Hi,
My 35 lb mixed breed has been paralyzed now for two years and I have been expressing her successfully by straddling her from behind and pressing down on her bladder with my hands while holding her up. At this point, I am in lots of shoulder pain from this repetitive movement. I have tried expressing her while she is lying down with wee wee pads but am not as successful. I am wondering if using a catheter every 4 to 6 hours is an option.
THanks, Judy

Judy, I'm sorry to hear your shoulder is having problems. I think it would be very stressfull to have to maintain pressure on the bladder at the same time you are trying to hold her rear up. Have you tried expressing while she is in a wheelchair, that way you would only need to press on the bladder, might be different enough your shoulders could handle it? Is her bladder the size that you can come from underneath, on her belly and with one hand squeeze the bladder? It worked that way for my smaller doxie quite well. Catheters might be an option. Do know they are usually last resort because their use needs to be quite sterile. The insertion can scar tissue and there is a cost to the supplies. Discuss with your vet, maybe if you can rest that shoulder sufficiently for a period of time, you could the resume manual expressing. Have you seen the videos on expressing that might give you some other ideas: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/Expressing.htm
