Hello-
I am hoping that I have entered this new website correctly.
We are still doing great with Mimi. I cross my finger and pray everyday! She continues to wake up wagging her tail in a great mood! Things are on the rise.
How long does something like this take? At what time will I know that I can stop the crate rest?

Katie, glad to see you here. You did great on posting! Graduation day will be upon completing 8 weeks of crate rest on April 17. Crate rest serves the purpose to let the disc heal...there aren't any meds to heal a disc but time and little movement. There's a good overview of what happens during conservative treatment here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingpage.htmCan you bring us up to date on what meds (dose/frequency) she is on now... any tapering down from Dex?

Hello!
So meds now are as follows...we have been tapering down on the dexamethazone.
1/2 pill (not sure on dose) tramadol - morning and night - sometimes just night - depends on the pain and how she's been moving that day 1/2 pill sulcrafate - once a day 1/4 pill (.5mg) dexamethazone - every other day now
It seems to be going well...we are very happy with her progress.

Katie, is there currently pain on the Dex taper? If yes, the vet needs to know.... not all the swelling is gone yet. Pain = swelling
Are you seeing any of these signs of pain now: shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant/slow to move head or body, tight hard tummy, holding leg flamingo style not wanting to bear weight?

Hello-
She doesn't seem to be in pain.
She does not shiver anymore. Every once and a while she will yelp, due to me picking her up and moving her outside to go to the bathroom. Her tummy is no longer tight and not standing or holding her legs weird. She seems to be bearing weight well.

Hi Katie, do you think the yelp is from anticipated pain when picking her up? My Jolene did this for quite awhile. I finally figured it out that she was just thinking it was going to hurt. Sometimes she even did it before we touched her. Sounds to me like you've done really well taking care of her and shes on the road to recovery.
Beautiful picture of a beautiful girl.

Thank you so much! I am thinking that it defintely could be from her anticipating the picking up and possibly having it hurt. She is still doing well...it's so hard to not let her play! She's so much more energetic and wanting to play with her sister -who is also a daschund!
Thanks so much for the feedback.

Hello!
I wanted to write and let you know how Mimi is progressing!
She is doing GREAT! She is no longer on any medication. They slowly took her off the meds and now she's completely off.
She is entergetic and happy as can be. We are still really monitoring her movement and jumping around. She has a tendency to get a little excited at times, so we have to stop it at times.
I'm soo happy I joined dodgerslist and was able to communicate with everyone. It really helped our family through this process since we did not have the funds to do surgery - and I guess in the end it wasn't truely 100% needed!
Thanks again. I will continue to respond and share our experiences with all of you!
Have a great week!

Katie, thanks for the update on Mimi! So happy to hear that she has had a nice recovery. Here are two links to help you slowly reintroduce her into activities and to safeguard your home for the IVDD dog: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/AfterCrateRest.htm and www.dodgerslist.com/literature/protectback.htm We surely appreciate your offer to respond to your fellow members who need encouragement and hope. Mimi is PROOF that IVDD is not a fatal disease and our pups can recover and live wonderful lives. Hope you and Mimi enjoy this lovely spring season. Best wishes, ~Lisa
