When I took Penny out for her morning potty, her rear legs were pretty wobbly. Why would this be happening after walking better? Could it be the night's sleep and not using her legs? What can this be attributed to? I think that we're doing everything correctly, so why this?

Penny has arthritis and not moving causes stiffness in the joints. With a disc episode going on the not moving takes precedence in order to protect the spinal cord.
After crate rest is over and she can get back to moving and exercising that hip, perhaps she will be less stiff and be able to walk better.

Well, that makes sense. She is lying down most of the time. Thanks. You keep me from despair.

In the After Crate Rest section, it says:
"Make sure that life long he is not doing high risk activities (jumping on/off sofas/beds, going up/down stairs, on a harness for outdoor activities, etc.) to help prevent another flare up."
He mentions "on a harness for outdoor activities." Does he mean we shouldn't use a harness? We've always used tracking harnesses on our dogs or the Gentle Leader Easy Walker.

I believe it means that they should be on a harness for outdoor activities, rather that a leash and collar or off leash - to better control their behaviour. The high risk behaviour would be outdoor activities without a harness. I had to read it a couple of times to get it right

Using a harness that puts the pulling stress on the bony parts of the chest and shoulder is what takes the stress off of the spine. is what is being recommended. While in contrast collars should be considered as a necklace just to hold the tags, not to attached a leash to. So this is how using a harness when out and about helps to protect the spine. I hope this helps to answer your concerns?

I agree completely with the use of a harness. The inclusion of "harness" within the parentheses in his article was misleading, and it should have been stated as a positive. We've used tracking harnesses since the mid-1980s, when we were doing tracking. We still have those original ones and they're still in good condition. And when the Gentle Leader came out, we used them, as well. There's no risk to their sensitive necks with either of those.
[Editor's note: thank you we have addressed your good comment in that article]

Here's an update on Penny's situation: Ward took Penny for her second acupuncture session on 6/10/13, as I was running late. I saw good improvement in her gait and strength in her legs after that second session. On the 14th, Penny's condition had regressed and her legs were weaker, which was concerning.
She was better the next day but not back to the gains she had made. We both went to her 3rd session on the 17th, as the vet planned to assess her progress. Ward put Penny into the crate in the back of our CRV and I joined them when we were ready to go.
Dr. Hanks noticed that Penny seemed to have lost progress since the week before, confirming my observation. Ward said that he had not noticed that she had done anything different from always. Penny was relaxed and seemed to enjoy this session. The plan was made to have one more session to see how she was, whether she could benefit from more sessions or what.
When we left the clinic and Ward got ready to put Penny into her crate, she jumped up to get in without waiting for Ward, who reacted quickly to get the whole dog into the crate. The effect was, in my mind, akin to throwing her into the crate. (It made me wonder if this had ever happened before.) I was very upset and reminded Ward that he should have been prepared by having a hand on her both of her lift handles so that he could put her into the crate without her getting injured. He said that was the first time that had happened. I was upset beyond words and so scared for Penny.
She was none the worse for the accident and is stronger now than ever. (I have let go of my fantasy of taking Penny and finding someplace better for the two of us to live! Of course that would have had to be in a tent somewhere or on the street, neither of which would have been an improvement over our current situation.) We have our next appointment tomorrow at 6 pm. I will help Ward so that there are no more issues with getting into the crate.
Sorry this is so long. I am going to try to post a couple of photos and a short video after posting this IF I can sign onto this list from my computer, which it has not allowed me to login as yet.

Hi Jude,
I can understand why you were so upset but I am glad Penny is back to improving.. Sometimes men handle things in a far different way than we would.. I would have reacted the same way you did and have on other similar occasions with Neil.. Like the time he let Tyler run down the short back stairs when he should know better. When I pointed out the dangers he yelled at me and said he had surgery and is all better now. <rolling eyes> Yes indeedy at that moment a tent with all the pets, anywhere but here seemed a wonderful idea. Although it wouldn't have a been an improvement for us either..
Here's to Penny being stronger than ever!

I hear you. My husband and I had another "come to Jesus" meeting this morning. I reminded him that while I don't expect him to duplicate my efforts at learning about IVDD, if he's not going to, he is going to have to believe me when I tell him something about how Polly needs to be handled. Believe me and FOLLOW my instructions. Not some of the time. ALL of the time.

You ladies are so funny! I had never heard of a "come to Jesus" meeting, but it's nice to know that there's a name for the discussions that Ward and I have more frequently than I would like. For the most part, men are very nice creatures, but even when they're nice, they're not like us. My career was in the social services field, so I think I understand people quite well, but I just can't get my husband. He doesn't get me, either, so I guess we're even. Sort of...

We ladies have a lot in common for sure! True our men are nice guys but it is true they certainly don't think like we do.. I remember the book that came out years ago called "Men are from Mars and women are from Venus" and I read it way back when. It made sense and explains how differently both genders are "wired". I think I need to re read that book and maybe add an IVDD chapter.. LOL

Penny had her 4th session as a porcupine tonight. I helped her dad put her into the crate in the car and also helped her out of it, both going and coming back home. I think we've got the hang of it now, so it went smoothly. Whew! She walked into the clinic with four strong and sturdy legs and impressed Dr. Hanks. Tonight's session went well, and we need to go back only if she gets herself into trouble again. I was very impressed with how much and how quickly the acupuncture helped her. Her eight weeks are up on Friday and I'll start to take her on short walks in a few days. I believe she's ready for that.
I am so grateful for all the help and encouragement from the people on this site. A while back I subscribed to the Dodger's List newsletters, email for me and snail mailed for my vet. I feel sure that she will be referring people to this site as they begin their own journey back to wellness again.
Peace and love,
Jude
(I'm not leaving the list yet, however, as our journey isn't quite over.)

I've tried very hard to be cautious and consistent with Penny Laine throughout her disc ordeal. She's maintained a very positive outlook and has done very well. She's going for walks around the yard and out back to the greenhouses. Her legs are regaining their previous strength. She still wobbles when she walks, but she has always done that due to her left hip issues with the placement of her femor. She also still knuckles over but frequently corrects herself. Can't ask for more than that.
A few days ago, Ward was away and I had full charge of the three dogs. As I got ready to take Penny out for a walk, she was so excited that she jumped side-to-side in her crate, and I didn't notice that her movements had dumped water from her bowl onto the floor. As soon as I opened her crate door, our other two dogs mobbed Penny and me. Penny stepped out and slipped on the water but was unfazed by this and accompanied her sibs to the back door. Her feet were wet and she slipped again but got right back up. I held her back as the other two charged through the door, hoping for some action to take place outside, as there might be a stray cat or squirrel nearby. I kept Penny right beside me, much to her chagrin. The gods were watching over her this day, as she was fine and had no ill effects from her slipping.
I have written this so that any new or insecure person (like I was) will understand that we all can be and are taken unawares at times and our dogs may suffer mishaps in a flash, regardless of how careful we are. We learn from our experiences and move on, with no need to place blame on ourselves.
Sometimes dogs are a PACK and sometimes a MOB, such as mine were that day. My lesson learned was that I should have foreseen a problem with all three of them going out together and waited to take her out alone. instead.

Hi Jude how is pretty penny doing? I have a soft spot for rotties. My sister adopted one and he was the sweetest boy. He also had hip problems but that didn't slow him down :)anyway i just read your posts and you are not the only one that is learning lessons the hard way. My Fred is doing much better and with that the determination to be an active dog again. Wishing both you and penny well and a great recovery!

Thanks, Stacy. Glad that your boy Fred is coming along well. It's a bit of a journey, isn't it!
Penny's still pretty much holding her own for now. She is going for walks daily and is getting stronger. Her left leg, always a problem, continues to be weaker than her right. I'm thinking that another acupuncture session might help that leg.
At this point, her previous fears are really rearing their ugly heads. She's afraid of my husband when he's standing or walking around. If he's sitting, she's fine as long as she can see him. She likes to lie next to his chair with him in it by the back door, so we've been letting her do that. Ward spends most of his time in that chair, so Penny's snooze time there is quite lengthy. When he gets up, she quickly moves away. I'm quick to react to this and put her back in her crate, as we don't allow her to do any running. She doesn't want to be in there any longer, but it is her safe space when Ward's up and about. She has to know where he is at all times in order to feel safe. It seems like we're still just treading water regarding this issue. Thank you very much, you miserable first owner who abused and neglected her and made this gentle soul so fearful of my gentle husband!
All in all, we're doing as well as can be expected, given her situation. We're thinking positive, which helps.
Jude

Penny continues to do well. She is gaining strength in both rear legs. She feels good and is ready to get back into her old groove. However, Mom won't let her do as she pleases, as it's too soon for that. She minds me really well, and that is our saving grace. She's a clever girl and knows how to open the screen door to the back yard. This afternoon I heard a loud BAM, and she was outside, as Ward had neglected to completely shut the door in spite of my reminders. Fortunately, he had shut the yard gate, so there was no way for her to get loose.
She had her final laser therapy session yesterday and did well. She's regained the weight she lost during her recovery period, and she's looking great. It's so wonderful to have our pretty Penny back with us.
