Hi, my girl is Lilo. She is a approx 5 year old long haired doxie. We are day 6 post surgery . Paralyzed back legs, on tramadol 2.5 mg 3x day, Gabapentin 1.2ml and prednisone taper down to 2.5 mg every 48 hrs for 3 days.
[MED LIST/HISTORY- Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 13.5lbs 5 y.o. prednisone as of 9/14?: tapering gabapentin 1.2mL ?x/day traMADol 2.5mgs 3x/day]
She is starting to urinate on her own when walked with sling. She is 13.5 lbs. Are there any good supplements for me to give her, and to help her brother Stitch not end up with same issues?

Welcome! Hi, my name is Paula, what's yours? A quick answer about supplements for IVDD dogs: Dr. Isaacs Neurology: dodgerslist.com/2022/02/07/supplements/ Other IVDD related things: dodgerslist.com/2020/02/24/devices-supplementsIf Lilo's brother is genetically related, there is thought there is a genetic component to disc disease. 1 in 4 small breed, short legged dachsies may be born with IVDD. The only way to tell if a dog was born with IVDD, is when it is first discovered by the symptoms of pain or neuro diminishment. Since Lilo is known to have been born with IVDD, you will want to bone up on this disease. Check out "Shortcut thru IVDD" to become the IVDD savvy pet parent your dog will need to rely on: dodgerslist.com/2020/06/26/time-and-ivdd/ Would you introduce Lilo? It is difficult to comment not knowing the specifics and dates pertaining to your Lilo. It helps us work together with you and avoid offering ideas that could cause harm or lead the discussion in the wrong direction delaying things — please share a bit more detail with us: QUESTIONS❖1 Is there still currently any pain nearing next dose of gabapentin and traMADol? ◻︎ shivering-trembling ◻︎ slow to move ◻︎ tight tense tummy ◻︎ arched back, ears pinned back ◻︎ head held high or nose to the ground ◻︎ yelping when picked up or moved ◻︎ restless, can't find a comfortable position ◻︎ slow or reluctant to move much in crate such as shift positions ◻︎ not their normal perky interested in life selves Full pain relief is expected in 1 hour and stays that way dose to dose. If the pain meds are not yet right, as the eyes and ears for your vet, please call your vet ASAP to report your observations so meds can be adjusted.
❖3 Any GI Tract problems? —Eating and drinking OK? No nausea/not eating, no vomit? —Poops OK? Normal firmness & color -no dark black or bright red blood indicating bleeding ulcers? No diarrhea?
❖5 Can your dog specifically sniff an old pee spot outside, squat and then release urine which is bladder control? – OR -- Do you find wet bedding or leaks on you when lifted which are indication of overflowing bladder and still has loss of bladder control? LIFT and CARRY (support both ends, back horizontal to the ground) i2.wp.com/dodgerslist.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/lift-carry-horizontal.png
DOGs with BLADDER CONTROL: Using a sling (long winter scarf, ace bandage, belt) will save your back and help to support paralyzed legs and butt from tipping over. A harness and 6 foot leash is to control speed and keep footsteps to a minimum as you stand in one spot. An ex-pen in the grass is an excellent alternative to minimizing footsteps with the physical and visual to indicate there will be no sniff festing going on!
❖5 For how many weeks did the surgeon want for post-op rest. Usual is 4 weeks, but can be longer depending on the case. What did the surgeon direct for post-op at home PT? And PT from a clinic?
❖6 -- Currently can Lilo move the legs at all? --wag the tail when you specifically do some happy talk? -- attempt to use back legs when trying to reposition in the recovery suite?
Look forward to learning more about Lilo with your answers.
