Just back from the vet with my 4 year old dachshund, Dolly she was diagnosed with early IVDD, her symptoms today were mild, she started showing signs of pain when going up and down steps. I was familiar with dogerslist prior to the appt. today, so I mentioned this to my vet, she did not act like she knew of the website Dolly was started on Tramadol, Carprofen, and Methocarbamol, and I was told to do the crate rest. I did ask about starting pepcid , and was told to just give the meds with food. She also received a short acting pain injection today. Crate rest has been started. Am I missing anything?

bb, welcome to Dodgerslist. My name is Paula what is yours? With mild symptom Dolly is a good candidate to recover IF....if you can commit to 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 only out to potty for a full 8 weeks. No laps, no couch, no sleeping in bed with you, no meandering around during potty times. No baths, no chiro (aka VOM). In other words do everything you can to limit the vertebrae in the back from moving and putting pressure on the bad disc. Let us know you are doing STRICT crate rest and which recovery suite you have chosen to use. In the early days of learning our dogs have IVDD, everyone needs a shoulder to lean on while getting things figured out, dealing with emotions, getting up to speed on meds, what disc disease is, etc. Our hope for each owner is that they become independent with the ability take and active roll in working with your vet to discuss confidently various issues from medications to recognizing if suggestions of activity would be harmful to the healing disc. All that takes being a reader. This page will give you the overall picture and understanding you need right away…. as time permits continue to read all of the articles of the Disc Disease 101 core readings to learn how to best set up the recovery suite, etc. www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingpage.htmCan you fill us in on these important details: -- Is there still currently pain - shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant/slow to move head or body, tight hard tummy? -- What are the exact names of meds currently given, their doses in mgs and frequency given ? What was the exact name of the short acting pain injection? -- Eating and drinking OK? -- Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood? PEPCID AC The FDA and manufacturer pkg insert indicate gastrointestinal problems are side effects of using NSAIDs. The natural defenses of the stomach to shield against stomach acid is hindered when taking NSAIDs. Serious gastrointestinal toxicity such as bleeding, ulceration, and perforation, can occur at any time, with or without warning symptoms. Phrase the question to your vet this particular way:" Is there a medical/health reason for my dog not to take Pepcid?" If there is no reason, we follow vets who are proactive in stomach protection by giving doxies 5mg Pepcid (famotidine) 30 minutes before the NSAID. This directory is in alpha order and will make the studying of each meds Dolly takes easy to find: www.marvistavet.com/html/pharmacy_center.htm
