I adopted Dusty three months ago so I'm unsure as to what test he needs to have during his annual physical. One thing is should he have a CT done yearly to make sure he is not having any problems related to his injury? His injury happened back in January of this year when a little girl was running and then tripped and fell on top of Dusty's back causing severe spinal injury. Thank You
No surgery was done. Laser & water therapy is what I was told by adoption agency. Uses Eddies Wheels

Welcome to Dodgerslist. My name is Paula what is yours? Thank you for adopting Dusty and giving him a good home. Advanced imaging such as CT, MRI's are reserved for planning a surgery most often. All procedures which require anethesia should not be taken lightly with an IVDD dog. YOu can read more on that here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/IVDDcourse/precautions.htmlDid the surgeon say that the SCI was associated with the degenerative disc disease…. IVDD? Or did the accident cause a fracture in the vertebrae thus causing the SCI? How you doing with expressing, does he stay dry in between times? Part of the annual exam might be a urinalysis to see if there is a UTI developing. Otherwise his annual exam would be same as for another dog. Do you brush his teeth…to extend the time a dental would be needed? The less procedures with anesthesia is needed the better for an IVDD dog. Are you up to speed on the actual needed vaccinations? healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2011/10/27/new-canine-vaccination-guidelines.aspxAlso you may also ask the vet about not giving vaccinations in the scruff of the neck but rather as low as possible in a limb as precaution. This would allow for amputation IF a malignant tumor, a vaccine associated sarcoma (VAS) might form at the sight of the vaccination.

I've changed the subject line to let us all know conservative treatment was done in Jan 2013.
How are you doing with expressing the bladder…does he stay dry in between sessions?
Since there was no surgery hence no advanced imaging back in Jan the SCI injury could have been due to a bone fracture or it could have been the last straw for a prematurely aged disc…intervertebral disc disease. No way to know presently.
Let us know what your vet says at the annual exam.

Thank you so much for the useful information you provided. So far everything is going great as far as expressing his urine. He doesn't appear to ever be in any pain, which is a very good thing. Yes we brush his teeth on a daily basis, he did have a dental done just before we adopted him in June. The accident did cause a fracture in the vertebrae causing the SCI.
Thank you
Charlene
