This is my first post, so forgive me if I am posting in the wrong thread. My doxie,Otis had surgery 1/19 for 3 ruptured discs. We were told he had no deep pain sense, would probably not recover any,but he would be a great wheelchair dog. We elected for surgery just to relieve his pain. His recovery has been great, and this past week he has actually tried pushing up with one of his back legs. While we continue to build a wheelchair, I am much more hopeful he may regain some motor function in the hind leg. Anyhow, we have weaned him off his prozosin,as he seems to express well without it. My question is, are we endangering him in anyway but not continuing the med? The side effects worried me, but I don't want to damage his bladder or bowels. He does give us indication when he wants to defecate, but shows no sign of urination. Thanks you, Laura

Laura, welcome to Dodgerslist! That is some good news on nerve healing. Bladder control may also be happening. Have you done the sniff and pee test lately? Let Otis sniff an old pee spot outdoors and see if he will then release urine. As bladder control starts to return, expressing may be more difficult. Prozosin is used to relax the urethral sphincter to make expressing easier. I totally agree if you are expressing fine without out, then why use it at all. No use to subject him to side effects when there is no benefit to be gained. Are you doing any PT whether at a clinic or at home to help him learn to walk. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/watertherapy.htmAny acupuncture or laser light therapy www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingacupuncture.htmAre you doing daily massage and range of motion too? www.dodgerslist.com/literature/massagepassiveexercises.htm
