[Original subject line: Ovie's Conservative Journey ] ★1 Ovie's last weigh in was 17.1 kg. He is prescribed methocarbomal 300mg every 8 hours, gabapentin 300 mg every 8 hours. And Onsair 20 mg OD which is his NSAID. No stop date given.
[MED LIST/HISTORY- Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 17.1kg 6 y.o. 8/10 reporting GI issues loose stool ONSIOR (robenacoxib)as of 8/9: 20mgs ?x/day, for ? days, then TEST STOP for __ pain _neuro methocarbamol 300mgs 3x/day gabapentin 300 mgs 3x/day Ovie needs GI tract protector, Pepcid AC, on board for duration of ONSIOR! ]
★2 6 yo Beagle names Ovie. Owner is Erica M ★3 Two separate DVMs diagnosed Ovie with IVDD ★4 Last vet visit was August 9th, conservative method was suggested first as he had "too much function" for surgery at this stage. ★5 Still has a bit of issue with pain. New orthopedic foam bed has helped get him comfortable. Hoping for a progress check in on Tuesday with vet and plan to mention pain management as well as pepcid. Ovie yelps during transport from crate area to yard sometimes. Can be seen panting occasionally. Pain control seems to taper off an hour or two before next doses are due. ★6 Eating and drinking as normal. Has been eating Raw dog food patties to aid in taking meds. Will drink water when freshly offered. Looks to snack on what his family is eating. Poops seem to be onx every two days. Today's [8/11]was soft to begin but mushy afterwards. Could be due to [changing food?] soft food. No blood or mucus noted. Is a bit gassy. ★7 Currently can walk if back legs lifted and supported. Will not move back legs. Does have feeling and muscle tone. Will.move tail at times. ★8 Has newly begun urinating on own outside with assistance. Does not like abdomen palpated. Abdomen is always tense and hard to assess. When legs are supported he will release streams of urine 3-4 times. Seems like a good amount of voiding. Had peed the bed but it's been when he's trying to get up and relocate to release his bladder. Bladder seems less leaky [8/11] today. Yesterday a few times when ovie was lifted. He did spurt some urine.

Erica, welcome to the Forum. Will have more to share with you. But first priority is to deal with these 2 issues. #1 LOOSE STOOL It is now confusing with a change in food to Raw and the taking of Onsair. Both can cause GI tract issues (soft stool). Change in food is temporary. Onsair can lead to bleeding ulcers. TOP priority is to get Pepcid AC on board. Ask the vet in this particular way: Pepcid AC (famotidine) blocks the production of acid. Pepcid AC has a very limited potential for side effects. However, do make it a point to ask if your dog has any health issues that prevent the use of Pepcid AC (famotidine). A vet needs to be fully informed about everything your dog takes. Early signs of anti-inflammatory caused stomach damage starts with lip licking due to nausea, not eating, and vomiting. As damage increases, diarrhea occurs leading to serious bleeding ulcers and red or black blood in the stool. Bleeding ulcers not attended to can be life threatening. #2 PAIN A bit of pain is not good enough pain control. Full pain control happens when the vet gets feed back about his RX and then can adjust the meds to be perfect for your dog's needs of full round the clock, night and day and no pain surfacing prior to the next dose. Resolution of spinal cord inflammation/swelling provides the relief from pain. It can take an anti-inflammatory Onsair range of 7 to 30 days before all swelling is gone.
Pain Is Inevitable, Suffering Is Optional. The best pain medications control is using more than one approach to address pain from multiple fronts -- traMADol-general analgesic -- methocarbamol- muscle spasm pain -- gabapentin-nerve pain. All three pain meds are normally prescribed three times a day.
Adjusting meds by phone avoids a risky-to-the disc car transport. Describe the pain that you're seeing. STRICT REST is to perserve neuro function and allow self healing of disc.Tips for making the next 8 weeks of strict rest go smoother: dodgerslist.com/strict-rest-recovery-process/
