[Original subject line:Charlie IVDD ] i.postimg.cc/HndzvQRF/dox.jpgMy Charlie is a 6 year old dachshund. He is 18 pounds and was first diagnosed with IVDD on 11/7/22. His back left leg wouldn't work and he was yelping in pain. Gabapentin , 100 mg, .85 cc was given once per day. The vet said he had deep pain, which was a good sign. Improvement was noted after a few days but we went back to the vet on 11/18/22 because he started to decline again. She added Metacam 1.5 mg, .5 cc daily. Also, Robaxin 100 mg, 1.3 cc every 8 hours. [MED LIST/HISTORY- Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 18 lbs 6 y.o. 11/7 back left leg would not work 11/7 no anti-inflammatory Rx Metacam as of 11/18: 1.5mgs 1x/day for ? days, then test STOP robaxin (methocarbamol) 100mgs 3x/day gabapentin 100mgs 1x/day Charlie needs GI tract protector, Pepcid AC, on board for duration of Metacam! ]
He can now stand and wobbly walk. His ability to pee and poo are normal. His appetite is good. I can lift him without any yelping. What else can I do or expect?

Welcome to the Forum. It looks like your name is Lori (from Texas)??? Hi, I'm Paula. I'm glad to hear that Charlie has self healed enough to move up into a stand by himself and he can wobbly walk. AND he is not in pain. Here is what you should do until Charlie's disc has healed. Stick with STRICT rest for 8 weeks to heal the disc. This means: ◼︎no laps ◼︎no couches ◼︎no baths ◼︎no sleeping with you ◼︎ inside of the recovery suite for food and water. ◼︎ Carried to and from the potty place. Then only a very few minimal footsteps to take care of business. ◼︎no chiro therapy WHYs: dodgerslist.com/2020/04/22/chiropractic/ ◼︎no dragging or meandering at potty times. ◼︎no PT for conservative dogs during 8 weeks to heal disc ◼︎ Transports are always a risk to the disc of too much movement. Vet visits must be weighed risk vs. benefit for dogs with little to mild neuro diminishment. Updates, med adjustments can often be handled over the phone with the vet. Knowledge is key! ▶︎ Roadmap for your fridge. Stay the course, avoid dangerous detours for the healing disc: dodgerslist.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Roadmap-for-Fridge.pdf ▶︎ Tips and ideas to help you make the rest of the 8 weeks go smoothly while sticking to the strict rest principals of conservative treatment: dodgerslist.com/2020/05/14/strict-rest-recovery-process/▶︎ Understand the disease your dog was born with: Shortcut thru IVDD: dodgerslist.com/2020/06/26/time-and-ivdd/ Details help us understand things. There are a few things we'd like to know more about: • On 11/7 was Metacam Rx'd or only gabapentin? • Since 11/7 had you given Charlie 100% STRICT rest inside of a recovery suite (ex-pen, wire crate or a baby's Pac N Play)? • Why do you think Charlie had a set back on 11/18? 1. Did he escape from his suite and re-tear his healing disc and the need to start from square on in counting out 8 weeks? 2. Did some medication end/stop too early revealing pain and neuro diminishment to surface? 3. What did you observe him doing where you used the word "decline?" We look forward to learning more about Charlie and his treatment with your answers.
