Hello everyone! Like many of you, visited this great website previously and now we are part of the surgery club. Mr Calvin, our 8 yr old mini-dachshund, We crate rested and he was back to normal in 2 weeks. Fast forward to September and he had another episode, this time it was worse. We crate rested and were recommended to a vet who does doggy acupuncture that worked miracles for another doxie friend of ours. Seemed to get better and responded well to a few sessions but had a major setback and was referred to a local neurologist. Again, he was widely known here and had been performing surgeries for almost 20 years.
MRI confirmed herniated disc in neck pressing on his spinal cord, causing pain and inability to walk, legs bowed, knuckling, etc. No amount of rest, needles, or meds was going to fix that, so the same day he had surgery and everything went terrific. They did a preventive measure during surgery to hopefully avoid this issue again, no guarantees but we can hope. Mr Calvin goes for his 2 week check up next Wednesday and is on strict crate rest, carried outside for potty breaks. We have a wonderful family friend who walks him while we are at work and even has her own "cargo ship" he loves being transported down the stairs in! It's major surgery so we are being patient with his recovery as he still is sore to stand and go outside on some days, while limiting too many steps.
He has been doing pretty well except for the last night and tonight of an upset tummy, causing diarrhea and lots of washing his crate blankets, poor guy. Meds are listed below, wondering if we should be adding in Pepcid AC to help settle and protect his stomach, vet did not prescribe. We forgot to ask vet and techs, will be calling them Monday am. He seems ok now, resting and hopefully done with all that. Thanks for reading and providing such a great FREE resource for us! ☀︎2-- How much does your dog weigh? 14.2 lbs
☀︎3-- Is the surgeon a general practice DVM or a specialist surgeon (ACVIM neurology or ACVS)? Specialist, Dr. Levine Sarasota, FL. (DACVIM)
☀︎5-- What did your surgeon direct for PT (always a supervised, eye-ball to eyeball controlled therapy) and for post-op crate rest? Finding out PT Wednesday after suture removal.
☀︎6-- How many weeks did the surgeon want for crate rest including his directives for supervised and controlled PT? Two weeks post-op crate rest then very slowly re-introduce moving, balance, more details coming.
☀︎7--Is there still currently pain - shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant/slow to move head or body, tight hard tummy? Full pain relief is expected in 1 hour of pain meds and stays that way dose to dose. Your vet needs to know asap to adjust meds if there are pain signs.
No pain, sore in mornings, good and bad days it seems for potty times. Did not ween of pred. yet due to recent signs of dragging legs, no potty when outside, not interested in much.
☀︎8-- Please list the exact names of meds currently given, the start date, their doses in mgs and how often you give?
[14.2 lbs.]
Predisone- ?? mgs 2x a day (12 hours) Tramadol ?? mgs 2-3x 1/2 tablet (as needed) Gabepetelin? [Gabapentin] (sp) ?? mgs 2x every 12 hours. [Pepcid AC?? Sucralfate??]
☀︎9-- Currently can your dog wobbly walk? move the legs at all? or wag the tail when you do some happy talk? Wobbly walk to go, then rests in grass, tail wagging when we get home. Sometimes willing to walk a step, other times no interest.
☀︎10-- Do you find wet bedding or leaks on you when lifted up? No
☀︎11-- Eating and drinking OK? Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood? Was fine until last night, runny stool, one time dark, diarrhea earlier today, now fine. Need Pepcid AC advice,

Hi. My name is Julie. Don't wait. Get Pepcid AC today or the generic famotidine. You can get it at the store. Prednisone works well for inflammation but can cause problems such as stomach ulcers. Diarrhea is a warning sign. My dog is 13 pounds and took half a 10 mg tablet 2x a day. Give it 1/2 hour before Prednisone. Check with your vet about dosage. Hope Mr. Calvin feels better soon.

Welcome to Dodgerslist. My name's Marjorie- what's yours? Julie has given you excellent advice. Please do speak to your vet today and ask in this way "Is there any medical reason my dog may not take Pepcid AC?" If your vet says your dog has no health issues such as liver, heart, etc to keep her from taking Pepcid AC, then do get it on board. If you can't reach a vet today and you know that Mr. Calvin has no heart or liver problems, do get Pepcid AC on board today and then let your vet know ASAP that you're giving it. Since you're already seeing diarrhea, please also advocate for the addition of Sucralfate. Sucralfate works in a different way from Pepcid AC and works on bandaging and healing any damaged areas. Sucralfate will require timing with other meds…so do your homework here: www.marvistavet.com/sucralfate.pmlPlease let us know the exact mgs of each medicine being given. Reluctance to move is a sign of pain. Be sure to give the Tramadol every 8 hours as it has a short half life and works most efficiently when given every 8 hours (3x/day). Also Gabapentin works best when given every 8 hours (3x/day) so if you see any sign of pain, speak to the vet about moving Gabapentin up to 3 times a day. Also neck injuries are often times accompanied by muscle spasms so if you're seeing signs of pain, Methocarbamol can also be added. There are some things that you can do to help the neck heal, such as softening hard kibble, raising food/water dishes so he doesn't have to bend his head. More tips here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/cervical.htmPlease do let us know what PT will be prescribed and the specifics given on further crate rest. We usually see a surgeon prescribe 4-6 weeks of crate rest following surgery, only out of the crate for potty time and PT. Please let us know what the vet says after speaking to them today about the diarrhea. Healing prayers for Mr. Calvin.

Thank you for the love and feedback! I did start the Pepcid AC this morning and will update my vet tomorrow. Seems to help so far, so thank you. He has been hand fed in his crate for a month now, so there is no bending over for him to eat and has a great appetite.
He was on methocarbanol before surgery but none was prescribed afterwards, only the meds listed below. My name is David. I will do my HW on the sucralfate and ask the surgeon/vet asap.
[14.2 lbs] Predisone- 5mg 2x a day every 12 hours for 7 days, then taper off to 1x 24 hr for 7 days, then 5mg every 48 hours for days. Vet had steroid remain at 2x a day for a few days extra due to pain and reluctant to move last week. Gabapentin-100mg as needed 2x day every 12 hours Tramadol-3x a day every 8 hours 1/2 tablet 50mg [Pepcid AC 5mgs 2x/day?]

David, can you update us on the diarrhea? Abating any or still loose...any black or red blood? IF not firming up, do not wait til tomorrow, call ER or whatever you need to do to get sucralfate on board, today, Sunday.
Pepcid AC works to suppress stomach acids. Sucralfate work to bandaid those damages spots of the stomach lining and provide the right environment for healing.

No diarrhea since last night, seems to be better. Only peed today, no #2, eating and taking meds normally. Will try again before bedtime to take out to see what he can do. Terrible storms down here in FL today.
Emailed surgeon with full update and will call tomorrow.

Don't be surprised if there's no bm for a while after diarrhea. It really cleans them out. Glad Mr. Calvin is feeling better.

Mr Calvin is doing great! Slowly walking around and getting back to normal but he is moving and feeling good. No more meds after this weekend so we will keep a close eye on him for any signs of pain.
Thank you to all for the help during these tough few weeks. Happy to see our boy back to himself. You all are great!

I am glad that Mr. Calvin is doing so well. Did the surgeon release him from crate rest? What kind of PT was recommended?
