My 12 year old
dachsund, Daisy, has deteriorated within the past 12 hours to not being able to hold herself up
at all.
No mobility. She has had reoccurring DDD over the past year, with her very first episode happening when she was 6 years. No further episodes until she was 11.
Because or her age, we decided to reply on management rather then surgery. She takes
Deramaxx and is restricted...no running, jumping, stairs, etc. All of a sudden last night, she quickly progressed to not being able to stand, beginning with
her front legs. She just falls over sideways. Her range of motion has been quite dismissed over the past 8 months, especially the front legs. Following previous instructions from her vet, she has been confined to her bed. Unfortunately, getting her to go to the washroom as been extremely difficult.
No urine or stool since 4:30 yesterday. We are thinking to take her to vet today to have her euthanized as we are sure she is in quite some pain, especially with her bowels and bladder filling up. We are not hopeful that anything more can be done for her. We do not want to put her through surgery. Is there any hope that she will get through this episode this time?
Thank you for replying. Daisy does sometimes
yelp when I lift her up. She is quite stiff like a board. I am very careful and gentle so as not to hurt her. She
does not attempt to move at all, stays laying in her bed. She whimpers when she wants something. Her
tummy is quite firm as well and her eyes have been tearing. No tail wagging,
can move front legs just a little, but not forward. She
can move her back legs a little as well. She did have a good poop this morning after breakfast that is very normal. She
has not peed since yesterday around 4:30 pm and still there
have been no leaks. Her eating is normal...however,
she's has not drank water since 8:30 last evening. That could explain why she has not peed. Her vet diagnosed her with DDD based on her symptoms. No X-rays have been taken. He is quite confident that the damaged disc is in her
neck. He has her on
25mg of Deramaxx once a day, Previously, for previous episodes, he prescribed 50mg per day, but only for 5 days because he was concerned about the side effects. Daisy is
14 lbs....she is quite big mini. The vet is happy with her weight, and not concerned that she is over. It took 4 weeks of bed rest to get her up and walking around after her last episode, but still with limited mobility. She also seems to have arthritis in her hips, so that is part of the mobility problem.
