Hello, I m Popi from Greece and I have a 7 years old doxie...3 months ago I realized that my dog was in pain so I took him to the vet and told me about the ivdd problem...Marti had the ability to walk-never loose it- so they told me to restict him for 15 days without medicine. My dog was getting better,so we sceduled the surgery on 15/5 because they told me that my dog was like a bomb and at any time can paralyse. I did all the necessary tests(myelogramm, etc) and15/5 [Editor: May 15th] took him to the hospital...but after examination they told me that my dog was very lucky like he healed himself and absolutely fine and that it was not necessary to do the surgery. Moreover, they told me to take there after three months and to do probably a surgery to remove the disk or to make a hole for decompression. He is a very strong and brave dog! I love him so much and I ll take care of him wherever he needs it!
What s your opinion about my story?

Popi, glad you have joined us! Just like with people, a disc problem can self heal. With people, they will usually follow the Drs orders of full rest and recover just fine. However with dogs it is different for two reasons. 1. Dogs do not follow doctors orders of STRICT rest and most always do the unexpected causing further damage to the disc. This is why a recovery suite is essential to ensure a safe recovery. 2. Dogs have a different anatomy where almost all disc problems will compress the spinal cord potentially causing spinal cord damage. I would say Marti is a VERY, very lucky dog. It takes 8 weeks of STRICT rest to let a damaged disc heal. While the disc is healing it can easily retear. You can be very helpful to Marti by learning his disease. This way if there is another disc problem as his discs further prematurely age, you will be fully educated to know what to do when you see any sign of pain. May I suggest this on-line course that has audio to listen to: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/IVDDcourse/index.htmlThis video will help you to see why 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 for a full 8 weeks during a disc episode is very important to protect the spinal cord.
