My dachshund best Friend has lost the use of his back legs This all started a few weeks back and brought Him to the Vet here in Ottawa Canada .. I had noticed the day before he seem to be having issues with getting around and late night he seems to have lost his back legs movement
When I went to the vet she checked him over and suggested there might be some kind of picked nerve and he did not seem to be in any pain @ the time and was waging his tail.
She thought that some meds could help and put him on the following: Steriods – Prednisone/prednisolone which was twice a day for 5 days then down to once a day after that and every two days after that until the Med are all gone.
As well she suggested that I give him something for his stomach 5mg Pepcid (famotidine) with every pill.
The next day he was in some real bad pain and called the vet and she gave me some Robaxin which after a few days he was resting and seems to be pain free.
I as well have made him a cage so he can not move around much Your site he has help me with learning about his problem and ways that others have over come issues.
Now its a few weeks in and he has not waged his tail and has bladder issues but seems to have poop control but when I pick him up he licks my face ( normal for him)
but of late he has started to chew or let say nipping at his one leg and has a few open sores which I have covered to keep him from keeping this up.
I wonder if he getting some feeling back that might be causing this issue as well the other night while I was giving him a cleaning I thought I seen his tail moved the wife as well thought it had moved
I have faith that he will get back to his normal self again over time he was always been stubborn and would keep working at something until he got it ..
So I am sure he will be back to his old self .. But he is my BF and together well work towards this goal
I would like to thanks everyone on this forum what a great source of info. and support
I will keep everyone updated

Hi Arnold, I'm Sabrina. I am so sorry to hear that you and Dieter have to go through this, but he's so lucky to have someone like you to seek out help for him! Because Dieter is chewing on his leg, please call your vet asap. Some dogs have chewed off toes, feet, and worse because of nerve pain: Neuropathy - What You Need To Know - www.dodgerslist.com/literature/neuropathy.pdfSee "Licking and Chewing" - www.dodgerslist.com/literature/FridgeInfo81907.pdfNeurontin (generic: Gabapentin) is often prescribed for this nerve pain. You can read up on it here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/drugs.htm#paindrugsAlso, if you would answer a few more questions to help folks get a better understanding of Dieter's situation: -- What was the date you saw the vet and started 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7? -- Is there still currently pain - shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant/slow to move head or body, tight hard tummy? -- What are the exact names of meds currently given, their doses in mgs and frequencies? -- Currently can your dog wobbly walk? move the legs at all? or wag the tail when you do some happy talk? -- Do you find wet bedding or leaks on you when lifted up? -- Eating and drinking OK? -- Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood? You might already have seen these links, but I thought I'd add them because when my Charley was first diagnosed I had to read, re-read, and read some more! Shortcut through IVDD - www.dodgerslist.com/literature/IVDDcourse/index.html ^ This is a slide show so keep clicking "next" to view all the slides Overview: Healing during a disc episode - www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingpage.htmIndex to Overview: Phases of healing - www.dodgerslist.com/healingindex.htmYES, Your Dog CAN Have a Great Quality of Life! - www.dodgerslist.com/index/SDUNCANquality.htmAlso, Dodger's List has a great informational DVD available: www.dodgerslist.com/store/DVDorder.htm It's great not only for your own education, but to show to friends, family, and anyone else involved in Dieter's life. Please let us know how the vet plans on getting Dieter's nerve pain under control! ))Hugs!(( - Sabrina

Sorry all Have been busy...
-- What was the date you saw the vet and started 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7? Aug 24 /2013
well it was a few days later after reading on this forum That I have made a Crate to confine Dieter to bed rest he been good and has done well so far He has not been whining and does a lot of sleeping
-- After we gave him some Robaxin 1/4 of a pill every 8 hours afther 3 days he no longer in Pain so he not on these any longer
-- What are the exact names of meds currently given, their doses in mgs and frequencies?
– Prednisone/prednisolone not sure the amount @ this time ( at work) every 12 hour for the first 5 days and once a day for a week and now every second day until we run out as well with every dose I have been giving him this with every dose 5mg (famotidine)
-- @ this point no movement of legs and no Wagging of the tail as of yet.
-- Yes but the last few days I have noticed that he now waits until I get him out of his cage and then wets the floor and his poops out side the cage most of the time
-- Yes he eating very well and drinking
-- Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood?
As well the nipping @ his leg has stopped and they seems to be healing after wrapping them for a few nights and telling him to not to do so ..I think he understand what I was telling him
When I pick him up he licks my face like he knows we are working to get him back to normal
As well made him a rear leg collar using a old sheet and made two loops and taped him together and made it long enough to reach my shoulder and that leave my hands free to help him He did a poop outside and enjoyed the fresh air and sunshine our other dog seen him moving around and waslooking to play with him ( like they always have done before) I explained he was still not up to it yet
His Bladder is still not 100 % but i have notice he holding it longer and is will to wait to get outside to release
well that and update for now Looking forward to seeing his tail wag
and working on creating him a dog wheel chair so after his 8 weeks of cage rest he have something to help get around ...

Arnold, glad to hear famotidine is on board to protect the tummy. And more good news that the taper of prednisone is not showing any signs of pain… now Dieter can finish out healing his disc until graduation day. A wheelchair for an IVDD dog needs some attention special features. Take a look at this. www.dodgerslist.com/links/cart.htm You might want to wait til all 8 weeks of crate rest have been completed before getting started on the chair. Dieter could have a surprise for you… you just never know how long it takes for nerves to heal.. weeks or months. Please keep us posted more often on how you guys are doing as time permits.

Hi there! When you are tapering his steroid, that is the time to watch for signs of a return of pain. If pain returns, that means the steroid is not done battling the inflammation on the spine, and a longer course may be necessary. If you notice signs of pain returning (reluctance to move or eat, yelping, shivering/trembling, a tight-feeling tummy), then contact your vet. Is acupuncture and laser light therapy within your budget and available? If so, we highly recommend these complementary treatments. They both stimulate the nerves to heal and reduce inflammation. Acupuncture also induces a state of well-being. If you need a good calmer for him while he's crated, consider Composure Soft Chews. They are colostrum based and calm dogs as a mother's milk calms puppies. Once Dieter is off of his meds, you may want to think about purchasing a pet stroller. You could take him for rides on smooth surfaces in quiet areas. Dogs get a TON of mental stimulation out of stroller rides. I still use mine to this day, and my dog's IVDD surgery was almost 5 years ago! dodgerslist.com/literature/strollers.htm Keep up the great work with Dieter! Best wishes, ~Lisa

Arnlold, the good news is still no pain arising on the taper! Sounds like the taper will go without a hitch and all Dieter will need is to complete his 8 weeks. The focus with conservative treatment is getting the disc to heal during the 8 weeks. Sometimes nerves can heal during that time but many times owners need to think more in terms of months for nerve healing. Tickles between toes is a great exercise but only to be done after all 8 weeks. Right now the focus is not causing any undo movement of the back. Tickling will not likely tell you any valuable information, the neuro test has to be done a certain way and the observer must correctly identify what they see. Even many vets get this part of the neuro exam wrong as they do not have the practiced eye of a specialist. The one neuro function you can't make a mistake with is a tail wag due to your happy talk or seeing a treat. The very, very lightest least aggressive range of motion and leg massage is necessary for paralyzed legs during conservative treatment once Dieter is off all meds and pain free. The information highlighted in PINK pertains to a dog who can't walk. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/massagepassiveexercises.htmLove to hear that Dieter is happy, that and having his disc healed at the end of 8 weeks means he can get back to enjoying all the family activities he used to do before.

Glad to hear he is back to feeling his old self…. The taper seems to be going well, too…..great news! Oct 19 on graduation day will give you an opportunity for better assessing where his nerve healing is. Never hurts though to get a plan on the drawing board for a wheelchair, should you see he will need one in October. On graduation day you will want to also have a plan in mind for how he will be gradually introduced to physical activity again. This page is a good read to help you with your plan: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/AfterCrateRest.htm There are lots of other articles you will want to read under the "After Crate Rest then What?" column on the far right: www.dodgerslist.com/literature.htm#afterrest

Update
Well talked to vet and she suggested that he no longer requires any more drugs @ this point. Unless there was a pain was to return. So Dieter is now drug free for the last week there does not seem to be any pain and he still his happy self.
There still no tail wagging yet and his bladder control seems to still be improving I noticed his food intake has went down since he not on the drugs any longer he still has no movement in his back legs - and the other day when I thought he was moving his tail it was him just doing a poop.
But he getting more restless as time goes on ( which he been very good about no whining or barking) Unless someone comes to the door - the normal who is here bark ..
and when I was cleaning his cage the other day he was looking outside and could tell he wanted to go out and enjoy the sun.
We have another dog as well and when he outside she wants to play with him - which is sort a rough house type of dog playing that they have done since he was a puppy.
She too has missed her best buddy Dieter is as well whining when I say we are going for a car ride his head pops up right away and one can tell he wants to go for a ride so baddd.
I have to tell him that he can not come with me yet..
The plans for the doggie wheel chair are coming along and will try to major part of it during this long weekend - coming up here in Canada its thanksgiving here.
Looks like I be going with a homemade version that will be using PVC pipe (3/4 ") for the main body and foam filled aircraft landing tires 4" and axles (light and durable and cost was reasonable priced).
So that leaves but the rear leg support and the front harness to be added to complete the wheel chair I am sure he'll be happy to get around a bit more then just the hand made rear leg harness I been using for him to go to the bathroom with.
He moves quite well around using this but there still the issue of around the inside of the house as he try to drag him self around the floor which is hardwood and not much here for grip.
I will have to create him a bag to help him out in this area (easier for him to move around and one can add a diaper to catch any mis-happs while he moves around
But @ this point he just happy to be out of the cage and sits there or lays down with out much movement when I am cleaning his cage area.
I have to say when this first happened I was not sure if I could do everything that was going to be required but together Dieter has been very good and understanding and as we working on a plan that would work for the both of us.
He now gives me a grunt to let me know he has to go outside or do his thing.. with a good boy he trys to please me..
Well still waiting to see his tail wag again.
Everyone keep the faith and working together you and your dog can accomplish goals together and has help builder a stronger bond for both me and to my Dieter
Everyone have a great long weekend
Arnold and Dieter

Wonderful news off all meds and pain free. Now all that remains is to finished out 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 to let the disc finish forming some good secure scar tissue. You might try htis type of upside down cape idea so after crate rest Dieter can scoot about the house and not cause any skin abrasions. At the bottom you will see a link to Dachshund Delights if you want to buy one ready made. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/incontinentdown/Olliecape.pdfHappy thanksgiving… do let us see a photo of your cart!

Hi Arnold! Great news that Dieter is off of all meds and pain free! Dieter hasn't reached his 8wk 100% Strict crate rest graduation date yet (Oct 19). I know it's hard near the end, but Dieter still needs to be in his crate full time (except to be carried out for potty breaks). Even though he wants to drag himself around the house, he still needs to be restricted to his crate so that his body can develop secure scar tissue to protect his healing disc: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingdisc.htmHang in there with the 100% crate rest - you are so close! You and Dieter can make it to the 19th! Can Dieter pass the "sniff and pee" test of bladder control? (Can he sniff an old pee spot, and then pee?) ))Hugs!(( - Sabrina

Update Well put to get the Dog wheel chair of the thanksgiving weekend here in Canada and test fitting Dieter this weekend that just passed The cost was about 50.00 bucks which including everything that I required to make him a wheel chair PVC pipe and connectors around $20.00 and Tires/axles $25.00 and Harness from the local dollar store here $ 5 So using a measuring chart from this site I cut the PVC pipe pieces and glued them together making it 1" wider this his widest point and a few inches longer then I measured ( it easy to cut off then to add back on) I made a rear leg holder by using a piece's of old bed sheets (2) and rolling 18" (long) and 12" (wide) twist the pieces and then wrapped them in soft tape and using metal screws attached then to wheelchair Creating a figure 8 ( just bend them into and half arc and then jointed them in the center with tape at the center of each and attaching the ends to wheelchair centering the figure 8 so it was right over top of the rear wheels. As well had some stretchy materiel that I connected to the wheel chair just and 1" in front of the figure 8 rear leg holder Then I attached a nylon strap with a quick connector at the front that goes over Dieter front leg/shoulder area. Then the Big test was to get him in it and get him to walk with it .. He been on crate rest for the lest 8 weeks and has put some extra weight and has not done much walking of any type other then going to the bathroom well he was just standing there and would not move we have another dog ( his walk buddy) and I bought her out saying we are going for a walk .. After a few trys and some coasting we got Dieter to walk slowly but he moving under his own power and he went over to his old spots to have a sniff We all walked around the building and yes he followed slow and steady. As we came around the front there was another dog walking down the sidewalk - well he started barking and starting walking /running faster lol there was some paved walk ways that he had some issues getting over - but he did make it .. I praised him for beening a good boy and gave him a treat brought him in the house and he had a drink of water and he was spent I put him back in this cage and we was resting and in a a deep sleep and had a a great evening rest This morning he was sleep on this back all 4 legs pointing up.. Will be taking him out for a ten to 15 min walk everyday building to longer times as well will be working on pouch so he can cruise around the floor in our home Remember to block any stair areas so there are no issues .. I will add some pictures of wheel chair and Dieter in use .. There no tail wagging but he did give me kisses when I picked him up so I am guessing he happy with his new found freedom and movement .. Everyone have a great week Arnold and Dieter

Dear Arnold, I'm so glad that Dieter did so well with his first wheel chair walk! Some dogs take quite awhile to adjust to it but Dieter has taken to it quickly. I'm sure he's very happy to get out of the crate and out into the big, wide world once again! Congratulations on going the full 8 weeks of crate rest. You've done a great job with Dieter and it shows! Just take it nice and slow. Dieter has been lying in a crate for 8 weeks and his muscles are very weak. Those muscles and his stamina need to be gradually built up again. He really shouldn't be running yet, not for a couple of weeks. Here's some more info on that with a suggested schedule: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/AfterCrateRest.htmAgain, congratulations! Prayers for continued wellbeing for little Dieter.

Update I located a long time person who had the same issues as my Dieter and gave me some advise that I thought might be of use to others as well...
The best wheels for the chair are for R/C planes (Sullivan Skylites). Very light and easy rolling." Hmm was thinking of trying flaxseed oil any thoughts on this? As for Dieter he enjoying his new freedom with his wheelchair we have gone out everyday and get some walking in - along with some adjustments wider rear leg holders and adjusted the over all length so it fits him just right. Changed the strapping @ the front of the wheel chair as he does not care for anything that under his chest and near his front legs - I guess it bothers his walking! Oh yeah some pictures to come - hope to add them later today Arnold the human - Dieter the dog

This is what Dodgerslist's webpage says about Omega 3 and Flaxseed Oil, Dieter: Omega-3 derived from cold-water fish such as sardines and anchovies among others, is a wonderful source of two fatty acids crucial to health: DHA and EPA which are also anti-inflammatory. Using Flaxseeds/Flaxseed oil is not the best source of Omega 3 for dogs because the dog cannot directly use the ALA in flaxseed and must convert the ALA to DHA and EPA that the dog can use. Many dogs cannot make the conversion effectively. Supplementing with Salmon Oil can lead to too much Vitamin A and D which can cause liver and kidney problems. Instead of using fish oil supplements, simply feeding one water packed sardine a day will provide the dog not only with those beneficial anti-inflammatory Omega-3 oils, but will also provide good protein. If you decide to supplement with fish oil capsules rather than a sardine a day, If supplementing with Fish Oil Capsules, stop supplementing one week prior to surgery. Consuming high doses may lead to clotting problems and deficiencies of Vitamin E. Here is more information on supplements: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Supplements.htm

Congratuations on graduation for Arnold. Arnold, have you seen any happy tail wagging, any movement of the legs. All wheelchairs have the potential to tip over, so that is good advice to only have them in the carts where you are there to supervise. And only for about 2 hours at a time…Dieter will let you know when he wants out. Look forward to see some pictures. Can you upload them to the Gallery… directions here: dodgerslist.boards.net/thread/260/upload-photo-dog

Here is Dieter in his wheel chair Here how I connected the wheels to his wheel chair At this point he still has no tail wagging - but enjoys going out side and checking over everything he goes for a while then a break and does this over and over .. I have noticed that everyday he getting better at going longer ( must have been the 8 weeks crate rest) he usually starts with going to the bathroom and were off I have him on a leash as he can take off in a few seconds and can move around really well still has issues with curbs and hooking the tires around things - just will take some time to get use to that so far the wheels and axles seem to be holding up Still waiting for some leg movement and now will start working his legs everyday with the hope that he get some movement back will keep updating Arnold the Human Dieter the Dog

Arnold, glad that Dieter is back to doing yard checks with his new chair? The reason for the leg PT is to keep the joints from freezing up and circulation up in the muscles…. in preparation for when leg function returns. Good PT article to read over: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/massagepassiveexercises.htm

Still having and issue with front harness but other then that the cost was around 50.00 in total wheels, axles, axles locks, pvc pipe and a few connectors - went to the dollar store for nylon straps and made the rear leg holder out of cloth and wrapped with soft tape. Made two pieces bend them like a large C and then joined them together in the middle ( 1 and 1/2 inche area)with some tape and them attached the ends using metal screws 1/2 to 3/4 inch in length which dug into pvc pipe - which some trail and error I found the right balance and just a strap over the front with velcro ( found @ dollar store)for quick adjustment - plus a ring for the leash - dang dog takes off in a split second lol as well helps to guide him up and over things and where we are going .. For those that would like a word document on how I did this just leave me a message and will be happy to provide detail pictures and details to create one themselves at a low cost Tools required a drill . something to cut pipe ( hack saw or hand saw) and some used ( old) pant legs from one of my sweat pants some metal screws to attach stuff. Measuring tape and your set.. and a few tools to attach the wheels and tighten the bolts Have a great weekend Arnold the human and Dieter the dog PS: he gets so excited now when I say its time for a walk
