[Original subject line: 5 year old Yorkie with IVDD] Hello, My 5 year old yorkie was just diagnosed with IVDD [5/24] 4 days ago. He was immediately started on Gabapentin (every 12 hours) and started Meloxicam [5/28] today (1.5mg once per day). [MED LIST/HISTORY- Moderator's Note. Please do not edit weight 5 y.o. crate rest 5/24 Meloxicam as of 5/28: 1.5mgs 1x/day for ? days, then test STOP: _pain/_neuro gabapentin ?mg 2x/day
Axi needs GI tract protector, Pepcid AC, on board w/Meloxicam! He is able to walk but is in significant pain. He’s on strict crate rest for the next 6 weeks and it’s been a challenge since he’s not accustomed to being in his crate. He’s an anxious dog in general and being in his crate has caused even more anxiety. I’ve tried so many things to help him calm down but nothing seems to be working. Even though he is in the smallest crate possible, he keeps trying to climb the sides, constantly panting, and doesn’t stop moving to the point that he hurts himself and starts yelping. I’m looking for tips from anyone who has experienced this with their dog. I’m desperate for his sake and mine, especially as he is not getting enough sleep. Thank you!

Welcome! My name is Paula, what's yours? My comments are of a general nature until we know more about your Axi, with your answers to the questions at the end of this post. Details with dates always gives us accurate info to understand your dog's situation. for RIGHT NOW.... YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY to address the very soonest. 1) Pain meds are not correctly adjusted. Typically is will take an prescription written for dosing every 8 hrs (3x/day) AND there will be a med for each of the 3 kinds of pain. -- traMADol-general analgesic -- methocarbamol- muscle spasm pain -- gabapentin-nerve pain
Adjusting meds by phone avoids a risky-to-the disc car transport. Describe the pain that you're seeing. When that pain occurs (when having to move, nearing next dose of meds) SIGNS OF PAIN: ⚙︎ shivering-trembling ⚙︎ yelping when picked up or moved ⚙︎ tight tense tummy ⚙︎ arched back, ears pinned bac ⚙︎ restless, can't find a comfortable position ⚙︎ slow or reluctant to move in suite such as shift positions ⚙︎ not their normal perky interested in life selves ➕if a neck disc: ◻︎ head held high/ nose to the ground ◻︎ looks up with just eyes and does not move head and neck easily. ◻︎ not eating due to painful chewing or in too much overall pain ◻︎ holds front or back leg up flamingo style not wanting to bear weight There should be no sign of pain from one dose of meds to the next. Have no patience with pain as it does hinder healing. Look for your dog to be acting their normal, perky self when pain is fully under control round the clock. Correct Rx for pain meds will have pain in control in 1 hour and stay in control right up to the next dose of pain meds.
2) Stomach protection: Advocate for the three pain meds 3x/day plus a stomach protector such as Pepcid AC (Famotidine) to protect against the side effects of the anti-inflammatory, Meloxicam. Know why stomach protection is important: dodgerslist.com/2020/05/06/stomach-protection3) EMERGENCY CRATE TRAINING dodgerslist.com/2020/02/24/tips-to-help-with-recovery-suite/Recovery suite size and Potty time The restricted area (ex-pen, crate, etc.) should be approximately enough room to stand up, turn around, and when lying down fully stretch out the legs. The dog must stay in the STRICT rest 24/7 to protect the spinal cord. Carry to and from potty place. You stand in one spot. Allow your dog to only take minimal steps with harness and a 6′ leash. Complete details on how to implement crate rest and lots of helpful tips to make the process go smoother. Includes section on "Calmers •Music • No Jumping" : dodgerslist.com/2020/05/14/strict-rest-recovery-process/ QUESTIONSPlease tell us about your dog. Answer the questions below. With your details of event dates, etc., we'd know best how to help. We'd feel awfully bad to mistakenly assume anything ... delaying help for your dog.
What country are you in?★1 List any current signs of pain you observe. There should be no sign of pain from one dose of meds to the next. Have no patience with pain as it does hinder healing. Tell your vet about any of these observations asap to get meds adjusted. ⚙︎ shivering-trembling ⚙︎ yelping when picked up or moved ⚙︎ tight tense tummy ⚙︎ arched back, ears pinned back ⚙︎ restless, can't find a comfortable position ⚙︎ slow or reluctant to move in suite such as shift positions ⚙︎ not their normal perky interested in life selves ➕if a neck disc: ◻︎ head held high/ nose to the ground ◻︎ looks up with just eyes and does not move head and neck easily. ◻︎ not eating due to painful chewing or in too much overall pain ◻︎ holds front or back leg up flamingo style not wanting to bear weight ★2 __How much does your dog weigh? What is the list of meds your dog is taking? Meloxicam as of 5/28: 1.5mgs 1x/day for ? days, then test STOP: _pain/_neuro gabapentin ?mg ea dose? 2x/day Pepcid AC (famotidine) ?mg 2x/day -- Please include the "all important" stomach protector. Use Pepcid AC with any anti-inflammatory med (steroid or NSAID). Follow vets who are proactive. Avoid red flag signs: Not eating, vomit, loose stool, bleeding ulcers, red or black blood in diarrhea. The usual dose of Pepcid AC (famotidine) for dogs is 0.44mg per pound. www.1800petmeds.com/Famotidine-prod11171.html--Give 30 mins before the anti-inflammatory.--Dose thereafter every 12 hours for the duration of the anti-inflammatory. ★3 Your name? ★4 Did you specifically get a diagnosis of IVDD, aka: a disc problem, a disc herniation, a bulging disc, slipped disc? -- Where did the vet say the disc was: in the neck or the back? -- Is the vet a general DVM? or -- a specialist surgeon (ACVIM neurology or ACVS ortho)?
-- Why was the anti-inflammatory Meloxicam not started until 5/28? ★5 Why was only one pain med (gabapentin) Rx'd on 5/24 for a disc episode? If your dog moves around too much, the disc cannot heal. With correct combo of pain medications to mask pain, dogs will not be in pain and want to be more active. So it will be up to you to restrict your dog’s activity for them. i.postimg.cc/3rLH7g7X/320still-healing-disc.jpg ** Let us know you are on board with eight (8) weeks of STRICT to heal the disc: - no laps - no couches - no baths - no sleeping with you - no chiro therapy - no meandering at potty times.POTTY TIMES Carry to and from the recovery suite to the potty place and then allow a very few limited footsteps. Using a sling (long winter scarf, ace bandage, belt) will save your back and help to keep a wobbly dog's back aligned and butt from tipping over. A harness and 6 foot leash is to control speed and keep footsteps to minimum as you stand in one spot. An ex-pen in the grass is an excellent alternative to minimizing footsteps with the physical and visual to indicate there will be no sniff festing going on! dodgerslist.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Potty-leash-harness400-19kb.jpg **★6 List any red flag signs of stomach damage you are currently observing: Not eating, vomit, loose stool, bleeding ulcers, red or black blood in diarrhea?★7 Currently, can your dog.... -- wobbly walk? -- Move the legs at all? -- Wag the tail when you specifically do some happy talk?
