We have not seen any issues except he has not had a bowel movement yet. 4. Maxwell is a Hound/Mutt and my name is Karl 5. Diagnosis was a herniated disk. Our vet for surgery is ACVIM neurology.6. We brought Max to the neurologist emergency on Monday morning after the incident occurred Sunday evening, July 21. We discussed CONSERVATIVE vs. SURGERY on Monday and it was suggested that surgery would provide the best outcome for Max. Date of surgery was Tuesday July, 23, 2024 -- 4 weeks or more surgeon directed for post-op rest-- Home PT was taught 7. Max can sniff and squat (as best as possible) and then release urine and has bladder control. 8. Max can wobbly walk for a short distance and has the ability to move both legs some what. The left side is stronger than the right as the vest said the disk was on the right side. He can wag his tail well. We were recommended to this site in rehab, at the vet hospital. We look forward to being a part of this community to learn how best to care for Max ongoing and what to expect in recovery. Thank you, Karl

Karl, welcome to the Forum, we glad you have joined us. It really sounds like Max is on a very good path of self healing that nerve damage to improve rear leg wobbly walking with time. Just want to make sure that Max is not suffering ANY pain dose to dose of his meds. "not much" pain as you wrote would mean the meds are not yet correct for Max' body. Let us know he is pain free night and day. If any pain is actually surfacing, that would need to be reported to the surgeon that the meds could then be adjusted. CARE for Large Breeds: This is wonderful that Max can walk even if wobbly. It means you do not need to lift and carry him. We do have a page for large breed dog care tips. There might be something there that you might find useful... not a bad idea to just skim the ideas just to see: dodgerslist.com/2022/02/10/large-dog-care-tips-ivdd/Care tips in general. Our general page of tips covers a multitude of things from how to set up his mattress, calmers if can't relax in his recovery suite, and more..... check out this page: dodgerslist.com/strict-rest-recovery-process/1. What date did Max come home and start the Prednisone 10mgs 2x/day for 5 days? 2. What is the date the Fentayl Patch will expire?3. Could Max --- move his legs at all prior to surgery? --- was he able to right a knuckled under rear paw slowly or not at all?Just curious where the surgery /rehab clinic is that sent you here? Thank you in advance for registering and logging when posting, when things settle and your mind will allow. Is there any area of concern you have with Max's care or other topic?

Hi Paula. Thank you for the quick reply. I will fill in the answers below. To be more clear, I do not see or notice Max feeling any pain. IMO he is pain free. Also, to be more clear. He can walk with a wobble for only 4 or 5 feet. We are walking him in the backyard with the sling and he does quite well.
My only time sensitive concern is that he has not had a bowel movement since he returned to us [7/26] on Friday late afternoon. I do not believe he had one at the hospital.
A. His meds are: Prednisone as of 7/23 PM after the operation, 10mg. 1 tablet every 12 hours for 5 days. Then every 24 hours for 5 days. Then every other day till done Gabapentin 100 mg. capsules: 2 Capsules every 8 hours. Amantadine 100 mg.: 1 tablet every 24 hours until done. Prazosin 1 mg.: 1 capsule every 12 hours Fentanyl Transdermal Patch: Says it will keep him comfortable for 3-5 days and to remove the patch on 8/8/24. I am not sure if it was applied immediately after surgery or when he was released to us.
3. Prior to surgery Max could barely. There was some movement of effort but very minimal. The Dr. said he had feeling and motor skills in his back legs and feet before surgery. Based on this, she thought he would have a good change of getting back to normal post surgery.
When we walk him with the sling he does well. When he bends to urinate, or moves around in his cage his back foot turns on him.
Just curious where the surgery /rehab clinic is that sent you here? VMCLI [The Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island]
Thank you for you help and support. Karl -------
Disregard! Max just had his first bowel movement and all went well. We’re both relieved!

Karl, it is pretty normal for poops to take time to come back after all the pain meds that slow down the digestive tract. Good to hear Max pooped today! The nerve damage of knuckling under the (right?) paw will heal with time as well as the wobbly walking. It is still very early for the slowest part of the body to heal...the nerve healing department, healing will come! Karl, thank you for registering. Now you can set up for the handy auto emailed alerts when a reply is waiting for you. Go to the SURGERY Board: dodgerslist.boards.net/board/7/surgery1. Look for Max' thread and checkmark it. 2. Look for the white ACTIONS button towards top. 3. Select “Notification Options" from the pull down menu — check mark “NEW POST” change from never to INSTANT email — press the SAVE button. Click the “x” to close the window 4. Next choose the “Bookmark” See the tiny book symbol now! *
