Quick question about poop.... Dudley's poop on 3 occasions now since he's been on his meds look like they are encased in mucous... Should I be concerned? Is this from his meds?? There's no blood or anything like that and it's not diarrhea . He's been eating his normal food except I've been blending it with water and adding mashed sweet potato. He's also getting his pill via sardines. Color and frequency have been the same as usual..., thanks
Also I'm very aware that his meds upset his tummy and have read all the side effects. Mucous was not listed as a side effect

Clear, white or yellow mucus is normal in small amounts. If this is something new and in large amounts it could signal irritation from Prednisone. Do check with your vet and discuss if sucralfate should be added as an extra protection to the GI tract.

Ok thanks! I'll keep an eye on it and call his vet if it persists.

Dot, does he seem to be in pain or uncomfortable?

Linda... He doesn't seem to be in pain or uncomfortable. Today he's been very alert! He's been wide awake for 8 hours just laying in his crate watching out the window all day. When I take him out he's already pulling on his leash, lifting leg to pee and his arched back is flattening back out. I'm guessing it could be all the oils in the sardines?

I am thinking it might be the oils in the sardines too especially if that is the only change in diet you have made and he seems to be comfortable and recovering well otherwise.
Happy to hear of Dudley's improvements!! : )

We recommend a tin of sardines packed in water if you have them in your grocery store.

Thanks for the responses!! We only get the sardines in water at the store in the tin can. I agree... Must have been from the extra oils in the sardines and sweet potatoes. His poop is back to normal now! Dudley is already showing a lot of improvement! He's been lifting his leg to pee, pulling on his leash some, hunch back is going away, his appetite has been great and he's been laying on his back in his crate some! I had to work 8 hours tonight and he didn't even pee in the crate while I was gone! I've already tapered him on his Tramadol from every 6 hours to 12 hours in preparation for his taper on the Pred on Monday. He hasn't been acting like he's in pain anymore so I only give him the Tram in the AM and once in the PM before bed. I didn't understand why the Vet (intern) increased his Tram frequency from 8 hours to 6 hours in the 1st place... Last year his disc episode was much worse than this year and he took it last year every 8 hours. I kept a log of his meds last year and read through them to compare...either way... He's doing great and handling his crate rest well. We bought him a wagon and put his crate in it so we can move it better from room to room.... It works fantastic!! I'm also able to keep a stash of his pee pads and clean blankets in there too so I have everything I need on hand since my hubby works a lot and is not here to help me 4 days a week. Thanks for all the support and all you do!! ~ Dot
Oh I also layed off those sardines and have been giving him boiled chicken instead.
