Forgot to mention that Perry tried a prednisolone taper to 1x daily and tramadol, gabapentin, robaxin, 2x daily, Mon-Wed but he started shivering and panting. So starting today, back to prednisolone 2x daily and all three pain mi 3x daily for another 6 days.
He's looking much more comfortable again.
Just wasn't ready to taper yet.

Post by Julie & Perry on Mar 29, 2018 at 5:00pm Woohoo!!! Think I've cracked the code of how to express Perry. 4x today and less fighting and resistance each time. Giving trazadone and timing pain meds with expressing schedule so plenty is on board at time to potty.
He likes sitting while being expressed.
Found duck jerky he is insane about, give before and after with lots of praise. Hallelujah!!
Yes the med list is correct. Thanks

Am trying not to get discouraged. Still not seeing any tail wag, standing, ECT.
Perry's also starting to get resistant to expressing again.
Wonder if he's developing a tolerance to the trazadone?
On the plus side he's still eating and drinking well and seems comfortable.
I've decided just to do the best I can with expressing and try not to worry so much.

Julie, since nerves can take longer to heal than a disc, you may or may not see anything yet. Have patience with nerve healing. So it is not realistic to even be discouraged at this point in time.
I believe that ACEpromazine maybe/might be the better of the two than trazadone. ACE will relax his muscles so that he won't be fighting you. trazadone relieves anxiety. Give ACE 1 hour before expressing for its full effect.
Discuss with your vet about ACE since you express every 6-8 hours now (?) now that pred is tapering.. ACE I read effectively lasts for 4 hrs, but has a rather long elimination from the body. Or if trazadone needs to be at a higher dose.
Here is a thought, if Perry is now not liking being expressed, perhaps that is a signal that some nerve repair is starting. Can you take him outdoors just for the "sniff and pee" test. When some sensation in the bladder is returning dogs do not like their bladder pressed on...as they can feel it.

Actually, I tried the taper last week on [3/26 & 27] Monday and Tuesday.
Perry started panting and shaking so hes been back on 2x daily prednisolone and 3x daily all pain meds. That's this [exact date?] Wed thru today.
So I'll try another taper starting Mon [MONDAY April 2???.]
[Moderator notes please do not edit 17 lbs Prednisolone as of 3/18: 5mg 2x/day for 8 days then 3/26 taper to test for √ pain/neuro loss as of 3/28: 5mgs 2x/day for 5 days, then 4/2 test taper for pain/neuro loss Gabapentin 100 mg 3x/day Tramadol 75 mg 3x/day Robaxin125mg 3x/day Pepcid AC 5 mg 2x daily Clavamox 125mgs 2x/day til 4/4 for UTI+urine scald Trazadone 25 mg 2x/day to relax @ expressing]
Tried the two leashes taped together and took Perry to his potty pad.
He was scared to try to stand without his back legs and wouldn't do it.
My sister's going to make me one of the sweatshirt supports but she's on vacation until next week.
I've also tried holding him up on a potty pad and saying, go potty. Nothing.
I'll check on the Acepromazine.
Thanks again.

Lots of dogs go through several tapers before all the swelling in the spinal cord is gone. It can take as long as 30 days on the full dose (taper doses don't count) for the swelling to be gone, so try not to be discouraged. Maybe try to get Perry used to the figure 8 sling by putting it on and treating then taking it off after just a few minutes, repeat leaving it on a minute longer a few hours later. This is how I got Frankie used to a Gentle Leader when I first adopted him.
Let us know how the latest taper is going. Healing thoughts for you both.

Has the 6-day course of pred Rx'd on 3/29 been changed to fewer days? Confusing/conflicting info. posted on Sun, April 1: "So I'll try another taper starting Mon [MONDAY April 2???.]
Prednisolone as of 3/17: 5mg 2x/day for 7 days as of 2/23: 5mgs 2x/day for 3 days, then 3/26 test taper for √ pain/neuro loss as of 3/29: 5mgs 2x/day for 6 days, then Wed, 4/4 then taper to test for pain/neuro loss
A old sweatshirt is made of knit fabric. Knits do not ravel, you could fold over the bottom half and use a fabric glue or just make long in and out of fabric basting stitch by hand with needle and thread to hold the folded part in place. Click to expand image below:
Another option than basting is a Fabric glue. Glue can be found a Micheals, local fabric stores, many brands. Some you apply iron heat to fuse, others, just let dry til secure.
Then just cut out leg holes. Use safety pins to secure the handle sleeves together. When your sister gets back if you need, she can use her sewing maching to fine tune what you have done. Sir Lyon's Puff's Sweatshirt sling directions: www.lyonpuffpetsit.com/htmlslp/sling.html

Yes it does get confusing because first was emergency vet then regular vet.
-- First Prednisolone 5mg 2x daily- 3/18 to 3/25 [8 days] with robaxin, tramadol, and gabapentin 3x daily. -- Taper tried from 3/26-3/27 of Prednisolone 1x daily and pain meds 2x daily. Started seeing shaking and shivering and generally not comfortable. -- 3/28 to 4/1 [5 days] Prednisolone 2x daily at 5mg and pain meds 3x daily. -- 4/2- again trying taper of Prednisolone 1x daily and cutting pain meds to ▼2x daily. -- So Perry has been on prednisolone a total of 14 days.
Am done with clavimox as urine scald and UTI are cleared up.

Trazadone 25 mg 2x/day to relax @ expressing]
Am trying not using the trazadone starting today as it wasn't really helping with expressing.

Julie, I couldn't be happier for you and Perry! Such wonderful news. I wouldn't doubt that he has some bladder control, too, and that's why it's been so hard to express him. I'm hoping to hear that he's passed a sniff and pee test soon. Way to go, Perry!

Day three of the second taper and so far so good. Not seeing any signs of pain. Hopefully this time it works.
Post by Julie & Perry on April 3 at 11:45am So far no response to sniff and pee however once I start expressing I can stop pressure and he will continue to pee for a few seconds.
I'm just thrilled at his progress so far. He likes his laser therapy sessions. Just went to his third one.

Perry is doing well on his taper, day 4 and no signs of pain at all!
He's not fighting me about expressing. I'm still trying the sniff and pee. No results yet.
Perry's being such a good boy about his pack and play.
Will keep updating as I see improvements.
Thanks again for your support.

And we have a tail wag when getting a treat! Woohoo!!
Now that Perry's feeling better I'm wondering what to do to keep him from getting bored?
Also, since his rear legs are working again I'm thinking of covering the top of the pack and play when I go out.
I'm a little worried about escape attempts!

Perry is doing great! I think it is a good idea to cover the top of the pack and play if you see him trying to stand up on his back legs and look out. If you drape the blanket down a bit, he wouldn't be able to see anything if he tries to stand on his back legs.
To keep him occupied in the try playing classical music or a wildlife tv show. I think there is even a cable channel called dog tv. Also since dogs sleep about 18 hours a day, he will probably spend a lot of time just sleeping.

Julie, you can have local hardware store, cut you a piece of plexiglass or other material a tad bit larger than the size of pack n play. Ask they drill a few perimeter holes. This way if you want you can secure the topper with string, if you have the belief that Perry could climb up the sides and get out like Nala did with your gait! Also great idea from Romy to drape a blanket down over the side to level of his eyes. The topper would then also keep the blanket from sinking down in the middle where Perry could grab it an pull onto his mattress????
Please keep the updates coming. We'd love to hear about how you handle blanket draping with a pack N play. You are doing a marvelous job with Perry and he is reaping the benefits!

Second week of Prednisone taper 1x daily. No signs of pain at all.
Seeing encouraging signs of bladder control returning.
Perry's tightening his bladder when I express and lifting his right leg.
Also, I've put a potty pad in one corner of his pack and play and he's used it to pee on several times.
I haven't actually seen him sniff and pee but he only wet on the potty pad not any other spots.
Tail wag is still sporadic but it's coming back.
Seems happy and comfortable.
I'll take it.😀

Julie, really does sound like bladder control IS returning when he holds urine til in an appropriate spot--- the pee pad and does not wet anywhere else!!!
Continue to stick to 100% STRICT rest 24/7 for the balance of the 8 weeks, I really believe Perry is going to not only heal his disc but also show an impressive self healing of his nerves in such a short time of 8 weeks. Your tenacious spirit to never give up during those challenging times is paying off! Keep up the good work!!

Perry is continuing to do well. Using his potty pad in his pack and play and wagging his tail for treats.
Several weeks ago his back legs were paralyzed and he didn't have bowel/bladder control. Crate rest and laser therapy have worked miracles!!
Perry is tapering off prednisolone to every other day next week. He isn't on anything else. Woohoo!

Perry's feeling so good that he wants out. Jumping up on sides of the pack and play and barking.
I put a couple portable window screens across the top and covered with a blanket.
That's working for now.
However, I have about another month of crate rest left.
How do I keep him calm and quiet?
Now my problem is he feels fine and is ready to get moving. Not!!

Julie, I am glad Perry is doing well but I do remember how hard it was to keep Tyler calm when he started to feel better.. Have you tried any of the natural calmers? If they don't work for Perry, do you still have some of the Trazadone or Acepromazine? Here's a link to the emergency crate training that has lots of tips for crate/pack n play anxiety.. dodgerslist.com/literature/EmergencyCrate%20Training.htm#EmergencyconfinementUsing any oral calmer in combination with a Pheromone diffuser seems to work best. It takes several days for these to start working - it isn't immediate but they are a much better option if you can avoid heavy duty prescription sedatives such as Acepromazine, Trazodone, etc. Of course always keep your vet in the loop on all things you give your dog. Other product brands may be available in your area or on-line… just shop by the active ingredient(s) on the label and the quantity for best price. Place a DAP pheromone diffuser at floor level where the recovery suite is. Dogs: Adaptil (DAP) wall plug in diffuser 48ml www.adaptil.com/us/Products/ADAPTIL-Calm-Home-Diffuser with dog pheromones Use a diffuser with one oral calmer from below: 1) ANXITANE® S chewable tabs contain 50 mg L-Theanine, an amino acid that acts neurologically to help keep dogs calm, relaxed 2) Composure Soft Chews are colostrum based like calming mother's milk and contain 21 mg of L-Theanine. 3) Bach's "Rescue Remedy Pets" is a liquid 5-herb combo to help with relaxation (Star of Bethlehem – Orithogalum umbellatum, Rock Rose – Helianthemum, Cherry Plum – Prunus cerasifera, Impatiens – Impatiens gladulifera, Clematis – Clematis vitalba)

I went online and ordered a couple interactive toys for Perry.
One is a puzzle where you hide food and they have to lift and move pieces to find it.
Another is a chewy football that holds dog biscuits.
Also ordered him a Kong. Will try putting his kibble in it with a little meat food and freezing it.
Think I'll work on some tricks like shake and nose touch.
I want him to stay calm and will take it a step at a time.
However, he's been getting really rowdy because he feels so good now.
No good deed goes unpunished. LOL.
If this doesn't help I'll see about a sedative or calming chews.
