Hi Raven I'm sorry to hear of your dog's difficulties but please let your dog know that everything is going to be OK
I believe I was talking with your sister on our Facebook page. Can you furnish us with more information. This will help us to support you better.
What is your dog's name?
-- How much does your dog weigh?
--What breed is your dog and did you specifically get a diagnosis of IVDD?
-- What was the date you saw the vet and started 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7? NOTE: 100% STRICT rest 24/7 only out for a very few footsteps at potty time means: no laps, no couch, no sleeping in bed with you, no meandering, scooting or dragging around during potty times. No baths, no chiro (aka VOM). In other words do everything you can to limit the vertebrae in the back from moving and putting pressure on the bad disc. There are no meds to heal a disc... just time of 8 weeks and limited movement.
-- Is there still currently pain - shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant/slow to move head or body, tight hard tummy?
-- Please list the exact names of meds currently given, the start date, their doses in mgs and how often you give.
-- Currently can your dog wobbly walk? move the legs at all? or wag the tail when you do some happy talk?
-- Do you find wet bedding or leaks on you when lifted up?
-- Eating and drinking OK?
-- Poops OK - normal color no dark or bright red blood?

Hi Raven, we'll be looking forward to your answers that LInda asked so we know how to help. I see your sister told us on Facebook: - that you are in TN and the dog is dragging his back legs and screaming when they touch him this started yesterday 5/8. Vet said they can't help him. There is no reason a vet who knows this disease can't help. So you will just need to go to another vet asap today EVEN if that means an ER vet to find a knowledgeable vet. There is no way that your dog should be allowed to be in pain when there are so many pain relievers that DO work with a disc episode. The vets at the U of TN vet hospital is one place if drivable for you. For sure you can get help at the U of TN your local vet is not comfortable in giving: 2407 River Drive , Knoxville, TN 865-974-8387 www.vet. utk.edu/cs/ index.php Let us know where you live as other members may be able to help you find a vet, too. Print out to keep with you about the pain relievers you must strongly advocate for. Once the right dose, combo and frequency is given pain will be in control in one hour and stay that way dose to dose. Read and print more about: Tramadol, methocarbamol and gabapentin from here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingpain.htmA good card to print out to help keep all the meds straight when you are talking to a vet about getting things right for your dog. print it out from here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/MedCard.pdf

Hi Raven,
What is your dog's name? What are the exact names of the medications and the dosages and frequencies given? Glad you have begun crate rest! That's one of the best things you can do for your dog. Lack of movement of the back helps the disc to begin healing.

Raven, is the pain fully undercontrol dose to dose of the one pain med he is on? That means you do not see shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant to move much or slow to move, tight tense tummy, head held high or nose to the ground, not normal perky self? Giving a full 50mg tablet every 12 hours is not usually enough pain med to full control pain. If that is the case for Scooter, you need to STRONGLY advocate before the vet closes today. Tramadol has a VERY short half life of 1.7 hours and is not likley to fully control pain unless given every 8 hours. Your vet of course would need to prescribe it that way. Another kind of pain often comes with a disc problems is painful muscle spasms. Methocarbamol is the pain med that is added to tramadol to give full pain coverage. So your vet still has options to ensure Scooter is able to heal pain free. Fuller details on pain and good reading here: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/healingpain.htmHow much does Scooter weigh?Hang in there, by doing 100% STRICT crate rest 24/7 only out at potty times for 8 weeks you are playing a strong roll in helping Scooter heal his disc. Kudos to you, Raven, for seeking a vet with better knowledge of IVDD!!!
