Hello! Answers to required questions below.
1 Luna weighs 11 lbs
Pain started on 7/29 Meds prescribed by vet: Carprofen (NSAID) 12.5 mg every 12 hours for 5 days Gabapentin 50 mg every 8 to 12 hours for 7 days
[MED LIST/HISTORY- Moderator's Note. Please do not edit ] 11 lbs 3 1/2 y.o. carprofen as of 7/29: 12.5mgs 2x/day for 5 days, 8/3 a test STOP : √8/20 pain / _neuro as of 8/23: 12.5mgs 2x/day for 5 days; 8/28 test STOP : __ pain/ 8/? neuro gabapentin 50mgs which? 8 or 12 hrs dosing 8/31ish? progressed to wobby walk neuro appt 9/13 Luna would need Pepcid AC for duration of carprofen course] Seemed to be healing well by end of 2nd week, 8/13.
Reoccurance of symptoms on 8/20, another course of medicine was prescribed same dosages, started 8/23. Symptoms progressed to neurological involvement, wobbly walk, weak when squatting. Can walk, can hold bladder. Refered to Neurologist, upcoming appt on 9/13/22.
-- If on NSAID ... what is the stop date?
Stopped carprofen on 8/28. Pepcid was not suggested or offered by vet but was told carprofen can only be given with food. ★2 is a 3 year 6 mos old, Miniature Dachshund, my name is Melissa
★3 No official diagnosis, took her into the ER where she was exined by a DVM for suspected back pain, trembling, would not jump up, beginning on 7/29. Have been referred to a neurologist for evaluation. Appointment on 9/13, still two weeks away.
★4 Upcoming appt with Neurologist on 9/13
I did not crate train her as a pup (kicking myself now). She experiences extreme anxiety in crate now. She is instead confined to a very small area, harnessed, leashed but not crated. Does anyone have tips on how I can get her over crate anxiety? I'd rather she was crated.
★5 No apparent pain while [meaning?] meds. She's very bored and seems depressed.
★6 Eating and drinking ok, a little less than normal of both. Poop is ok, but can't squat for long starts walking around to poop. Normal looking poop.
★7 She has a wobbly walk, back legs give out easily.
★8 She can sniff. So far can squat to pee but starts to bounce while squatting.

Melissa, welcome to the Forum. You have found the right place to quickly get up to speed on Luna's disease. -- What veterinary professionals say about Dodgerslist: dodgerslist.com/2020/04/20/education-team-ivdd -- What owners say about Dodgerslist: dodgerslist.com/2022/08/22/what-owners-say-about-dodgerslist -- While on the main Dodgerslist website, explore the navigation bar or type in a topic in the orange search field at top of every page. There had to be diagnosis at ER in order for there to be a treatment. Until you feel like an IVDD savvy pet parent, these are items to address: Trying to understand the reason(s) for progression to neuro loss to allow adjustments to help Luna. -- 1) Is the recovery area only large enough to stand on on fours, turn around easily and when lying down to fully strectch out the legs. Limited movement is how the disc heals and avoids a retear of the disc with a potential for nerve loss. -- 2) Potty time is also VERY strict with very, very minimal footsteps to take care of business. Let us understand if she had she been allowed only a few footsteps to potty? • Carried to and from the 6 foot diameter potty place? • Leash & harness to control speed and footsteps? Sling to prevent rear from tipping over? • A harness and 6 foot leash is to control speed and keep footsteps to minimum as you stand in one spot. • An ex-pen in the grass is an excellent alternative to minimizing footsteps with the physical and visual to indicate there will be no sniff festing going on!
** -- 3) Clarify which meds are currently on board • Give the dose in mgs for each med • Give the frequency you actually give each med CURRENTLY is Luna in any pain? If in pain nearing next dose or when having to move, why is carprofen not on board or another anti-inflammatory drug that specifically works to resolve painfully inflamed tissue around the spinal cord. Was there a 3rd course of carprofen, for how many days? Date started/date to end. HIGHLY RECOMMEND learning how anti-inflammatories are used during a disc episode so you are able to advocate for Luna: dodgerslist.com/2020/04/18/steroids-vs-nsaids/ 4) Date wobbly walking first started? 5) Did Luna ever see her own DVM vet or just the ER DVM vet? 6) Emergency Crate training: If need be calmers or Rx drugs to help her to relax in a recovery suite: dodgerslist.com/2020/02/24/tips-to-help-with-recovery-suite/Lots more handy member ideas for making the STRICT rest period go smoother: dodgerslist.com/2020/05/14/strict-rest-recovery-process/Look forward to your answers so we know best where to focus on helping Luna heal her disc. With STRICT rest, Luna can heal her disc and even heal her nerve damage (wobbly walk) with time.
