[Original subject line:Arched back, 5yo Coton, surgery 12/23/2022 ]
Hello Is it normal for a dog to develop a slight arch in their spine after surgery?
Our 5yo 13lb male Coton had surgery 12/23/2022. The details of his diagnoses and surgery are below. He's been on strict crate rest since surgery and took the post surgery NSAID and Gabapentin as directed. Currently he's only taking Gabapentin as needed for the anxiety caused by crate rest. Our next follow up is next week 1/29/2023.
About 2 weeks ago I started noticing an arch in his spine, basically in the same area as the surgery. It's not severe or hugely noticable, but if you were looking for it you can see that his back is little bit curved. He doesn't seem to be in pain and his hind leg use has gone from"drunk sailor"(pre-surgery) to almost normal. The arch is present regardless of what he's doing.
Diagnosis; "1. Acute T12-T13 intervertebral disc extrusion causing moderate to severe left ventrolateral spinal cord compression 2. Diffuse intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) with mild chronic T13-L1 intervertebral disc extrusion"
Surgery: "A left T12-T13 hemilaminectomy with fenestration of T12-T13 and T13-L1 was performed."
He has a 90% prognosis for improvement of gait, comfort, and bladder control and 10-20% chance of re-herniating the same disc, esp. in 1st 2 months. He's on strict crate rest w his next follow up 1/29/23.
Meds: Was on Gabapentin and NSAIDs,

Alyssa, welcome to the Forum. We are glad you've joined us all. It is marvelous to hear your dog (what's his name?) has returned to an almost normal gait post-op! For how many weeks did the surgeon want for post-op rest including any PT he directed? The rest is for all of the surgical areas to heal. We'll have some great information to share with you when we learn the graduation date from post-op rest. ARCHED BACK
Check out Dr. Isaacs' (Neuro surgeon) comment: dodgerslist.com/2020/06/18/arched-backAfter your neuro's exam, let us know what he believes the situation may be for your dog.

Thank you so much for the link to the information about the arched back after surgery! It's exactly what I was looking for. So strange that I couldn't find any such information via Google or ChatGpt3. My name is Al and our dog's name is Graham. His neurologist prescribed 4-6 weeks post op strict crate rest w PT exercises.Im not sure when his grad date is.
Thanks again! I wish we'd known about this board before the surgery but better late than never. Thanks, Al
