Rachel, it is the anti-inflammatory Pred level that works on swelling. Destiny has only had one 4-day course of pred. It can take 7-30 days at the anti-inflammatory level before all swelling is gone. Do what you can do advocate for another 5-7 day pred course or even a 14-day course. On the taper THEN begins the test to see if another course is needed or not.
What was the name of the steroid shot?RULE OF THUMB
Pain= another course of anti-inflammatory + all pain meds back on board.
No Pain= just finish out the pred taper...just finish out the 8 weeks of crate rest for the disc to heal.
The full details on how Prednisone, an anti-inflammatory works with a disc episode. Good reading to be able to ask the right questions and discuss treatment. Swelling is the enemy of the spinal cord tissue!!! Not time to be tapering for sure
dodgerslist.com/2020/04/22/healing-swelling-inflammation/Let us know you are on the same page about STRICT crate rest.Tell us what you see today about pain in addition to reluctance to move. There have been no pain meds on board?! Very unusual.
Please contact your vet ASAP to advise of the pain that you're seeing so meds can be adjusted. Advocate that any of the pain meds be given 3x/day (every 8 hours).
— Methocarbamol works on the pain of muscle spasms.
— Tramadol is the general pain reliever.
— Gabapentin works on nerve pain.
There should be no sign of pain from one dose of meds to the next. Have no patience with pain as it does hinder healing. Look for your dog to be acting their normal, interested in life self when pain is fully under control round the clock.
SIGNS OF PAIN what other signs of pain are you now seeing:
◻︎ shivering-trembling ◻︎ yelping when picked up or moved
✔︎ slow to move ◻︎ tight tense tummy
✔︎ arched back
◻︎ ears pinned back ◻︎ head held high or nose to the ground.
◻︎ restless, can't find a comfortable position
✔︎ slow or reluctant to move much in crate such as shift positions
◻︎ looks up with just eyes and does not move head and neck easily.
◻︎ not eating due to painful chewing or in too much overall pain
◻︎ holds front or back leg flamingo style not wanting to bear weight
◻︎ not their normal interested life perky selves
Excellent reading about use of anti-inflammtories during a disc epidode.--- Learn why Prednsone is not a pain reliever, how long it could take to rid the body of all painfully inflamed and swollen tissue around the spinal cord.
dodgerslist.com/2020/04/18/steroids-vs-nsaids/ There is good hope for Destiny to recovery under conservative treatment.
#1 She can't be allowed to stay in pain. that is what pain meds are for.
#2 100% very STRICT rest is need to get the disc to heal
#3 Nerves can heal, it just may take time. Nerve healing can be a very slow thing —better to think in terms of months rather than days, weeks.
RECOVERY SUITE
Excellent tips and ideas to help the rest time go smoother:
dodgerslist.com/2020/05/14/strict-rest-recovery-process/ Please keep us posted on the Rx's for tomorrow--- Pepcid AC 5mgs 2x/day
--- extension of anti-inflammatory pred dose 5mgs twice a day for 5-7 day course or so.
--- 3 different pain meds each dealing with the three kinds of pain very often associated with a disc episode.
