[Original subject line: Intro: Olive- mini dachshund] Olive is a 4 year old miniature dachshund - My name is Elisa Olive had surgery on Monday June 1st after chasing a squirrel and running down the stairs (ugh ) in the backyard. ☆ Olive is not presenting to be in pain since taking her home on June 3rd (the first night was rough and sad, she was panting a lot throughout the night and showing signs of pain) ☆ 2 - Olive weighs 5.10 kgs 11.24lbsMedication She is currently on:
- Prednisone (on a weaning schedule... currently 1/2 tablet once a day for 5 days, then 1/2 tablet every other day for 10 days... taken with an ant-acid ) - Tramodol - 1 tablet every 8 hours currently - Gabapentin - 1 tablet every 8 hours currently - Trazadone (1/4 tablet as needed when she is showing signs of anxiety) [Moderator's Note. Please do not edit 5.10 kgs 11.24lbs prednisone tapering tramadol ?mgs 3x/day gabapentin ?mgs 3x/day trazodone ?mgs]☆ 3 Olive is eating and drinking (she is MUCH more thirsty... and in turn needs to go to the bathroom more often) ... she is still her usual self in regards to wanting food all the time! (shes not happy about less food since on crate rest) - her poops are considerably normal (knock on wood)... she is going typically 2x a day, they are firm.. a bit darker in colour than usual, I am considering the meds for that one. ☆ 4 - Olive is a miniature dachshund- smooth red - My name is Elisa ☆ 5 -- yes we received (unfortunately) a diagnosis of IVDD, ruptured disc on her left side. - She saw a vet at the emergency vet, her regular vet, and then was seen by a neurologist in toronto for CT and surgery ☆ 6 Date of surgery was June 1st, 2020 - Surgeon asked olive to be on rest for 6 weeks and then he will reassess from there. - Gave range of motion exercises- 3x a day at home - he will be seeing olive (virtually) for post op next week (two weeks after surgery) from there he will detail when she can start PT ☆ 7 - Olive is able to sniff, squat and release urine and BMs (I have to support with a sling) ☆ 8 - Olive can wobbly walk very slightly- more so in the afternoon evening after she has done some exercises- i have not let her try without the sling yet.. I am worried its too soon and afraid to have her hurt herself. - she wags her tail when she sees us but not nearly as enthusiastically as before QUESTION: Olive really is wanting to sleep/rest on her side... is this okay?? I am very paranoid but she seems most comfortable this way.

Hi, welcome. So sorry poor Olive needed surgery.
Prednisone makes dogs retain salt so they are extra thirsty. It's completely normal.
Please don't cut back on Olive's food because she's on crate rest.
Her body has a big job to do with healing after surgery. She needs the calories.
As far as how she sleeps, I'd let her rest however she's comfortable.
I understand about worrying. It will get better with time.
Sending healing thoughts and prayers to you both.

Elisa, let me add my welcome too. Glad you have joined us here.
Olive is really doing quite well in the nerve healing department with wobbly walking now. She is like us humans, we tend to be freshest in the morning. By afternoon, all that concentrating and trying to coordinate nerve commands with muscle movements when relearning how to walk is tiring.
Her body is doing a lot of repair jobs right now, so as Julie remarked now is not the time to reduce her ordinary food meals. Instead to help her with being more hungry, try giving low-cal snacks of small piece of apple, carrot. Cook up some meat broth. When cool discard bones, fat disc at top. Save the chicken or hamburger meat to crumble 1-2 teaspoons on her food at normal meal times so as not to unbalance her food. Freeze the broth into cubes. Makes an excellent lo-cal snack that takes time to lick and enjoy.
IF her poops are too firm (tramdol can be constipating) then try canned purred pumpkin, Plain pureed canned pumpkin is a magical fruit - its high fiber can firm up stools and help with diarrhea or loosen the stool to help with constipation. NOTE: alternatives are really ripe mashed fresh pear, just take off the peel off; microwaved and mashed peeled sweet potatoe. --To loosen the stool, add equal parts water to each kibble meal and soak overnight. At mealtime add one teaspoon of plain canned pureed pumpkin 1x a day. -- To firm up the stool add 1 teaspoon plain canned pureed pumpkin 1x a day to kibble.
Best to use the sling lightly as prevention from falling at potty time and with her PT walking exercises til you see she is steady enough on her own.
