doxie - yes
Peanut has had 1 or 2 small episodes since she regained use of her back legs the end of december/12. she had another episode 7 days ago & woke up with a lot of pain & trembling at 3:00am in the morning. I started her on the regime & took her to the vet friday to get her meds refilled. they can't really tell anything by just examining her but know that it is ivdd. this time I saw a new vet at the regular vet & she mentioned "putting down" twice & that is why I will not ever see her again. Peanut did not like her & we had to muzzle her for the new vet to examine her & she spoke gruffly & rudely to peanut - whereas the regular vet that owns the practice was not there & he has a good rapport with peanut - she has never had to be muzzled with him. he never ever spoke of putting down until I mentioned when peanut was paralyzed. the vet took her temp & it was 103 degrees but she thought maybe because she was worked up about being muzzled, etc. I think she has felt a little hot all weekend since seeing the vet.
-- what are the exact names of meds currently given, their doses in mgs and frequencies? I started this last sunday 4/14 so it will change somewhat tomorrow pepcid ac 10 mg: 1/2 pill 30 minutes before tramadol every 12 hours prednisone 20 mg: 1/2 tablet every 12 hours methocarbamol 500 mg: 1 tablet every 12 hours tramadol 50 mg: 1/2 pill every 12 hours
-- currently can your dog wobbly walk? move the legs at all? or wag the tail when you do some happy talk? wobbly walks, moves legs, lays on back, wags tail... -- do you find wet bedding or leaks on you when lifted up? no -- eating and drinking ok? yes, just lots of water & peeing going on due to meds -- poops ok - normal color no dark or bright red blood? yes, poops normal
my question is this: if this continues off & own do you keep the dog on pain meds but not so much steroids??? I do not have the money for surgery. also, do you recommend having a water bowl in the crate??? I leave for work at 7:00am & come home for lunch - arriving around 11:45am & then home again around 4:45. i'm worried if I do put water in the crate - attached to the wire - that she may not be able to hold her urine before I get home for lunch or work.

Welcome to Dodgerslist. My name is Paula what is yours?
Can you tell us if pain is being controlled currently with the pain meds you listed (tramadol and methocarbamol) That is no shivinging, no reluctance to move, no yelping?
Does she have a normal temperature now? (normal rectal temperature is 100.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit)
What will be the change exactly tomorrow in the meds?
While on pred the body will be thirsty and thus the need to drink more. She must have access to water at all times. She will like need to pee every 3-4 hours.
Crate rest does need to be as strict as possible to let the disc heal, as limited movement as as possible. Is it possible to place a pee pad in her crate so she can at least move there a foot step or two to relieve herself. When you are at home, then the recovery suite should be only large enough to turn around in, when lying down to fully stretch out the legs.

My name is jan carver
pain is being controlled currently? none of these but humped up when walking - can tell it is not natural...
Does she have a normal temperature now? I don't know I have not taken it - don't have a rectal thermometer... but she does not seem as hot - a little cooler this evening - not has hot feeling & she has been peeing more this evening - probably because she is coming off the prednisone & the water is coming off...
What will be the change exactly tomorrow in the meds? weening off the prednisone...
well - she has been awful good about holding her pee from 7:00am to 11:45am - I put water in her crate today & I think she peed on her blanket because I washed it but it was not yellow but it smelled a little like medication
I upgraded to a larger crate of 36" length - there is no where to put a pee pee paper - it is loaded with thick blankets because if I don't pad it well it is like laying on cement/linoleum floor in the kitchen.
she seems to be resting well this evening - the only meds she has had this evening are 1/2 pepcid ac, 1/2 tramadol & a whole muscle relaxer.

Jan, on the taper off of pred you will want to watch for any signs of pain returning. Pain would indicate that there is still swelling in the spinal cord that needs to be resolved. So likely your vet would then call for another course of Pred at the original dose and then try another taper later.
What is the taper tomorrow, the dose in mg and how often to give Pred?
We have our fingers crossed for a good taper and no pain...do let us know.
