I love the new forum and think this is a wonderful idea! I'm going to do my best to remember to check in and see if I can't offer hope now and then. It was almost seven years ago that I came upon Dodgerslist when my Frankie went down. As I'm sure you often hear, you gave me hope and peace of mind. Your site led me to understand how important crate rest is. You also led me to search out a vet that would help me by teaching me some physical therapy for Frankie. Every time I had a question I could find an answer on your website, or reach out to you. Thank you a million times over! I have the new literature on hand to hand out as I do some upcoming book signing's and events this year. In the past I've talked with many people who have found me via my website and my work with Frankie. Every one of those people I talked with were guided to Dodgerslist to complete the education they needed to know they could do this... they could care for an IVDD dog and life would be okay. I'll do this for the rest of my life as it is my passion to give others hope that IVDD is not a death sentence. Another suggestion I have is anyone who has a a dog with IVDD that they may want to let their vet know they are available to talk with new clients they have that come in with a dog who is diagnosed with IVDD. I let my vet know I'll talk to anyone about this to give them hope. I think often this helps bring a pet owner a big sense of relief knowing they are not alone and can actually hear someone's voice who has gone through this. Though my Frankie never walked on her own again, I'm so grateful we have the option of doggie wheelchairs to help our sweet ones live quality lives, which has also now become a passion of mine in sharing what wonderful lives they can lead. Little did I ever think I'd have a IVDD, but the blessings for me were profound and immense. And never did I think someday I'd adopt another IVDD dog, but now it is all I ever want. I love taking care of them and I'm so happy to now have Joie in my life. These dogs bring my heart pure joy. I'm always so proud to share Dodgerslist and I'll forever be grateful for the team that truly cares about helping others. Keep up the great work! Barbara Techel

Welcome to the new forum Barbara! I truly think it is wonderful and look forward to seeing it grow as large as the Yahoo mail list.. Love your idea about letting our Veterinarians know that we are available to speak with newly diagnosed IVDD clients.. That truly would have helped me on that panicked day when Tyler, our Shih Tzu went down..Thankfully Tyler's neuro vet stepped up to tell me it wasn't hopeless and he had a 95% chance of a normal recovery and he has had just that! When I got home that afternoon, a simple Google search brought me to Dodgerslist and a wealth of information that taught me how to take care of Tyler after surgery.. There is lots of hope, Tyler is living proof of that.. He will always have to be careful but that doesn't mean he can't be happy. Thank you for taking the Dodgerslist literature to your book signings.. How awesome is that?? Speaking of your book, I just ordered a signed copy of Through Frankie's Eyes a few minutes ago! I am also going to order literature from Dodgerslist to pass out at local Veterinary clinics.. Pauliana

Barbara, thank you for the wonderful compliments. We have the same passion as you to help these sweet dogs by educating about disc disease. Thank you for all you do from your own website joyfulpaws.com and your many public appearances. Congratulations on your newest book: Through Frankie's Eyes. Clearly the ones we care for make us stronger and help us to discover our true selves and what we never knew we were capable of. I'll always remember Frankie, with great fondness! She continues to this day to help others in our bladder expressing video. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htm#bladdermovieMy love and Clark's sloppy wet kisses to Joie!

I absolutely agree! This is the best place for info.. When our Clarita had a back issue a month before her "going down", the Vet said NOTHING about crate rest. I have requested the literature so that we can educate him. I look forward to reading Through Frankie's Eyes and continuing to educate myself! Pat

Education is key, that is for sure. I'm so glad we have Dodgerslist and that each of us can be a spokesperson for this disease that dogs can live with.
Hope you enjoy my book!

Thank you, Paula and Clark. How blessed we all are to have these special pups in our lives. Such an honor to help continue the education because of all your hard work, as well as many others on the team for Dodgerslist.
Joie sends her love and kisses too!

Hi Barbara,
I want to welcome you to our forum and to add my thanks for joining. I'm sure you'll add hope and inspiration to our members as well as to those who are experiencing it for the first time. Knowing IVDD is not a death sentence is so important and education is the key to saving more lives. Every Dachshund owner should be aware and knowing what to do immediately can save more.
I, too, love your idea of telling your vet to call you if anyone needs help for their dog going through an IVDD episode. I'm going to be seeing Duncan's vet this week and will be sure to tell her the same. She does pass out our brochures.
All at Dodgerslist send their hugs and love to you and Joie.
Linda

Hi Barbara, My Grace went down on 2/22/13, needing some support- please read my posts, I'm bring her back home today (I hope) after a bad UTI, that I'm sure was caused by the 3 1/2 weeks of a urinary catheter and also a mild case of pacreatitis which are unsure as to the cause. Will be learning manual expression, yikes! I guess this is the second phase of our journey down this unsure road. Thanks, Michele

This new forum is great! Well done, Dodger's List team! My boy Kaiser went down in 2008, had surgery, and is walking and running today. Dodger's List is an invaluable resource!

Hi Barbara, glad to hear Kaiser is still going great. We love the Forum too.... so nice to see faces and dogs of those who come here. We are still trying to get the word out where the Forum is and also to educate about disc disease. If you can Tweet, Facebook that is a good way to help. Also since you were last here, we have redone all of our brochures... check them out and ask Linda to send you some....they are free and great for a vet's office. The business sized cards I keep on me. You never know waiting in line at the grocery store or ... that you'll strike up a conversation with the owner of an IVDD prone breed (short legged and small breed) www.dodgerslist.com/literature/litorder.htmGood to hear from you!
