[Original subject line:Max / Laura and David’s Corgi ]
Max is 7, had a herniation at C4 and the ventral slot procedure on 2/21/23 at Kansas State University hospital.
On 2/19 he started showing early IVDD signs, yelping, shaking, by 2/20 was swaying while walking. By 2/21 he was not standing and by the time we got to K state (3 hour drive) max could not stand at all. MRI revealed IVDD herniation. Two other discs are calcified.
Max did well in surgery and peed the next day, went home in 48 hours! Max could stand and walk right away. He did short surgeon directed walks 5 mins in yard to potty. He pooped 2 days later but continued on codeine and NSAID for several days.
Max does not appear to have any more signs, maybe some instability when turning. Our house is all stairs so when he’s not in the kennel he’s confined to first level and carried up and down stairs. He does slightly longer walks now. Lifts leg to pee, can balance. Upset about his restrictions and doesn’t like kennel, ramp, or inability to run!
More later.

Welcome Laura. Did I get it correct that Laura is doing the posting? I'm sure you and David are very happy with the outcome of the surgery. Max having the ability to walk right after surgery is wonderful!! For how many weeks did the surgeon direct for post-op rest that includes at home walking PT? Often the post-op rest is for 4 or 6 weeks to allow all the surgical areas to heal. Once we know the graduation date from post-op rest, we have lots of tips and ideas for living a dog born with IVDD. Plus how to gradually and safely introduce Max back to family life and activities. I think you will be interested in learning all you can about the disease Max has— prematurely aging discs. What calcified discs mean: dodgerslist.com/2020/06/05/calcified-discs-meaning/ Shortcut thru IVDD a ten minute overview: dodgerslist.com/2020/06/26/time-and-ivdd/Is there anything in particular you wonder about that we could address?
