I have an 8 year old handicapped dachshund. He has been handicapped since January. I haven't been able to afford a cart for him. I am desperate to help him have a better life. I don't want to put him to sleep. He is my baby. My money issues are not going to get any better because I'm going to be having my first child on the 16th. Help me please!

Welcome to Dodgerslist. What is your doxie's name? And wow a new addition to your home this month! Can you fill us in on some details so we'll best understand your doxie's situation. -- Is is on any meds at this time? Did he have surgery or conservative treatment in January? -- Tell us more about his neuro status. Currently can your dog wobbly walk? move the legs at all? or wag the tail when you specifically do some happy talk? -- Do you do daily ROM and massage for his leg: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/massagepassiveexercises.htm-- Has he ever had acupuncture -- Do you find wet bedding or leaks on you when lifted up? Or does he have some bladder control as proven by the sniff and pee test. That is you set him on an old pee spot, he sniffs and then maybe attemps to squat and then releases urine. -- If he does not have bladder control do you express for both urine and for poop. How often…and does he stay dry in between sessions. More on expressing: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htm-- How does he doing scooting around the house…do you use a garment to protect against floor and rug burns? Several kinds of garments are listed at #6: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/AfterCrateRest.htmThere are wheelchairs at all different prices… Dogs to Go runs under $100 with shipping I believe…would that be something you could save up for? More on Wheelchairs here: www.dodgerslist.com/links/cart.htm Look forward to hearing more on your pup.

My dogs name is Dane. He wears a diaper. He expresses his urine and feces whenever he needs too. His legs cross when he moves about the house. He doesn't travel much. He has no sores just some where the diaper is. But I keep them clean and medicated.
We did treatment for over a month when this first happened. He took prednisone and tramadol. He also received laser treatments. I also have done water therapy at home. No improvements.

So are you saying Dane can walk, just is wobbly and his legs will cross at times? "He expresses his urine and feces whenever he needs too" Does this mean Dane has bladder control to pee when and where he wishes to. Dogs normally will only want to pee outdoors not in the house. Do you see him sniff an old pee spot in the grass and then he released urine…that is bladder control. OR do you find urine leaks in his bedding on the floor. Does poop just plop out wherever in the house?
Were you shown how to express his bladder and how to express for poop so here are not accidents? Let us know what you believe he has bladder control or no bladder control.

No walking at all. He hops kind of. Poop just comes out whenever in the house. He doesn't pee in spots outside. He just pees whenever.

Barbara Techel has a program set up to help needy dogs have a cart. You would need to apply but you can check it out and fill out an application at nationalwalknrolldogday.com/

Christine, can you tell us your expressing schedule for both poop and pee. It may need to be tweaked so that he does stay dry in between the times you express and to stop using diapers. Expressing for poop is a convenience thing so no tootsie rolls are found! LOL However expressing for urine is a health issue so a urinary tract infection (UTI) is avoided.
When is the last time his urine was tested to make sure he does not have a bladder infection (UTI)
When you express his bladder can you feel the shape of it from completely fills the tummy area down to the last stage where it comes so flat you can almost feel the fingers of your other hand? Good videos and lots of tips here:
