Ticker, the neck discs can be more difficult to heal and usually are more painful. Kudos to you for pointing out Termiral P contains prednisolone, a steroid. Minus points to your vet for not recognizing any amount of a steroid is not good to use with the other class of anti-inflammatory NSAIDs such as Previcox. See if you can advocate for prednisolone or prednisone so there does not need to be a washout. Steroids are the strongest of antiflammatories and non-steroid anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS) are the lesser ones. More often than not, a steroid needs to be used with neck discs. Bandit is still in MAJOR pain… your vet is not treating pain aggressively enough. Bandit also needs an anti-iflammatory on board now…advocate for Prednisolone or prednisolone. Tramadol is a very short acting pain reliever with a half life of 1.7 hours. Not likely to control pain unless prescribed every 8 hours. And the dose of 25mgs for a 20 pound dog still has room to move up to 50 mgs doses. Be sure to give methocarbamol at the higher frequency of 3x a day. Your vet has yet another pain med…gabapentin. So you will need to be a strong advocate for proper pain relief…tell her the signs of pain you are seeing (head to the ground) or any of these others…. shivering nearing the next dose of pain meds, yelping. Be sure you are doing the extra things necessary with a neck disc: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/cervical.htm5mg of Pepcid AC 30 mins before the anti-inflammatory and there after every 12 hours.

I am so sorry that this has happened to Bandit. He's lucky to have an IVDD knowledgeable Mom! I don't have any advice - just wanted to send healing thoughts and prayers your way

Hi Ticker Marie! I hope the panting has stopped now and that Bandit is more comfortable. Glad you are keeping a close eye for adverse reactions. Here is a link that describes what to look for: www.vetinfo.com/side-effects-previcox.html#bLots of prayers and hugs coming your way..You have so much to cope with right now with two dogs in crate rest!

Hi Ticker Marie..
I am so glad Bandit isn't in pain and is walking normally! That's a wonderful sign!! Glad also he stopped panting!
Both Steroids and NSAIDS have similar side effects.. Yes the increase in drinking and the increase in appetite is a side effect/ adverse reaction and a decrease would be also. If you can reach your vet to discuss please do.. If not do call that phone number below to get some clarification on adverse reactions. Be sure also to always give the Previcox with a meal and also the Pepcid AC 30 minutes before.. I would also talk with your vet about adding Sucralfate to coat his stomach especially since there was Prednisone in the Temiral P.. even with it being a low dose, with the quick change to a NSAID, it increases the chance of stomach side effects that Bandit doesn't need..Better to head that off at the pass.
From the Previcox website: The most common side effects associated with treatment for dog arthritis with PREVICOX involve the digestive tract (vomiting and decreased food consumption). Liver and kidney problems have also been reported with the use of NSAIDs. Look for the following side effects that may indicate your dog is having a problem with PREVICOX, or may have another medical problem in addition to dog arthritis:
Decrease or increase in appetite. Vomiting. Change in bowel movements (such as diarrhea, or black, tarry or bloody stools). Change in behavior (such as decreased or increased activity level, lack of coordination, seizure, or aggression). Yellowing of gums, skin, or whites of the eyes (jaundice). Change in drinking habits (frequency or amount consumed). Change in urination habits (frequency, color, or smell). Change in skin (redness, scabs, or scratching). Unexpected weight loss. It is important to stop treatment and contact your veterinarian immediately if you think your dog has a medical problem or side effect while taking PREVICOX tablets. If you have additional questions about possible side effects, talk with your veterinarian or call 1-877-217-3543.

Update on Bandit from his mom:
Bandit does NOT have a cervical neck IVDD problem or back problem, it was an allergic reaction to the Advantix I put on his neck and down his back and he is no longer in pain and we are treating him accordingly.
