[Original subject line: Disc degeneration] Hi. Not sure if correct to place to ask but my 9 year old roughcollie has been diagnosed with three degenerate discs along her spine. I am seeing vet that also does physio and I do physio with her twice a day. My question is has anyone tried or used the li’il back bracer. Hoping for advice before I purchase as I am in aus and it’s a USA site. Thanks

Kim, welcome to the Forum. Our aim is to quickly determine where to best help your dog. Your answers to ==> these questions provides necessary facts to insure no wrong assumptions, no wrong comments are given. Until we know all about your dog with facts, dates, etc, best is to explain some things for you: Discs can be a tricky topic. There are a bewildering number of other diseases that can mimic the symptoms of the only disease this Forum focuses on —IVDD. Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is something a dog is born with. It is a early, premature degeneration of the discs. Most dogs born with this disease, reveal it typically around 4-7 years old. But can be as early as one year old! IVDD occurs most commonly in small breed dogs such as the dachshund, pekingese, shih tzu, toy or miniature poodle, cocker spaniel, basset hound, chihuahua, and beagle. However, it can occur in some large breed dogs including the labrador retriever, German shepherd, dalmatian, pit bull terrier, and rottweiler. Shortcut thru IVDD... what it is, care, living many happy years ahead with your dog: ==> dodgerslist.com/2020/06/26/time-and-ivdd/DIAGNOSIS It is important to know precisely what the diagnosis for your dog is. The diagnosis might best come from a higher trained specialist (an ortho surgeon or a neuro surgeon) rather than a local general DVM vet. Humans and dogs will naturally with age develop discs which have degenerated to no longer being a cushy pillow of sorts between the bony vertebrae. So a diagnosis that just says "degenerative disc" does not give enough information. Some disc involved diseases can have complete opposite treatments. 1. A number of other diseases which mimic IVDD might have the opposite treatment where physio would be included.2. IVDD - 🚩With the first suspicion of a disc episode taking place, STRICT limited movement of the back with a crate is top priority, not a back brace. 🚩How to implement the #1 care of STRICT rest with a current IVDD episode: dodgerslist.com/2020/05/14/strict-rest-recovery-process/ 🚩 The most asked question "What is the length of time for my dog to improve?" Answer: ==> dodgerslist.com/most-asked-disc-disease-ivdd-questions 🚩Back brace issues as related to IVDD are discussed here: ==> dodgerslist.com/2020/02/24/devices-supplements
So if you have any sense that your dog might be suffering with an IVDD disc episode: • Crate at once, cease physio. • Get a 2nd opinion diagnosis with a specialist who has extra specialized training and experiences with these types of diseases. We will be watching for an update post from you.
