Benny is 2 months post op & has deep pain sensation & strong voluntary motor. He's had voluntary motor for approximately 4 weeks. He hasn't developed superficial pain yet. When should we start noticing superficial pain? Is there a time frame? He still hasn't regained bladder or bowel control. Is there still hope he'll get that back? At his 6 week follow up the neurologist was very pleased & thought he'd walk unassisted very well.

Lauren, welcome to Dodgerslist! We are glad you are here. There is still plenty of time for slow healing nerves to continue healing.. some dogs take more like a 6 mos to a year. While no one can give you a time table, we can tell you the usual order in when nerves repair themselves. Nerves heal typically in the reverse order of the damage to the spinal cord: 1. Deep Pain Sensation (Only correctly identified by a specialist.) 2. Tail wagging with joy at seeing you or getting a treat or meal. 3. Bladder and bowel control verified with the "sniff and pee" test. 4. Leg Movement, and then ability to move up into a standing position, and then wobbly walking. 5. Being able to walk with more steadiness and properly place the feet. 6. Ability to walk unassisted and perhaps even run. Let us know if he can wag his tail because his is showing you he is happy. Are you doing any water treadmill therapy? Any Laser light therapy? You can do water therapy at home with these techniques: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/watertherapy.htmUntil Benny can move his legs on his own are you doing daily at home massage and range of motion as shown here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/massagepassiveexercises.htm
