Chicos post surgery complications
Last year my 3yo old poodle terrier began having back pain, we took him to the vet and they did an X-ray and noticed he had a disc that had calcifications they diagnosed him with IVDD and gave me meds and strict crate rest. He never lost ability to walk
. After a week he was fine and was dying to go out and play but we kept him on crate rest. Fast forward to
July 13th and he wakes up paralyzed with deep pain sensation.
1. Which breed? What is your dog's name? Your name too? Hi everyone my dogs name is Chico and he is a 3 year old poodle terrier, my name is Noemi and we live in
Austin, Tx What country if not United States?
☀︎2-- How much does your dog weigh?
13 lbs☀︎3-- Is the surgeon a general practice DVM or a specialist surgeon (ACVIM neurology or ACVS)? general practice his credentials says
DACVS☀︎4-- What was the date of the surgery? Are you now doing 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 only out to potty and only for surgeon-directed supervised PT? No laps, no couch, no sleeping in bed with you, no scooting or dragging around during potty times. No chiro (aka VOM)? He had surgery July 14th. We are doing 6 weeks of crate rest with 3-5 min walks and physical therapy 3xday that they taught us how to do.
☀︎5-- What did your surgeon direct for PT (always a supervised, eye-ball to eyeball controlled therapy) and for post-op crate rest? We are doing range of motion exercises and weight bearing exercises 3xday and 6wks crate rest
☀︎6-- How many weeks did the surgeon want for crate rest including his directives for supervised and controlled PT? 6 weeks
☀︎7--Is there still currently pain - shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant/slow to move head or body, tight hard tummy? Full pain relief is expected in 1 hour of pain meds and stays that way dose to dose. Your vet needs to know asap to adjust meds if there are pain signs. He had been trembling and slight yelping. However, he
would not take his tramadol and later on had
bloody diarrhea.
☀︎8-- Please list the exact names of meds currently given, the start date, their doses in mgs and how often you give?
We were given tramadol 12.5 mg every 8 hours-having really hard time giving this to him
gabapentin 50mg/1ml every 12 hours
omeprazole 10mg once a day
[Moderator's note: please do not modify
13lbs

gabapentin 50gs 2x/day
omeprazole 10mgs 1x/day
fentanyl patch as of 7/18: lasts for 3 days
metronidazole]
☀︎9-- Currently can your dog wobbly walk? move the legs at all? or wag the tail when you do some happy talk? He i
s wagging his tail and he is
moving his back legs but very wobbly☀︎10-- Do you find wet bedding or leaks on you when lifted up? yes, when he had diarrhea, however he was peeing and pooping outside prior to this.
☀︎11-- Eating and drinking OK? Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood?
Yesterday he was eating fine and he
pooped once and it was very mucousy. I had a really hard time giving him his tramadol and tried many different ways but he would not take it. At 3pm I noticed he was bleeding quite a bit from his rectum and it got all over his towel and blanket. I
rushed him back to the emergency hospital where he had the surgery and they gave him fluids, he is
currently there [ER] right now. They applied a
fentanyl pain patch and are giving him
metronidazole and IV fluids. I am supposed to
pick him back up today around 7pm. I am just extremely worried about him. They said this was most likely
caused from stress from the surgery.
