Don't be fooled by "non-steroid". Whether steroid or a non-steroid the stomach MUST be protected. And now since the black blood, must be double protected with not just Pepcid AC but also with Sucralfate.
1) This FDA type of warning

"
What are the possible side effects that may occur in my dog during Carprofen Chewable Tablets therapy?Carprofen Chewable Tablets, like other drugs, may cause some side effects. Serious but rare side effects have been reported in dogs taking NSAIDs, including Carprofen Chewable Tablets. Serious side effects can occur with or without warning and in rare situations result in death.
T
he most common NSAID-related side effects generally involve the stomach (such as bleeding ulcers), and liver or kidney problems.
2) Veterinary Pharmacist explains to veterinarians:“As the classic NSAID toxicity,
GI ulceration is the most common and important adverse class effect associated with NSAIDs.
When switching a patient from one NSAID to another (when no side effects have been seen), a washout period of 5 to 7 days minimizes chances for adverse drug interactions. Informing clients of the potential adverse effects of NSAID therapy and signs of NSAID toxicity greatly increases the likelihood of safe use of this class of drugs.
In cases in which an animal is switched from one NSAID to another OR has been treated with corticosteroids, there should be a washout period before initiating therapy with a different NSAID to avoid adverse drug interactions.
Based on current opinion leaders’ recommendations, a minimum washout period of 5 to 7 days would be appropriate for an animal that has been treated with a non-aspirin NSAID or a shorter-duration corticosteroid (e.g., oral prednisone, dexamethasone).
Because all NSAIDs have toxic potential, veterinarians and pet owners should never consider any NSAID to be completely safe. ”

As you can see in Monitoring Ozzy's neuro functions, he is still a good candidate to heal his disc under conservative treatment.
Calm your mind. Gain a realistic idea of how long it takes to heal. This is one of the most frequent questions asked. Here is the answer along with tools to help you during your dog's recovery time:

MONITORING NEURO FUNCTIONS
Let us know exactly where Ozzy is with his rear leg weaknessAs damage to the spinal cord increases, there can be a predictable stepwise deterioration of functions if excessive back/neck movement for example.
1.
6/28 Pain with initial tear of disc and ensuing swelling
2. Wobbly walking
legs cross
3. Nails/toes scuffing floor
4. Paws knuckle under. Dog is slow to correct or can't right the paw(s) at all
5. Weak/little leg movement,
can't move up into a stand
6. Legs do not work at all (paralysis, dog is down)
7. Bladder control is lost. Leaks on you when lifted. Can no longer sniff and then pee on that old urine spot outdoors.
8. Tail wagging with joy is lost
9.
Deep pain sensation, the last neuro function,
a critical indicator for nerves to be able to self heal after surgery or with conservative treatment. If surgery is not an option (for whatever reason) then the best option is conservative therapy.
Surgery can still be successful in the window of 12-24 hours after loss of deep pain sensation. Even after that window of time, there can still be a good outcome. Each hour that passes decreases that chance.
Precious hours can be lost with a general vet who gets DPS wrong. Trust only the word of a neuro (ACVIM) or ortho (ACVS) surgeon about DPS.
