After supporting my other rescue doxie who came to me downed and unlikely to walk, my healthy 11 yr old Frankie went down [1/27] yesterday.
I'm familiar with IVDD but not prepared for seeing my healthy, active, goofball go down.
After waiting 6 hours at the emergency vet and didn't even get seen we went home for rest and love last night. I knew she needed to be resting since we wouldn't get vet care last night. This morning we were able to [1/28] see our regular vet. She confirmed conservative treatment and have started: Methocarbamol, Gabapentin, pred, tramadol and of course pepcid AC.
[MED LIST/HISTORY- Moderator's Note. Please do not edit weight 11 y.o. prednisone as of 1/28: ?mgs ?x/day for ? days, then a test taper for: _pain / _neuro methocarbamol ?mg ?x/day gabapentin ?mg ?x/day traMADol ?mg ?x/day Pecpcid AC (famotidine) ?mg ?x/day ]
I have been struggling to figure out the potty situation. Frankie has always boycotted potty in the snow and would only do so begrudgingly. She finally at 5:30 went pee outside, essentially on herself bc she can't hold herself up. She has yet to go poop.
She is enjoying the excessive nap time and extra pets and snuggles.
Day 1.

Laura, welcome! We are glad you were here. So sorry that Frankie did not get the help she needed at ER. Good to hear you provided her with the single most important part of crate rest on the 27th. Today is day two of the eight weeks. Mark your calendar for March 24 graduation day. Can you tell us a bit more about her medications? The more details we know the better our comments for Frankie can be. Give the mgs and the frequency you actually give the meds (include the range if vet provided them.) Pepcid AC (famotidine) also: ?mg ?x/day For how many days will prednisone be given until the taper starts? The taper serves a different purpose. The important part are the number of days before tapering. Tell us about her neuro status:---Can she move the back legs even if very weak such as to reposition her body in the suite? --- Does she knuckle under the rear paws when standing with your support? --- Does she leak on you when lifted? POTTY TIME Carry her to and from the recovery suite out to the potty place and then allow a very few limited footsteps with the front legs. Use a sling (long winter scarf, ace bandage, belt) to save your back and help to support her rear end and keep it from tipping over. A harness and 6 foot leash is to control speed and keep footsteps to minimum as you stand in one spot. In my opinion it is far easier at potty time to set up and ex-pen, or if you have snow, make a snow fence of about 6 foot diameter. This is an excellent alternative to minimizing footsteps with the physical and visual to indicate there will be no sniff festing going on! If the weather is wicked cold/windy, you might want to set up a potty place in your garage. Put down a Pee pad that is scented with urine from another dog or some old urine from Frankie. Sop up a bit of the urine with a paper towel and store it in a Ziploc bag for future potty breaks. I'm in Montana, so I like the back deck for a potty place. Freshen up the small potty place with a shovel or two of new snow. At night the porch light is handy. With the expen on the deck, it lets the dog know the boundries. All you need is a rear sling to support her from falling.
