Barkley, welcome! I'm Paula what's your girl's name? Please introduce your dog to give us information to work with. See the questions at the end.
A disc episode is not a death sentence. There are many options that may not have been considered with loss of bladder control during conservative treatment.
Until we know more about your girl, see if any of these things can be considered with your vet.
DRUGS TO MANAGE EMPTYING BLADDER
Where does the vet believe the disc is located? The disc location may be related to being hard to express.
The neck C1-7, Chest T1-13, the low back L1-7
1) Discuss a med to relax the sphincter neck of the bladder for easier expressing. Prazosin, Tamsulosin, Phenoxybenzamine, etc.
2) A neuro surgeon consult is not just for the purpose of a surgery. If your local vet is not comfortable in their knowledge of using meds to treat Bladder issues, then that would be a reason to get a consultation with a neuro surgeon who does this daily.
Reading references about home cathing a dog until neuro functions can self-heal.
And if a dog would not be able to self heal the bladder function over time, the dog can continue to be cathed daily at home by the owner. One Registered Registered Neuro Vet tech commented on her experience of two dogs who never regained control who were catheterized daily by their owners. And one of them has been doing that for about 5 years now. It works for them.
