[Original subject line: Hurt Border Collie ] i.postimg.cc/Kc9Lft56/conserv_paralysis.pngMy border collie escaped from the garden. I belive she may of fallen and hit a tree on the way down. She has seen a vet [9/2?] (several times over the last two days)They are suggesting MRI and surgery, a cost my insurance can not cover.
It's based on the fact my dog hasn't past urine or a stool in 36 hours+ A friend suggested here for help. YES painYES reluctant to move much in crate such as shift positions or slow, ginger movements NO shivering, trembling NO yelping when picked up or moved NO tight tense tummy NO can’t find a comfortable position, appears restless YES Arched back YES head held highIT SEEM TO BE EFFECTING BOTH BACK LEGS Holding front or back leg flamingo style not wanting to bear weight DEFINITELY NOT Not their normal perky selves? SHES ON 3 PAINKILLERS A DAY, 2 20KG 7 y.ogabapentin caps 300mg 2-3 times a day cladaxca 250mg twice a day loxicom 10ml once a day date of a NSAID stop? N/A

PEPCID AC: (famotidine).I'LL ASK THIS TOMORROW ☆ 3 --SHE IS EATING ☆ 4 BORDER COLLIE , MAY. KEV ☆ 5 no real diagnosis. fist vet just said she's sore, nothing broken. but my dogs ability to walk [neuro decline] became worse, so he perscibed more painkillers (gabapentin). after 24 hours of not passing any urine or stool a second vet at the practice belives a her spine may be injured. they did a scan and saw that my dogs bowels and bladder are full. the vet did some pressure tests. she pressed quite hard on my dogs back paws until my dog acknowledged the vet was doing something. by this time my dog can no longer bare any weight on her back legs. the vet tried to gently squezze her bladder, tried a relaxent, and showed me how to sling her. but still nothing.
my pet insurance will not cover the cost of an mri and surgery.
please i need help to get my dog to pass urine and stools.
-- is the vet a general dvm? no idea -- or a specialist surgeon: acvim neurology or acvs ortho? no, surgery is reffered elsewhere
☆ 6 what was the date you saw the vet for conservative treatment? n/a ☆ 7 NO- specifically sniff and squat and then release urine l eaks on you when lifted NO ☆ 8 Currently can your dog wobbly walk? NO move the legs at all? NO wag the tail with happy talk. YES

Kev, welcome to the Forum. I'm so sorry to hear of the fall which is causing pain and neuro function decline in the spinal cord. Stay strong, stay positive and do not give up hope that May will again be able to enjoy family life with you.
** Let us know your City/Country.Do be clear in your own mind that if a surgery for whatever reason is not an option, then conservative treatment is the best option. 🍫1) ATTENTION: Conservative treatment demands the dog be fully out of pain dose to dose and round the clock..you are reporting pain! Pain deters healing. Your dog is on only ONE pain med. Pain meds only last for 8 hrs. ADVOCATE politely, but strongly for 3 pain meds EACH to be on board 3x/day: -- 1. gabapentin for nerve pain. Which had you ACTUALLY given gabapentin in the past-- 2 or 3x/day? If not 3x/day, start immediately giving every 8 hrs (3x/day)
-- 2. methocarbamol for muscle contraction pain especially with NECK discs. -- 3. traMADol as the general analgesic 🍫2) STRICT rest is the single most important care you can give. It prevents a worse tear of the disc which could result in further neuro function decline. Let us know you are on the same page about STRICT rest: ◼︎no laps ◼︎no couches ◼︎no baths ◼︎no sleeping with you ◼︎no chiro therapy WHYs: dodgerslist.com/2020/04/22/chiropractic/ ◼︎no dragging at potty times, or if has no control when expressing her bladder. ◼︎no PT for conservative dogs during 8 weeks to heal disc ◼︎At home laser or acupuncture for neuro damage is best to avoid risky vet transports. ◼︎ avoid dangerous detours. Follow the "Roadmap." Tape it to your fridge. D/L and print out: dodgerslist.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Roadmap-for-Fridge.pdf Transports are always a risk to the disc of too much movement. Vet visits must be weighed risk vs. benefit for dogs.
🍫3) conservative treatment will get the spinal cord swelling down in a range of 7-30 days. Loxicam- how many day are you to give it?...this IS important information. What date did Loxicam start?
Answers to these additional questions will help us better to prepare specific comments for May. Fill us in where you can -- Did May have an X-ray to determine if there was a broken vertebrae that might be cause of the nerve damage (loss of back leg movement, loss of bladder control)? X-ray can't proof a disc episode, but only give suspicion of one. X-ray show hard tissue like bone but not soft tissue like discs, spinal cord.-- Date she fell? Date saw vet #1? Date she say vet #2? -- Does she tend to move only her eyes rather than turn her head to look at stuff?-- Why was an antibiotic (Cladaxca)Rx'd? Date it was Rx'd? -- Clarify: can May sniff old pee spot and then choose to release urine? -- Clarify: Does May leak on you when lifted? Not sure from what you wrote if bladder control has been lost. Please confirm. Transport to a vet involves risk of too much movement of the spine with potential to then damage the early healing disc, especially with a large dog. HOWEVER the benefit to learn how to express is a high health concern that outweighs the risk of a vet transport. Use rolled up blankets/towels snug up to May's body. This keeps her body from movement as you take a corner or brake. HINT: Write your reply using QUICK REPLY at the bottom of this page. QUICK REPLY allows you to answer a question. Then you can scroll back up to read the next question. We only want to read your words (not our words). So no need to quote things we have written as it becomes confusing who wrote what. Simply write a complete sentence with a subject and what you want to say about it. Thank you very much for helping us.
