Querida had been asking me to carry her up and down the stairs for about 3 weeks but otherwise, appeared to be fine without any other issues. I thought maybe the cat had been swatting at her, at the top of the stairs. I also wondered if her back or knees was starting to bother her. There has been gates and ramps in the house, since they came to us, as newborns. I came home from work, Thursday with her not getting off her bed. When coached, and helped, she attempted to stand and her back legs were limp. She is 14 years old, very healthy. She is on Pred, twice a day 5 mg, Pepcid taken with Pred, Carafate once a day, Tamadol three times a day.
She can wag her tail, has full bowel and bladder control, can slightly put weight on her legs while in sling and pottying, tries to walk backward in sling, won't move after she has went to bathroom. In cage 24/7, other than getting carried out for sling bathroom trips. Do to her age, being severely burned from a heating pad while undergoing surgery and having to have surgery to save her life, and being hospitalized, and now having extreme anxiety entering a vets, I just cannot put her through another surgery. After me fully bawling my eyes out, which I have done more over my girls (two doxies) than any other living being in my life, I am very hopeful, with her symptoms. I am looking forward to her being fully recovered.

Welcome to Dodgerslist. First thing to know is that it IS in the cards for your dog to get back to enjoying life after recovering. With this disease self education is critical not just so you make sure the right things are being done for the best recovery but for your own emotions. The unknown is simply a scary place. Get ready to fight this disease now and in the future by knowing all things IVDD. There is no better place to start than on our main web page with "Overview: the essentials" and then read all you can as soon as possible. Are you ready? Here's the link www.dodgerslist.com/healingindex.htmWhat was the date that Querida started crate rest for this episode ? We are a friendly group and go by first names what is yours? Be sure to give her the Pepcid AC 30 minutes before the Pred every 12 hours.. Poor little Querida being burned by a heating pad during surgery.. How could they let that happen? I don't blame her for being afraid of going to the Vet. Is there still currently pain - shivering, trembling, yelping when picked up or moved, reluctant to move much or slow to move, tight tense tummy? If there is pain or neuro diminishment, dogs can benefit greatly with acupuncture or laser light therapy. These therapies can be be started right away to help relieve pain and to also to kick start energy production in nerve cells to sprout. So if this therapy is in your budget, seek out a holistic vet. ahvma.org/Widgets/FindVet.html www.serenityvetacupuncture.com/index.php/faq_/ [one vet's overview/prices] Chiropractic is not recommended for IVDD dogs. Nothing is more traumatic that our beloved dogs down with IVDD but time and great care heals.. All of us here have been through or are going through the same thing you are with Querida with our own dogs.. My Tyler who has recovered from two IVDD episodes, sends feel better snuggles to Querida.. Sending comforting thoughts your way..

She started crate rest immediately. Yesterday, only 3 days after starting▼ Pred, she started taper. It obviously was too soon. She work at 3 am, panting heavily, shaking, tight, etc. I moved ▲Pred back up. I thought it was too short of a regime. I will work with vet, to increase treatment. I am so fearful of more episodes, after she heals. I am moving my bed to the floor. As I said, the place has always been covered with rugs, ramps, gates, crates, etc. I am buying those sock for them both. I am not ready to be without them! I want to extend their pain and suffering free life, as long as I can. Thanks for the support! Kim

Kim, this is all so scary, but it is all going to be ok. I promise you I felt exactly the same way about my Mimi (who also had her first taper after 3 days - and like Querida it didn't go well). This can happen with a taper, and what it has told you is that Querida needs to be on the steroid longer to bring the swelling down. Have you contacted your vet and has he moved Querida back to the anti-inflammatory level? Please let us know what your vet says, but don't panic, now is your chance to be the strong advocate that Querida needs. ((HUGS))

Yes, she is back up on Prednisone and as soon as I opened the pen this morning, she bolted out (drunken legs and all) Scared the crud out of me! Scooped her up, explained to her that her legs don't work......... she tried to convince me otherwise. I can tell, this is going to be a huge challenge.
Querida is recovering and getting use back of legs. Never did lose feeling or bowel and bladder control. She is doing better, with the Pred. Can we go back to our hiking and such, after she is fully recovered or will she never be able to do those things again? Does this make her much more prone to injury from now on?

You may wish to turn your recovery suite into a top opening one. That way Querida can be lifted up eliminating any chance to bolt from an open door. Here is Michelle's tip for the easy conversion: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/cratesupplies/cratetopconvert.pdfBetter than you standing in one spot with 6ft leash, harness and sling is setting up a 6 foot diameter fenced area during pottytimes for the same reason — saftey from wanting to run and do damage to the early healing disc. Poke in the ground garden edging fence or an ex-pen in the grass to form a 6 foot diameter will let Dollie know with the visible and physical barrier there is not going to be any sniff fests going on.
Excellent question about after crate, it is something that that is on the mind of everyone. So now that information is included in the core collection of IVDD 101 readings we've been recommending for all owners. Check out the right hand column called "After Crate Rest then what" And also from the core readings "Shortcut through IVDD" just what disc disease is: www.dodgerslist.com/literature/IVDDcourse/what_is_disc_disease.html

We'll, Querida's Eddies Wheels are shipping on the 11th. I am so excited! I am hoping, since she can bear weight and walk some ( very wobbly and unsteady), that she will get strong again. Just seems like when she appears to do better, she goes backwards. That is why I decided to get her wheels. She loves to run, and hoping with wheels, she can do that again.
