Hello, my name is Meg, and my chihuahua mix rescue dog, Buford, had surgery on 5/6 for stage 5 IVDD. We have finished with the post surgical medications. Our surgeon recommended 4 weeks of strict crate rest, and we have been taking him for PT. He has been getting laser therapy as well as acupuncture, but he has been fighting the acupuncture lately, and we just started on the water treadmill today. At his 2 week suture removal they did find that he had regained deep pain, and he has gotten his happy tail wag back. He pulls himself to standing on his knuckles back paws, but it seems to be that he’s using his front half to do that. We had him in a pack n play, but just the other day he broke out when I left the room, and I found him across the room pulling toys out of his toy box. Needless to say, he is back in his crate only now, and the therapist doesn’t feel that it was a major setback. We are just so thankful to have found this page, and so hopeful that he will walk again one day.

Meg, welcome to the Forum. We are glad have joined us! That underwater treadmill is an excellent therapy to re-learn the art of walking for Buford. What an escape artist you have! With graduating from 4 weeks of crate rest, you can begin a slow introduction back to family life and activities and making your home back friendly. Now is a good time to be determining how you are going to ease back into more normal activity. The idea is to gradually give more freedom under controlled conditions. Not free reign of the house and yard immediately! LOL Take a look at our information and then come up with a plan to gradually increase activity over about a month's time following the end of crate rest. Also check out how to teach four paws on the floor! www.dodgerslist.com/literature/AfterCrateRest.htmNow is the perfect time if you haven't already to make those home modifications so that you can reduce the stress on the spine in the future. No more stairs, ramps up to furniture, or blocking furniture all together. All those ideas and more are in this link: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/protectback.htm Ramps: dodgerslist.boards.net/thread/867/ramps** Keep us posted on how the treadmill work is going.
