I'm thinking I may get Perry checked for a UTI.
He was peeing in concentrated areas on his potty pad.
Now it looks like a sprinkler system, little sprays all over.

So he will be tapering to an every other day Pred dose this week?
Let us know what your vet thinks about a urinalysis. Do you find little urine leaks/drips now where he sleeps in his bedding or just finding on this pee pad and not so much the one concentrated pee spot on the pad?

Perry is starting with the every other day taper today. He'll do that for 2 weeks.
Really had to push my vets for this. Prednisone worked great but obviously don't want him on it if he doesn't need it any more.
As far as urination, I've been noticing a lot of sprinkles all over the last two days. Not just when he's sleeping. And not just on potty pad.
He's eating and drinking fine. No signs of pain. Neurological is good.
I confess that since he'd seemed to regain bladder control I haven't been Express checking.
Just wondering if he didn't have complete control and developed a UTI.
I'm taking him to laser therapy Tues and will call ahead and check with vet there.

Hi Julie, Thanks for the update, sorry to hear Perry might have a UTI. Let us know what the Vet says about the results of the Urinalysis. Glad he is doing well otherwise.. I hope the interactive toys you ordered with help distract Perry..

Well Perry's halfway through crate rest. Woohoo! Tapering every other day with Prednisone this week and next then done.
Doing better with urination, maybe he was just unsteady on his feet.
One more laser therapy treatment then he's done with that.
Unfortunately, he's starting to get stir crazy. Barking and jumping in his pack and play.
I've tried interactive toys. Freezing food in a Kong and hard chew sticks. Distracts Him for a bit.
The last day or two I've resorted to Trazadone in the morning and evening.
The natural calmers don't seem to help.
I guess a slightly sedated dog who will rest will have to do for these last couple of weeks.
Perry thinks he's fine and wants to be out and about!!

Julie, you have been doing a remarkable job in caring for your little patient. When they start to feel so much better another challenge kicks in. You are right a slightly drugged, relaxed dog is better than moving about too much. Sounds as though the conclusion of pred by the end of next week will have good news, good proof all spinal cord swelling is gone! This picture represents what Perry may be thinking!

Perry just finished his last laser therapy appointment today and was checked for a UTI. It was negative.
I had it done because he's sprinkling when he pees. Guess his bladder control is still healing.
2 more doses of Prednisone and he's finished tapering.
He's finished 5 weeks of crate rest with 3 to go. Woohoo!
Tail wag is very good and legs are doing really well.
Have been using Trazadone about 1/2 to 1 pill a day to keep Perry calm.
He's convinced he's absolutely fine. LOL!
Am absolutely amazed at how far Perry's come so quickly.

Julie, it is wonderful to read your report. Yes, Perry IS doing very well from where he came from 5 weeks ago. Normally it is not expected that nerve function would repair in that short of time.

Perry feels so good he rolled over for a tummy rub yesterday!
His appetite is back and he's snuggling his favorite stuffed toy, Mr. Cow.
I'm having a special ramp built for my bed. It runs along the length of the bed and has safety runners on the sides.
Am going to block off the sofa with folding fireplace screens and put the coffee table in the shed.
Feels like baby proofing only it's IVDD proofing. LOL.

We made it, tomorrow is graduation day!! Perry is doing very well. Has a good tail wag, can fully use his back legs, and feels great. He still has a little healing to do with bladder/bowel control. Doesn't always quite make it to the puppy pads. But considering that 8 weeks ago he was completely paralyzed in his back legs and was incontinent, I don't mind. Thanks for all of the help and support. I couldn't have done it without you all!! www.dodgerslist.com/forumads/Graduate.jpg

Julie, congratulations on Perry's graduation! You did it, Perry did it through all the challenges you both came up against. We appreciate all the time you spend in helping others to see that conservative treatment really does work and sharing tips you have learned in the process---- Thank you!

Perry went outside for the first time since crate rest. He really enjoyed sniffing everything and even tried to lift his leg to pee!!
It's so wonderful getting back to normal.
I'm doing my Snoopy happy dance!!

Congratulations Julie and Perry!! So happy for you guys!
Julie, would you mind expanding on how you’re introducing Perry back into activity? Hugo graduates tomorrow and I’d like to hesrhow someone else is reintroducing activity. Will Perry stay in his pack and play while you’re not home now that he has graduated?

Perry was jumping up on the side of the pack and play towards the end.
So after crate rest is over I'm not keeping him in it.
However, my place is small and has no stairs and any furniture is blocked off.
At night my bed is blocked off so he can't get off. He just lays down and sleeps.
When we went outside it was just a few minutes and he was on his leash.
Just take it slowly.

Thanks Julie!
I’m graduating Hugo to an xpen tomorrow or Wednesday to stay in through the days while I’m at work for the next two weeks. My place also has no stairs and is quite small. All furniture is also blocked off so nothing to get on.
We’re doing short walks 2-4 minutes at a time outside too.
Great to know that info Julie, thanks! 😊

Hi Julie.
Just wanted to check in and see how Perry is adjusting to life after crate rest? Have you been letting him out of his pack and play while you’re at work? You have another dog, correct? Do they try to play when he’s out roaming?
This last week, I’ve been letting Hugo go in his pen to do some standing and walking and we went for short 3 minute walks on Friday and yesterday.
I’m scared to let him roam. My apartment is very small but he wants to play so badly, he’s wants to run around with my other dachshund Scarlett.

I have been letting Perry stay out. My other dog is 13 and she isn't into playing anymore.
If you're worried about that I'd say keep crating while you're not there to supervise.
I do worry but have safe guarded everything I can.
Perry does try to shake his toys but short of putting them all up there isn't much I can do.
It can be hard to protect them but still let them be a dog.
Hugo sounds like he's doing well. I can tell your being slow and cautious.
At some point we've done all we can. Hang in there.😀

Perry loves the freedom of the new bed ramp. I have it blocked off with a fireplace screen so no jumping is possible. He scampers around like he's absolutely fine. It's amazing! Perry still has only partial bladder/bowel control. He'll usually make it to the door of the room where his potty pads are. Then I'll see a trail. Luckily, it's linoleum!! I'm hoping he continues to heal but am very grateful at how much progress he's made already.😀

I'm going to take Perry for a trim next week.
Since I now know he has IVDD he probably shouldn't have the neck loop anymore?
|
|
|
Post by Romy & Frankie on May 31, 2018 13:29:28 GMT -7
Those restraining loops groomers sometimes use do seem like they could cause issues with an IVDD dog, especially the loop type ones like a noose. Does he typically move around a lot when being groomed?

He's wiggly. Guess I'll just help hold him like I do with Nala.
I use a small independent groomer. I stay and help hold Nala and I bathe and brush at home.
Less stress and less chance of injury.

Sounds like a good plan to stay and hold him Julie, don't want to chance him jumping off the grooming table. I groom Keira myself (used to be a part-time dog groomer) and due to the risk of injury I find it so much harder to groom her, so it's great that you have a really groomer that knows how important it is to be careful. I'm sure Perry will feel great having all that hair off for the start of Summer!
