My mother and I both have dachshunds and my mothers sweet little girl Penelope was recently attacked by another dog in her yard. We think but are not sure that the dog threw her and she landed on on her back. She was taken to the vet and a given a full examination, all of her reflexes seemed fine. She walked into the vet on her leash and she walked out. The vet gave her a shot and a muscle relaxant and sent her home and my mother was told to take her to see her regular vet on Monday. Penny went home she went to sleep, she woke up seemed in good spirits, trotted around ate some dinner and went to bed and seemed fine. Very early Sunday morning Penny woke up and had had an accident in the bed, my mom tried to move her and Penny would not or could not move her back legs. My mom took her to emergency and they basically told her she was paralyzed and needed surgery etc. My mom did not like the emergency people they were rude and would not even give a pain killer without an $8,000 down payment. My mother opted to take her home with medication an take her to her own vet on Monday. My question is has anybody experienced this? A dog that initially was walking fine and then lost the use of their legs? Did they regain the use did it turn out okay? I would love to know of any experiences you all have had that may be similar to this.

Welcome to Dodgerslist. My name is Paula what is yours. First thing IS Penelope on currently today on 100% STRIcT crate rest 24/7 only out to potty. That is to protect the spinal cord from permanent injury. Did she get an xray to rule out a fracture in the vertebrae causing the damage to the spinal cord…. or a suspicion that the attach cause a disc to be damaged and then cause the spinal cord injury? How old is Penelope? What are the exact names of meds given at the ER and now for at home. The at home dose in mg's and the frequency you may give them. The proof of bladder control is being able to sniff an old pee spot in the yard and then release of urine. Finding leaks in bedding and leaking on you when lifted mean likely she has lost control and needs for you to manually express the bladder. Let us know your obsevations. Reviewing this video and info ahead of time will allow you to get more out of the vet's lesson www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htm-- What was the date you started 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7? -- Is there still currently pain - shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant/slow to move head or body, tight hard tummy? -- Currently move the legs at all? or wag the tail when you do some happy talk? Keep this in mind after off all meds and there is no pain. : the very, very lightest least aggressive range of motion and leg massage is necessary for paralyzed legs during conservative treatment The information highlighted in PINK pertains to a dog who can't walk. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/massagepassiveexercises.htm-- Eating and drinking OK? -- Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood? More on the future of nerve healing is here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingnerves.htmWe look forward to hearing the answers to the question so we can best support you.

Hi my name is Jen what's yours? Welcome to Dodgerslist. To answer your question yes there are many of us who one day our babies are fine and walking and the next paralyzed. That's how I found my baby 8 weeks ago. I'm sorry for the attack. That's awful. If you know the owner of the other dog you should bring this to their attention! Is penny showing signs if pain? Shivering, tight tummy, yelping, reluctance to move...? 100% crate rest is the best medicine! Please do your reading and learn as much as you can about IVDD. There are still lots of vets who don't know about creat rest to recovery for IVDD. We have been doing accupuncture with Tucker and it has worked wonders for him. I recommend it. It can be started at any time. The sooner the better. Sending positive thoughts and healing prayers to you and Penny.
