more in dogs that have been on pred for three or four months. The vet would be able to diagnose this with a skin scraping.

Yes to still taking pepcid and sucralfate.
The middle bout of diarrhea looked brown but there was some red in the water when rinsing out the pad. The last bout was brown and more solid/less watery, but there was a tiny bit of brown-pink on the wet wipe when we cleaned her up after expressing her bladder at 5pm tonight. The 7am expression clean up was fine, though.
She doesn't seem to be itchy at all. The scabs started on her neck, so I thought maybe it was where I dripped some of the sucralfate slurry, but now it's all over. It is very like the reaction of a cat I had that was allergic to fleas. I think I've identified all the spots right now and we've stopped the green tea on the wet wipes to see if it gets better. At this point she's drinking so much her tinkle is clear and odorless anyway.
Thanks for all the help. ❤

Just an update:
She has not had any more diarrhea since the morning of 7/15. That one was almost-solid, but did have blood on top (so scary!). She seems fine since then. We are doing boiled chicken and rice for food until we see a normal stool.
She has had two!! spontaneous tail wags now! I'm trying not to let it make me too hopeful.
She is definitely getting some sensation back in her legs - but it's making her fuss with them a lot. I'm worried about this position putting strain on her back? I've been thinking about putting socks on her, but afraid that'd only make her fuss more. The first day she started fussing (late evening 7/14), she licked herself enough that there was a little blood on the rag when we were washing her feet (I put some Vetericyn on them and bandaged them for a little bit), but no signs of injury since.
She has been drinking almost 120 ounces of water a day. This seems like A LOT. It does seem to be slowing down a little bit this afternoon.
We stopped using anything with green tea or aloe on her and her skin seems to be clearing up. I'm going to guess it's an aloe/latex allergy since one of the scabs was on her snoot and the green tea shouldn't have ever touched her there, though I'm sure I ran an aloe-containing wet wipe over it - plus her new "hypoallergenic" shampoo that I used to clean up her diarrhea has aloe as well.
