Hi everyone Rocco is eight years old, he's a 12 pound red/brindle long-haired doxxie. Yesterday he had surgery in his neck - discs were compressed between C4/C5 AND C5/C6, which made the surgery a little riskier. My little trooper is doing very well in recovery!!! (before I rescued him, he'd also been paralyzed when he was four years old and had back surgery then, which he also recovered very well from) So he IS a trooper! One of my previous doxxies, Nanners, also had neck surgery. Daphne, my other current doxxie (and puppy mill rescue) had been paralyzed and had back surgery before I got her, she recovered just fine as well. Needless to say, I'm very familiar with all this! I'm having a hard time figuring out "layout" for when Rocco comes home...since I'm at work all day, I can't leave him just in the crate, because he'll need to have puppy pad as well. My thought is to get a pen, put bedding on one side, puppy pad other side....I'm concerned that will allow too much room for movement . He is going to be easily moving around, walking fine..and Daphne will be in the kitchen with him, on the other side of that pen. Suggestions on "perfect balance" of not too much room, but enough stability/confinement? Thank you! Melissa

Pollysmom's suggestion is perfect. Because Rocco has had surgery and the offending disc material's been removed, he can have a bit more freedom an ex-pen arrangement can provide.
When he comes home let us know the meds if any and what the surgeon directs for PT.

Hi Melissa,
Congratulations on Rocco's successful recovery. We recently went through this with our 12 yr old Ally. She sneezed on a Thursday an was paralyzed from her neck down, she could move her eyes but nothing else. We tried Laser treatments for a couple of days with no success and she had surgery on Tuesday. Someone donated a play pen for her recovery suite and it worked very well. Ally had room to move around some as she regained the ability to move and there was room for her bed and puppy pads. Ally is now walking on her own but still has some weakness on her right side. She gets stronger every day. Dodgerslist is a wonder site for advice and encouragement.
