My Sassy is 14 years old and weighs 13.8lbs, she went down in her back 9/30. I immediately took her to the vet they gave her a steroid shot and sent us home with Prednisone 5mg, she wagged her tail a couple of times on 9/30 while we were at the vet. We came home and I tried to make her comfortable. She quit eating and drinking. This morning 10/1 she seemed to be in so much pain so I took her to an emergency vet they gave ✙Methocarbamol 750mg 1/4 tab every 12 hours, ✙Tramadol 50 mg every 12 hours, and ✙Gabapentin 100mg every 12 hours.
[MED LIST/HISTORY- Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 13.8 lbs 14 y.o. name of steroid shot 9/30 prednisone as of 10/1: ?mgs ?x/day for ? days, then a test taper for: _pain / _neuro ✙Methocarbamol 750mg 187.5mgs 2x/day ✙Tramadol 50 mg 2x/day ✙Gabapentin 100mg 2x/day Sassy needs GI tract protector, Pepcid AC, on board for duration of prednisone! ]
She has not went potty since 9/30 I have taken her out a few times with a sling but she still isn’t using the restroom. The emergency vet said she should go when she gets relaxed. I dissolved her meds in either water or chicken broth and syringed them in her mouth. I also gave her a couple of syringes of baby food. She can not move her back legs at all the vet on 10/1 says she has some feeling in one of her back paws. The vet on 9/30 suggested acupuncture. I am in the process of setting up her creat. The vet on 9/30 said she just needed a flat surface but after reading other post it seems like I need to creat her.

Krista, welcome to the Forum. Because there is some missing information to help form our comments, will need a bit more from you. In addition make sure you read the links provided as an important part of learning about IVDD to best care for Sassy. IS HER PAIN CONTROLLED? Is all the pain fully hidden with the addition of methocarbamol, traMADol and Gabapentin. IF not, immediately call to get the 3 pain meds Rx'd for every 8 hours. Pain meds last for about 8 hrs. Giving them every 12 hrs typically allows pain to surface prior to next dose. NOTE: traMADol and Gabapentin ARE VERY BITTER. Do not crush up with H2o and syringe. Instead pill Sassy:
SPECIFICALLY WHERE ARE HER NEURO FUNCTIONS? Please give us more detail on her back legs. Where is she 2 thru 6 in below list?Does she leak on you when lifted? A sign she has lost bladder control and need to be expressed. Read, view and go for a lesson 1st thing Sun morning at ER. LEARN MORE: dodgerslist.com/2020/05/05/bladder-bowel-care/
Take her out to an old pee spot in the grass. Let her sniff and see if she makes the decision to release urine on that spot. That would be proof of bladder control. STEROIDS: Name of steroid shot on 9/30?Prednisone: started on what date? How many mgs dose/ how many times a day? For how many days until the taper starts?GI TRACT PROTECTION If Sassy has no health issues, get her on Pepcid AC (famotidine) to suppress the acids the steroid shot and prednisone can cause. Then keep your vet in the loop soonest possible. Understand the reason to protect the stomach: dodgerslist.com/2020/05/06/stomach-protection/The recovery suite for a disc acts like a cast for a broken arm. It is essential that it be only large enough to easily turn around. Can stand on all four legs. And when lying down can fully stretch out the legs. An ex-pen, a wire crate, a baby's pack N play are good types of recovery suites to keep the back with little movement and prevent permanent nerve damage..
