Hi Wondering if this is normal Have been to the vet Patches is a 7 year old Dachshund longhair red 13.8 # tweenie size dog, about two weeks ago she started screaming in pain went to the vet he thinks it is a disk in her neck. Started out on Rimadyl 1/2 tablet 25mg every 8-12 hours, not touching the pain went back to the vet Tramadol added1/4 tab, no help 3rd trip to the vet Methocarbamol 500mg cut into 1/4th tab. Have been mixing the pills into canned dog food have been getting them down that way until today. Patches Freezes sits with her back humped up,shakes and pants all signs of pain. I think she needs to be put down hubby does not, wants to give her more time.He does not want me to poke the pills down her but tonight not eating the canned food with the pills in it. We are both on disability so do not have a lot of monies, and the vet say s she is still in the medical stage not the surgery stage I just hate to see her in pain. I had a TLK 04 10 days after the TLK had a herniated disk, also found 2 bulging disks, dergentive disk disease so no longer could work as a nurses aide which I was for 31 years. Then Hubby fell in the house broke his neck but had a good recovery so we know how Patches feels she has been on crate rest we carry her up and down steps to go potty. She is not allowed to inter act with her big brother a 96# Doberman. question : Freezes sits with her back humped up, shakes and pants all signs of pain, she stays that way for an hour or more since it is her neck should I give her her pills by hand since I can't get her to eat the canned food with the pills in it ?? Just do not want her in pain this has been going on about 2weeks now she does not seem to be getting any better at all but she has not been screaming.

Please don't put her down. I'm sure there is funding for surgery for her from some sort of rescue. I would even consider surrendering her to a charity, if you're unable to afford the cost of the surgery. Most times, the rescue will have the monies to have the surgery performed. I'm sure there are links on this website with information for assistance with cost of the surgery.

Papbouv, welcome to Dodgerslist. My name is Paula what is yours? Here is what you need to do to be helpful in Patches recovery, 1. Her pain is not under control because her pain meds are not YET right. Tramadol has a very short half life of 1.7 hours and is not likely to control pain unless prescribed for every 8 hours. Also 12.5mg of Tramadol is a VERY low dose for Patches weight. My 13 pound dog was prescribed 50mg every 8 hours. So get on the phone asap and tell the vet of you observations of pain. Methocarbamol can also be given every 8 hours. So your vet still has lots of room to get pain under control. Often with the hard to control pain gabapentin will be added to the mix. 2. Things you can do to help with a neck disc: 3. Learn all you can about this disease and know that with proper care the disc can heal in 8 weeks. But have absolutely no patience at all with pain. Pain should be under control dose to dose of the right dose, the right frequency and the right mix in 1 hour and there after. Let us know what changes the vet has made to the meds….dose in mg, the frequency you can give each of the meds. Learn about the $4 per ea generic presciption offered at many grocery store pharmacies, Walmart, Target. And see if you can get an Rx to take there: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/IVDDcourse/medications_used.htmlWe'll be anxious to hear how your vet helps to get the pain under control.

Hi my name is Maureen. I am so sorry that Patches is having such a hard time. Paula is right about the pain medications- they need to be increased and given with more frequency. Call your Vet and don't take no for an answer. Necks are very painful We are here to help anyway that we can. Here is a link to information on neck discs www.dodgerslist.com/literature/cervical.htm Keeping you in thought and prayer.
