[Original subject line:Bruno - Conservative / Crate / NSAID / Pain Management ]
Bruno is a 1.5 years old 14lbs (long) mini dachshund. I've dealt with extensive IVDD in the past with Newman but it was still surprising to have a back episode at 1.5 years. I have a sunken living room (8-10" drop) but have a custom ramp include a custom ramp to get on the couch and down the couch. And, sometimes he uses them and sometimes he doesn't.
A few days ago, we were outside playing fetch and the hard rubber ball hit him in the nose. He stopped playing and I didn't think too much of it -- Maybe it's related? The timeline is fuzzy but 1 or 2 days later he started to slow down, breath harder, and had the shakes. He walked perfectly fine. No wobbly at all. He yelped a few times when we picked him up or when I pushed on his chest to move him back off my lap (spine compression?).
I went to [12/23] Vet ER last night around 11PM and they noticed some mild discomfort when they pushed on the middle of the back. The doctor said it was too soon to assume it is IVDD and it could just be an over exertion or something of that nature. He recommended crate rest for 3 weeks, NSAIDs (Carprofen), pain meds (Gabapentin), and sedative to slow him down.
My primary vet who has an IVDD dachshund as well agrees and says to worry if it comes back in 1-2 years. Today he spent most of the time in his crate but he appears 100% normal. He eats/drinks, chews his bone, and wants to play. I am going to keep with the crate rest/meds but my obvious concern is long term. My plan is to get an in-home trainer to teach him to use ramps.

Shawn, sure hope it is not IVDD. My one year old lost use of legs and had a surgery. With IVDD the discs already start to prematurely age at 1 year old. However, it is much more normal (if a dog was born with IVDD) that the vet and owner will first know in the range of 4-7 years old with the first signs of pain. With the carprofen on board, do get Pepcid AC on board (5mgs 2x/day) to suppress the extra acids. READ MORE dodgerslist.com/2020/05/06/stomach-protection Dogs do not speak up at first signs like a person would, so best to be proactive in stomach protection.

I kept Bruno very quiet on Christmas. My daughter bumped into him and he yelp and he yelped while holding his head to give him the pain meds. I an not sure if it was him compressing his back or he if he has pain in his back -- I am trying to explain the sudden change after he was hit in face from the ball even though the doctor said it's his back.
He hasn't had a pain med in 24 hours and is 100% completely normal. I am trying to keep him calm but he had decided to run as fast as possible around the kitchen/living room and do a few laps until I was able to stop him. Back is completely flat. He is 100% normal. So, IVDD? I am not sure. I am still going to keep him quiet and continue with NSAIDs. I am really hoping it is isolated and maybe just had a small injury. He was always a wimp too.

Shawn, the best is to follow the vet's instruction about STRICT rest. Observe.
So STRICT rest means -- eating in the recovery suite. -- Only out of suite when you carry him to and from the potty place. A leash, harness are for you to control his speed and from darting off. Stand in one spot and Bruno is restrict to very, very limited footsteps to take care of business. When at potty time or other necessary times out of the suite for pilling, make sure no other pets or kids are around to distract you and Bruno.
You stopped the anti-inflammatory carprofen and the pain med gabapentin? Please update us on these meds: Carprofen as of 12/24: 12.5 mgs 2x/day for ? days then date stopped gabapentin 50mg/mL: mgs (1.2 mL dose) 2x/day traZODone 50 mgs 2x/xay to relax and "slow" Bruno down needs GI tract protector, Pepcid AC, on board w/Carprofen!
No matter where a suspicion of a disc problem might be (neck or back) both locations are treated with STRICT rest. Rest is to to avoid with a suspicion of might be, that the disc receives no more impact when the neck or the back move with walking, etc. movement.
I surely hope strict rest proves (with your observation), to enable your vet to decide pain is due to the impact to Bruno's face and just some sore muscles. Right now no one knows. Your sticking to STRICT rest and observing will give your vet the kind of feedback to rule out a disc episode (IVDD).

Bruno is doing well. He is acting 100% normal so we stopped the Gabapentin

but we are keeping him quiet and giving him the other meds. We got him a new bed and blanket and he loves to sit by the fireplace and cook.

I am happy to hear that Bruno is doing well and there is no longer a need for gabapentin.
Is Bruno continuing strict crate rest for IVDD or has the vet been able to rule out a disc episode?

Apologies for the delay. I don’t get emails that threads are updated. The vet doesn’t seem to think it was related but more due to the ball.
[MED LIST/HISTORY- Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 14lbs 1.5 years old 12/24 ball hit on nose. Vet thinks not disc episode. date? another small episode, ER ex'd NSAID Carprofen as of 12/24: 12.5 mgs 2x/day for ? days gabapentin 50mg/mL: mgs (1.2 mL dose) 2x/day traZODone 50 mgs 2x/xay needs GI tract protector, Pepcid AC, on board w/Carprofen! ]
A few months ago [date?] he had another small episode where he would whimper and want to be held. No back indication but I didn’t want to take a risk so I brought him to urgent care and got the work up. The vet doesn’t think it was his back but gave him nsaid, a very mild and he was 100% back to normal within hours and no issues since. I’m overly worried based on my previous ivdd issues so I don’t take chances. All is good so far and Bruno turns 3 in a few months.

Shawn, be careful. You have reported another (2nd) suspicion of a disc episode (date of?) without any details for us to know about. Often an owner can't relate a disc episode to a specific activity. It could be as simple as turning back too sharply to scratch an ear. When a disc has prematurely aged enough when born with IVDD, a disc problem (episode) could happen. Thus good to have a understanding of IVDD to be prepared should Bruno display the signs of a disc episode of pain/neuro diminishment. ** This is a very good, brief intro worth your while to look at: Shortcut Thru IVDD: dodgerslist.com/2020/06/26/time-and-ivdd/ Directions for bookmarking a thread to receive an email alert when someone has replied are below.
