[Original subject line: Sepaeation anxiety- what to try first?] My dachshund is 6 yrs old, had surgery in April 2023 and recovered well but is
paralyzed in rear legs. I have crated him when I leave the house and for 9 months, he was fine. He now is frantic, barking, panting etc while I am out. He is perfectly fine when I am home. My vent suggested 5 things so I now have the Adaptil plug-in and waiting for CBD chews my vet suggested. i Want to gate him in the small kitchen with pads and dog bed but wonder if dragging in small space is harmful? i believe I have to reprogram his thinking somehow but I read it takes weeks to months to do that. i do not know where to start or how much change could be more upsetting to him |

Getting your dog (name?) tired before leaving house MIGHT just play a big roll in keeping him calm. If you can take him for a good walk in his cart that may be enough to tucker him out. Or mental stimulation can be just as tiring.
Your dog is well past the required weeks of post op rest, so he does not need to restrict his movement as the dogs in the video below. He won't need to be inside a crate for this. Still mental stimulation for your dog can be tiring, too.

Google for "separation anxiety" There are many things you can do to re-train your dog.
