I'll admit right up front that I have been VERY skeptical about herbal calmers. However, we have tried every drug in our vets arsenal to calm Polly when it comes to fireworks, and nothing worked. ACE, phenobarbital, Valium, Xanax, we tried them all. So.....in desperation I went to our local specialty pet store and on their recommendation chose a product called Happy Traveller. We started dosing her several days before the fourth of July. I am so pleased with how it worked. She still got nervous, but NOTHING like the complete freak out she usually experiences. We added background noise - fans, dishwasher, washing machine, television. Rather than frantically running around the house panting and crying, she spent the evening in my lap, sleeping off and on. MIRACULOUS!! i thought I'd share in case anyone else is a skeptic like me. I'll see if I can find a link with more product information. www.amazon.com/Ark-Naturals-Happy-Traveler-capsules/dp/B00078VAMW

Glad to hear you found something that would work for Polly! It is always good for each owner to review the contents of a product to make sure there would be no contraindications with any med a dog is on. Since many IVDD dogs can be on an anti-inflammatory which is processed in the liver and tramadol (a synthetic opiate), this calmer would not be a good choice for those dogs. Happy Traveler contains: Valerian, German chamomile, Kava kava ,St.John's wort, Melatonin St. Johns Wort has many contraindications. France has banned the use of St. John’s wort products. The ban appears to be based on a report issued by the French Health Product Safety Agency warning of significant interactions between St. John’s wort and some medications. Several other countries, including Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada, are in the process of including drug-herb interaction warnings on St. John’s wort products. Some medications are changed and broken down by the liver. St. John's wort might increase how quickly the liver breaks down some medications. Taking St. John's wort along with some medications that are broken down by the liver can decrease the effectiveness of your medication. Before taking St. John's wort, talk to your healthcare provider if you take any medications that are changed by the liver. www.rxlist.com/st_johns_wort-page3/supplements.htm

Well dang, I should have known. I figured that since she wasn't on any other meds, it would be okay.
