Hello my name is susan and i have a chiweenie who will be four yrs old in just ten days..early this smorning i felt her curl up to me and next thing i know she was as stiff as a board and not using her back legs. I got so scared i wrapped her in a blanket woke my niece up and drove her to the emergency vet that was closest to me. They came back in the room to tell me akira has IVDD. The vet explained that she will need complete strict 8 week crate rest and she takes anti inflammatory, pain and muscle relaxer medicines for the next few days. I had to help her do a bowel movement but she refuses to drink any water now she eats perfectly fine though. I still cannot believe this happened due to earlier in the day she was running around and playing and then boom she was like this. I have been hearing to do chiropractic therapy on her and water therapy but reading further into it i seen that wasnt good but its ok for acupuncture. I am at loss for im one of the plenty who cannot afford the surgery which is 2 states away from me so i am sticking to the method of strict crate therapy and the problem is when they showed me how to help her with peeing i tried at home and she started like she was on her period but few small drops of blood and i know she just got over hers. I was planning on getting her fixed but the money i had back for it went to helping her tonight. She tries to keep her head up but her head wobbles like a bobble head doll and she is so swollen i want to cry for her. I have been all morning since i found out my rambunctious dog is down and out and i don know if she will recover. Vet said if she still feels pain its a good sign she hasnt lost all the feeling but he next few hours are crucial so i am refusing o sleep il i know she will be fine she is all i have. Is here any other options i can do o get her to drink water ive tried a baby bottle and dripping drops on her tongue but she has no desire and i dont know if it is from all the meds she is on but i dont want to add dehydration to he list as it is. I never knew about this disease till tonight when the vet explained it and also has doxies. Im praying she can walk somehow again and with her being on crate rest for 8 weeks and acupuncture and massages is there anything else i can try to help her along? i do know she will never jump on anything after this ever again if she is able to walk again.i miss my bed partner already..any advice?

Susan, welcome to Dodgerslist! I do know this is a very scary thing that has happened to Akira. But you know what really can help you and big time will help Akira... it is your being committed to read/study/absorbe. If you don't know the enemy, you are not likely to have a battle plan. So do start with this page to get a very good overview and then follow the link to read the rest of the Disc disease 101 article. Doing that will get you up to speed very quickly. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingpage.htmPlease give us the exact names of all meds, the dose in mg and the frequency you give them. Not drinking water can well be a sign of problem from the anti-inflammatory. There is no stomach protector on board. Please do not delay get Pepcid AC (famotidine) on board asap today and keep the vet in the loop in the morning. Serious gastrointestinal toxicity such as bleeding, ulceration, and perforation, can occur at any time, with or without warning symptoms. Phrase the question to your vet this particular way:" Is there a medical/health reason for my dog not to take Pepcid?" If there is no reason, we follow vets who are proactive in stomach protection by giving doxies 5mg Pepcid (famotidine) 30 minutes before the NSAID. Pepcid is generally considered a safe-over-the-counter suppressor of stomach acid production for a healthy dog and good insurance. Dogs don't speak up at first signs of trouble like a person would. By the time we notice black or red blood in the stools, things can quickly go from bleeding ulcers to a life threatening perforated stomach. We ask that all members read about each med their dog is on or may take as a safety measure. If you have a question about anything you read, let's talk! This directory is in alpha order: www.marvistavet.com/html/pharmacy_center.htmI think Akira has a disc problem in her neck. Did the vet tell you that? Here are the extra things to do to be more helpful. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/cervical.htmTry some warmed no fat/lo salt broth to entice her to take fluids. Make sure you are soaking each kibble meal in equal amount of broth or water to help get fluids in her. Needed water in take is a combo of actually lapping up water and the water contained in food. Is she staying dry in between expressing? Are you expressing every 3-4 hours? How often depends on her meds...so we look forward to that information. Where exactly is she swollen? I would have the vet check that she does not already have a bladder infection causing blood in her urine. A urinalysis run in the vet's office can tell if bacteria are present and in raging number to cause the red urine. Have you seen the video on expressing: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htmMake sure you do ONLY the range of motion and massage highlighted in PINK and red numbered ones: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/massagepassiveexercises.htmDo know there is no critical few hours. Healing and recovery will be a matter of weeks, months. It IS in the cards for Akira to get back to enjoying life again. Hang in there, give Akira a kiss and tell her she will be just fine, because she will!!!

Well its been two weeks since i was last on here and reading so many of these threads had made me cry seeing i wasnt alone in what i was going through..Akira was diagnosed with IVDD two weeks ago and has been on strict crate rest and carpomel, tramadol and metho something sorry not looking at bottles. She is to take the carpomel twice a day and the tramadol and metho one every 6 to 8 hrs i have been doing every 6 hrs. She refuses to take it and i have been getting creative with ideas she doesnt like it in treats or pill pockets or even crushed up in food shes a smart lil dog. But just as an update she was doing pretty bad a few days ago stiffening and breathing funny and not sleeping im taking it that the pills needed its time to kick into gear. My bday was the twenty first of march and i was at work crying all night i was scared to leave her side in case something happened bad to her. So when midnight came around i prayed to god a million times all night i kept repeating it over and over again begging for him to make her better and used my bday wish to heal her. I never was one to believe that praying worked or even wishes but when i came home from work that night she was as loving and playful as ever she showed no signs of pain due to the medicines working on her. The other night i got a call at work and feared the worst but my family reassured me she was fine..she had actually found out how to unzipper the crate from the inside and scooted clear out to the living room and plopped down on the floor and watched tv, my family afraid to move her let her there for awhile and then grabbed her crate and she willingly scooted in. On saturday the 23rd i had my ex husband over and she got so excited to see him she moved her tail and i had felt like my praying mustve been heard but i hadnt gotten my hopes up. Tonight when i got home early from work she was whimpering and i thought she was in pain or something but she scooted to the front of the crate just to nuzzle her face against me and was wagging her tail two to three times in a row. She still hasnt really moved her legs that much but every now and then when she relaxes she moves them slightly ad thats after i massage them and work on them to help keep the muscle built up and when she had enough she will jerk them back from me and curl her toes if tickled. Im hoping maybe someone did hear my prayers and the i called the vet due to they wanted an update on her and they told me her moving her tail is a great sign that the crate and medication is working. She is now trying to play with her squeaky toy but i wont let it in the crate with her due to i dont want her moving to much and when she gets excited with it i dont want her to injure herself more. I still dont want to get my hopes up now but im so excited she can still feel those areas when the first vet said she would never be able to. Now im scared to lift her so i make sure i slide her out on pee pad to go seeing she refuses to go outside when its cold anyways and i dont want her tensing up either and strain herself but when she goes pee she feels it though its all the time here of late and everywhere also and when she goes poo she looks back and tries to remove it. I do hope however that her next vet appointment this coming week will bring some good news to us. Reading things on here everyone has been doing ive done them all in hopes she will regain some strength. But things can also turn for the worst so still praying everynight. She hates being in the crate and tries to escape when possible but she has 6 more weeks in there to rest and then that vet visit ill know much much more. Thank you to all those whom have posted ways to make them comfortable and the massage techniques due to those she is willingly moving areas i thought she never would again. After her next vet appt ill try to repost to this one on how she is doing and i hope everyone who is going through this knows that their advice and stories go along way. blessings to you all.

Susan, most dogs prefer a recovery suite that has more visibility such as a wire crate or an expen. So that might be something to look for use til graduation day on May 12. We have had other dogs figure out how to unzip.... we always have to be one step of ahead of them.... what a challenge that is. LOL. I hope with that escape no increased damage to the disc happened... evidenced by increased pain, worsening neuro functions. Susan can you give us the correct name for the Carpomel Are you really giving methocarbamol every 6 hours? or is it just the Tramadol every 6 hours? How much does Akira weigh?
Tramadol is an extremely bitter pill. So hide it well, as once Akira get a taste she will be very suspicious. Do not crush her meds into her food, because then you won't know if she got all her meds if she doesn't finish all the food. A piece of banana or microwaved and mashed sweet potato are good for pill giving. The pills won't slip out. You can wrap with a small piece of deli meat as incentive to take the pill laden banana, etc. Keep the hope and share your positive feelings to Akira...she need to know things will be ok and that being in the recovery suite is expected and a good thing from you. Please avoid doing any tickles to her feet. Again ONLY the information highlighted in PINK and with red numbers are the only PT you should be doing: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/massagepassiveexercises.htmDoes Akira stay dry inbetween expressing sessions? Now that she can wag her tail the next neuro function will be bladder control. Periodically take her outdoors to sniff an old pee spot. See if she will sniff and then release urine. If not then express her bladder as usual. Nerves heal typically in the reverse order of the damage to the spinal cord: 1. Deep Pain Sensation (Only correctly identified by a specialist.) 2. ---> Tail wagging with joy at seeing you or getting a treat or meal. 3. Bladder and bowel control verified with the "sniff and pee" test. 4. Leg Movement, and then ability to move up into a standing position, and then wobbly walking. 5. Being able to walk with more steadiness and properly place the feet. 6. Ability to walk unassisted and perhaps even run. Let us know how the vet visit goes this week.

Sorry it has been awhile was out of state for funeral proceedings for a family member. Updating on akira she is off of the methocarbamol and still on the carprofen and tramadol and her next vet appointment we will see if she needs off either one of those. Sadly she has still no hold over her bladder and goes basically all the time. She has been drinking water and eating like a horse and since off the muscle relaxers she has feeling if i even go to touch her back legs they jump and she draws them back. As for walking still no sign, however she does sit comfortably up on her rear end and tries to move them she is moving her tail more and more and ive been massaging the right techniques and trying to keeps the muscles strong. Her back end has lost alot of weight to it but slowly gaining it back. She is only out of crate for cleanings of the crate itself which went from once a week to two a day and her bath so she doesnt get an urinary tract infection. Vet said that is normal so we will see on that. She seems not so bothered however she does not like me touching her hind legs and nudges me away when trying to move them but not in a pain sense. Hopefully her next vet appointment will let me know her progress seeing her being in that crate on may 18th will be her 8 weeks.

Hi Susan, Thank you for the update. I am sorry to hear about the funeral and send my sympathy. It sounds to me like Akira has no bladder control. She isn't just peeing, she is overflowing which is very damaging to her bladder because it loses tone and then she could become permanently unable to control her bladder. Please go to the Vet and have a hands on lesson on how to express as Paula mentioned to you a month ago. It would have saved you a ton of clean up every single day this month. It's a skill that takes practice but once you know how, it's not so hard and certainly much easier than cleaning up that mess twice a day.. She would need to be expressed every 3 to 4 hours. Here are some helpful videos with tips on expressing both urine and poop: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htmHow much does Akira weigh and what are the dosages and frequencies of her current medications?

Susan, I agree with Pauliana, about the need to manually express Akira's bladder. Baths are a real danger for Akira. Try to avoid and use non-scented baby wipes or a damp washcloth until your skills have reached the needed proficiency to keep her dry. If Akira has been overflowing urine for several days now, she likely already has a serious bladder infection going on. When is the last time you brought in a urine sample to screen for infection…a urinalysis? There is only one way to keep UTIs away and that is expressing often enough and fully at each session so that Akira is staying dry between sessions. An overflowing bladder is what causes UTI. As reflexes can allow some urine to escape but reflexes can't void all the urine. What remains in the bladder quickly becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. Keeping the skin free of urine with baby wipes or a damp washcloth is to avoid urine scalds/burns. Have you gone back to your vet or another and had a refresher on how to express? We all have learned by extra lessons. Express right there in the clinic and have the vet tech check your work. Do give us the details on your expressing schedule.. how often, can you recognize and feel the shape of her bladder with your fingers? I'm concerned about the drinking like a horse. This is one of the signals of taking a NSAID that is RED flag and reason to stop this med at once. This is from the Rimadyl (aka Carprofen) web page: "Important Safety Information: RIMADYL is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication available only by prescription through your veterinarian. As with other NSAID-class medications, signs of RIMADYL intolerance may include appetite loss, vomiting and diarrhea, which could indicate side effects involving the digestive tract, liver or kidneys. Some of these side effects may occur without warning and, in rare situations may be serious, resulting in hospitalization or even death. If these signs occur, discontinue RIMADYL therapy and consult your veterinarian." www.rimadyl.com/default.aspx
From the FDA snipurl.com/2348157 : Common side effects seen with the use of NSAIDs in dogs may affect the kidneys, liver, and gastrointestinal tract and may include: Not eating or eating less Lethargy, depression, changes in behavior Vomiting Diarrhea, black tarry-colored stool Yellowing of gums, skin, or the whites of the eyes Change in drinkingChanges in skin (scabs, redness, or scratching) What to do? If you suspect a possible side effect to an NSAID, STOP giving the drug to your dog and call your veterinarian immediately!

I haven't been on in awhile been spending mode time working with akira. A little background she was diagnosed with ivdd march 17th 2013 eleven days before her 4th birthday. Vet said we had no hope she would walk again so I didn't give up and got 2nd opinion. The next vet told me about 8 weeks strict crate rest and meds so we put her on muscle relaxers..pain management meds and anti inflammatory meds. About 6 weeks in the vet removed her from her meds and I feared the worst. I was moving and let my ex husband take care of her for the remaining two weeks and he let her out and about and though she wasn't swollen or in pain anymore he did the worst the vet said so I took her back immediately and vet had me start all over with the crate rest again no meds. Akira hated being confined and I felt like a horrible mother BUT it was the best thing that I could've done..why? Some may ask because she just got off her crate rest and her first day out and about she got up on her own on her hind legs. Though they were crossed and wobbly due to losing the muscle she once had we've been working on it. Vet gave me approval for massages and water therapy which she loves for her sorw muscles in front legs. She still scoots around but not in pain and I came home tonight to even greater news and seen for myself. Her first vet said she'd never walk..wag her tail in excitement or even get self movement..and I'm still crying because I walked in from work she tried to walk to me and was up on all fours for a minute then dropped and she was wagging her tail on her own when she greeted me. I called her vet immediatelyand explained what all was happening she gave me the hope iI didn't have for my little girl. With the therapy and massages and working her legs akira now has self movement in her hind legs. She moves them on her own and has regained full bladder control. Though she still has her lil moments of peeing when she is excited but she's done that since forever. I know she isn't clear yet but she isn't given up and neither will I! I may be getting my hopes up but with her moving her hind legs on her own and bladder control and wagging tail and getting up on them..I need the hope not just for me but for her as well. I will continue the vets orders and the schedule were on because it works. She hates the crate now growls at it and prefers her blankets to be gathered up beside the bed and curl into a restful ball. She is now very active and I guess her seeing the other dog keeps her reminded she can walk again!

What a wonderful story, Susan! Thank you so much for sharing it with us. You've done a truly great job with Akira and you and she are reaping the rewards. Good for you on getting that second opinion. This story will be very encouraging to other IVDD dog owners and shows how we can never give up on our dogs. Nerve damage can take a very long time to heal. I know my Jeremy was still showing improvements a year after he first went down with IVDD. Prayers for continued improvements for Akira.

Susan, thank you for such a wonderful report on Akira's recovery. Your story is especially important as it debunks those who say they can predict if a dog will walk again, shows how important STRICT rest for 8 weeks is …as that is the only way a disc heals… time and limited movement. A 2nd opinion vet is important when you are not getting good support…there are IVDD knowledgeable vets out there, we just have to look for them. Are you following a slow and incremental re-introduction back into physical activity. There is a schedule here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/AfterCrateRest.htmWhat PT are you doing with Akira, sling walking? Here are some ideas…water therapy at home www.dodgerslist.com/literature/watertherapy.htm Some good ideas to make your home IVDD friendly: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/protectback.htmNew members are often looking for a vet who understand disc disease and how to treat a disc episode. Would you consider sharing your vet's information in our directory: dodgerslist.boards.net/board/10/guidelines-posting
