Welcome Vicki! We are glad you have joined us all. It sounds from what you write that Layla is in comfort from pain right up to the next dose of gabapentin. Did we interpret your answers correctly? And also free of pain when having to move such as at potty time OR change positions in her crate? That is unusual as it normally takes 3 pain meds given every 8 hrs. So if Layla is not fully pain free round the clock (night and day), your vet needs to be aware by phone today to adjust pain meds. DURING a disc episode FYI'sResolution of spinal cord inflammation/swelling provides the relief from pain. It can take an anti-inflammatory (steroid or a non-steriodal NSAID) a range of 7 to 30 days before all swelling is gone.
The best pain medications control is using more than one approach to address pain from multiple fronts (traMADol-general analgesic, methocarbamol- muscle spasm pain, gabapentin-nerve pain). All three pain meds last for about 8 hrs, thus prescribed every 3 hours (three times a day).
Dogs don't speak up at first signs of trouble like a person would. By the time we notice black or red blood in the stools, things can quickly go from bleeding ulcers to a life threatening perforated stomach. If vet says your dog does not have any health issues, then go to the grocery store to purchase over the counter Pepcid AC containing one single active ingredient (famotidine). The usual dose of Pepcid AC (famotidine) for dogs is 0.44mg per pound, 30 mins before the anti-inflammatory and thereafter every 12 hours for as long as your dog is on the anti-inflammatory. thumb.ibb.co/mEGRuy/91x_Aj_s00z_L_SY355.jpgUnderstanding Prednisone during a disc episode The 7-day prednisone course will begin to taper on Tues 3/26. The reduction of pred will allow YOU a window into how much painful swelling has been resolved. You should be able to give a quick and accurate assessment if unmasked pain reveals itself when the taper starts. Vets either call for the stop or the backing off of pain-masking painmeds. Which does your vet want for gabapentin on 3/26??
It is important that you understand the hormone Prednisone use during a disc episode. What you learn puts you in a good position to ask good questions and understand your vet's treatment. Please read: ==> dodgerslist.com/2020/04/18/steroids-vs-nsaids/
Does Layla have all the dangerous signs of stomach damage? If so Pepcid AC + sucralfate are both needed now, TODAY. It was not clear with Question #3 what your answer was.
What do you observe regarding "not her perky self." Does she not move? does not look to see what is going on in the house? Doesn't respond to your happy talk?
Let us know if there is anything specifically we can help you with....more on strict rest (carry to and from the potty place), or anything.
