Janice, thank you for joining in with our efforts to educate about IVDD!!!
If this is another disc episode, the all vets would be put into the position of having to guess how long a course of Rimadyl to give. The only way to know when Rimadyl has achieved the goal of getting rid of all painful spinal cord swelling is with a test stop of Rimadyl at the course's end along with the stop of gabapentin.
What most vets try is a 5-7 day course or some choose a 14-day course. The reason is Rimadyl is known to cause bleeding ulcers along with other serious side effects. So no one wants a dog on Rimadyl past the point of achieving elimination of painful inflammation. Can you tell us the reason your vet is Rxing such a long course (30 days)? What is the harm to do a test stop at the 7-day or 14-day point, so there is no more using of Rimadyl if it would turn out to be all pain had been resolved in 7 or 14 days?
Could you tell us more details about her meds.
How much does she weigh? Does she continue to be pain free on the gabapentin? How many mgs of gabapentin and how often do you give it? How many mgs of Pepcid AC (famotidine) and how often are you giving it? At the 6/29 30-day course, did the test stop on 7/29 reveal Annibell was in pain?
