My dog just got off crate rest, partially ruptured disc in his neck. He was going to laser therapy and learning to walk. Unfortuantely, he had a seizure a couple days ago. Today his whole rear gives out when I put him down and the back paws are turned under. The paws placed correctly during the last crate rest. Is this a sign that things are more serious and will absolutely need surgery? Does crate rest help a dog recover from this particular situation?

Stella, what's your dog's name, breed and weight? Does he have epilepsy? You need to have him immediately evaluated to determine what is causing his neuro deterioration. It may be that the seizure that he had the other day has caused the same disc or another disc to rupture or tear. Please keep him strictly crated to protect the spine until he can be evaluated. Please give us more information about the first episode from which he just got off of crate rest. Was a full 8 weeks of crate rest given for that first episode? Was he off of all medication with no signs of pain when he graduated from crate rest? Was movement gradually reintroduced after crate rest? What meds were given during that crate rest? If a full 8 weeks of crate rest was not given for the first episode or if he was allowed movement before all of the swelling resolved, then what your dog is experiencing right now may be due to the fact that the first disc didn't heal correctly. Some dogs only have one disc episode their whole lives while other dogs can have several disc episodes. There are no guarantees with surgery or with conservative care. Yes, we've seen dogs recover use of their legs with conservative care. Here are some pages that you should read to familiarize yourself about surgery. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingsurgery.htmwww.dodgerslist.com/literature/surgery.htmPlease let us know what the vet says after the evaluation. Healing prayers for your dog.

My dog is a beagle. The seizures are very recent and the reason is unknown.
He had surgery a couple of years ago. Recently, he was on crate rest for 8 weeks. However, lost use of the muscles and would maybe take a step or two every so often after. I was struggling to get him to walk but didn't force him. So, movement was next to nothing. The seizure happened over 48 hours prior to the rear giving out. His dr says that wasn't the cause but suggested the idea of possibly being a blood clot. If so, it'll clear up in a few days. He did have acupuncture that same day but wouldn't think that would cause it.
This just appears as a fully ruptured disc versus partially ruptured. It's to my understanding that partially ruptured discs can heal through crate rest. Fully ruptured ones only through surgery. It appears that this is going to happen over and over. I am thinking of getting wheels for him.

Hi Stella, what is your beagle's name? A rupture is a tear. To be a bulging disc, a milder situation, the disc would have tiny little cracks/tears on the exterior of the disc with no disc material escaping. A disc that fully tears can spew out the insides of the disc. Both can have the possibly to heal under conservative treatment. Scroll down to the comparative list so you will have a better idea of the two treatments (conservative or surgery). www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingsurgery.htmThe time to consider IF a wheelchair is needed is after all 8 weeks of crate rest have been completed. Then assessment of neuro functions and the direction of healing will best be known. You can decide best where to spend dollars... if PT such as underwater treadmill or a wheelchair.
